For a long OBS recording, choose MKV when protecting the file from an unexpected crash or power loss matters most. OBS says an interrupted MKV recording remains playable and recoverable, unlike a regular MP4 or MOV file, which may be unrecoverable if writing stops before finalization. After recording, use OBS to remux the MKV to MP4 if your editor needs it. A recoverable recording is not a second backup, so keep valuable files on separate storage too.
Which OBS recording format is safest if the computer crashes?
OBS recommends MKV when an unforeseen interruption is a concern. Its Audio/Video Formats Guide describes MKV as failsafe: an unfinished recording remains playable and recoverable. That makes MKV the strongest default for a continuous local recording where a clean stop cannot be guaranteed. This is OBS guidance, not a guarantee against every kind of disk failure or data loss.
Regular MP4 and MOV require file finalization to be playable. OBS warns that if writing is interrupted, the file may not be recoverable. They are therefore poor choices for direct recording when crashes, power loss, or forced shutdowns are in scope.
How the recording containers differ
| Format | Interruption and finalization | Codec and workflow notes |
|---|---|---|
| MKV | OBS recommends it for unexpected stops; an unfinished recording remains playable and recoverable. | Supports every encoder combination in OBS. Remux to another container when your editor or delivery workflow requires one. |
| Regular MP4 or MOV | Requires finalization; an interrupted write may leave the file unrecoverable. | Use only when you can accept that interruption risk or have another recording strategy. |
| Fragmented MP4 or MOV | Fragmented writing avoids the same finalization dependency as regular MP4/MOV. | Check the exact OBS version, codec combination, and target editor before choosing it. |
| Hybrid MP4 | Combines fragmented writing with a soft-remux finalization for wider compatibility; OBS describes it as recoverable after an aborted write. | Available in OBS 30.2 and later. Supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video; PCM audio compatibility is limited. |
| Hybrid MOV | Uses the hybrid approach to improve compatibility while retaining recovery characteristics. | Supports H.264, HEVC, and ProRes video. Consider it when the workflow specifically calls for those formats, especially ProRes. |
Container choice does not change the underlying video or audio codec. Check that both the selected container and the recorded codecs are supported by the player or editor that will open the file. The options and combinations depend on your OBS version and settings.

Set up a resilient OBS recording
- Choose a dependable recording path. Open Settings > Output and set the recording path to a drive with enough free space for the expected recording. Confirm the path is on the storage you intend to use and that the drive will remain available during the session.
- Select the recording format. In Settings > Output, choose MKV for the straightforward recovery-first option. If you need an MP4-compatible workflow and use OBS 30.2 or later, check whether Hybrid MP4 supports your codec and editor requirements before selecting it.
- Choose a quality preset with capacity and hardware in mind. Long sessions multiply storage use. Avoid choosing Lossless casually: OBS’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide (2023) estimates around 7 GB per minute for that preset. Indistinguishable can also increase storage needs and affect older or weaker hardware. These trade-offs matter more over a 24/7 session than a short test recording.
- Run a short test and inspect the result. Stop normally, open the file in the intended player or editor, and verify its video and audio. For a recovery-first setup, also make sure you know how to locate the resulting MKV and remux it if needed.
- Document a retention and second-copy routine. Decide how long recordings should remain on the recording drive and when valuable files will be copied to separate storage. OBS’s format guidance addresses recording-file recovery, not a complete backup architecture. A second copy helps protect against loss of the recording drive itself.
How to convert an MKV recording to MP4 afterward
OBS includes a remuxing function, which changes the container without requiring you to record directly to a format that is vulnerable to interrupted finalization. Remux after the recording has stopped and use the MP4 copy only if it fits your editor’s codec requirements.
- In OBS, open File > Remux Recordings.
- Select the MKV recording and start the remux.
- Open the resulting MP4 in the intended editor or player and confirm that video and audio work before moving or deleting the MKV.
You can also enable automatic remuxing after recording stops in OBS’s recording settings. Keep the original MKV until you have checked the remuxed copy; remuxing is a format conversion, not a separate backup.

Preserve settings and scenes separately
After configuring output, export the OBS profile as JSON so you can preserve most output settings. Profiles do not store scenes, so export or back up the scene collection separately. Keeping both gives you a better path to rebuild the recording setup after a configuration loss, but neither file is a copy of the recorded video.
Troubleshooting common recording problems
- The recording will not open after OBS or the computer stopped unexpectedly: If you recorded regular MP4 or MOV, interrupted finalization may have made it unrecoverable. For future sessions, switch to MKV or a compatible hybrid format. OBS describes unfinished MKV as playable and recoverable, but it cannot restore data lost through every type of storage failure.
- The MP4 remux will not play in your editor: Verify that the editor supports the video and audio codecs inside the file, not just the MP4 container. Recheck the codec combination against the chosen container’s OBS support.
- Recording storage fills sooner than expected: Check the selected quality preset and available drive capacity. Lossless can use around 7 GB per minute according to OBS’s 2023 guide; reconsider the preset and retention period before starting another long session.
- The recording is affected on older or weaker hardware: A demanding preset such as Indistinguishable may affect performance on that hardware. Choose a less demanding quality setting and test the complete recording path before relying on it for an extended session.
- Your saved profile does not restore the full OBS layout: Profiles preserve most output settings, not scenes. Restore the scene collection from its separate backup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Your local OBS recording and backup routine remain separate.
