24/7 streaming

OBS vs. FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Radio Stream

OBS suits visual, scene-based production; FFmpeg suits a fixed command-line pipeline. Neither guarantees uptime: YouTube settings, monitoring, recovery planning, archive limits, and music rights all matter.

Choose OBS if you want a visual, scene-based setup you can adjust on screen; choose FFmpeg if you want a fixed, scripted pipeline and are comfortable managing it from the command line. Neither encoder guarantees 24/7 uptime. Stable upload bandwidth, monitoring, recovery planning, and permission to stream every track matter as much as the encoder.

OBS or FFmpeg: which workflow fits?

What matters OBS FFmpeg
Production interface A graphical interface with scenes and visual sources; useful for a composed layout or hands-on changes. A command-line pipeline suited to a fixed feed; requires comfort configuring and managing commands.
Changing the stream Convenient when you expect to adjust scenes, overlays, or visual sources while operating. Can suit a stable, repeatable input-to-output setup; configuration and recovery are operator-managed.
Monitoring and recovery The interface supports direct observation, but unattended operation still needs external checks and a recovery plan. Monitoring and restart behavior need deliberate process or service design. No particular recovery command or guarantee is established here.
YouTube compatibility The OBS project configuration lists YouTube RTMPS and legacy RTMP service settings. Confirm the current service settings in your OBS build. YouTube publishes encoder requirements; validate your FFmpeg build and output against them.
24/7 operation Test the computer, network, media source, and recovery behavior before relying on it unattended. Test looping, input failures, process restarts, network interruptions, and monitoring before relying on it unattended.

These are workflow differences, not comparative uptime or performance results. The platform requirements below apply to either encoder. For the current YouTube ingest requirements, see YouTube’s encoder settings; OBS’s maintained service settings are listed in its YouTube service configuration.

Set up either encoder to meet YouTube’s requirements

For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Select video bitrate for your resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current bitrate table, rather than carrying one bitrate across every format. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers on different devices and connections.

Use a secure ingest connection and protect the key

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. OBS’s listed primary YouTube RTMPS endpoint is rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2; the project configuration also lists a backup endpoint and legacy RTMP entries. Endpoints and service configuration can change, so confirm them in your current OBS build and YouTube Live Control Room before use. With FFmpeg, use the ingest URL and stream key provided for your broadcast and verify that your chosen build supports the intended output.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Your stream key is an encoder credential: treat it like a password. Do not include a real key in a public command, screenshot, or shared configuration. YouTube’s encoder workflow has you supply the stream URL and key in the encoder; consult YouTube’s streaming setup steps for the current account workflow.

RTMP(S) is the ordinary choice; HLS is a special case

YouTube also offers HLS ingest for supported use cases. Its HLS requirements include TS segments, a rolling playlist, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations between one and four seconds. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. An ordinary lofi stream generally does not need HLS unless a codec or workflow requires it; see YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

Make a 24/7 stream operationally resilient

A successful start is not proof that a stream can run unattended. YouTube recommends testing the encoder, checking outbound bandwidth, leaving headroom above the stream bitrate, confirming that the broadcast is visible, checking local archive files, and monitoring audio and video quality. It recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That margin helps accommodate variation; it does not guarantee against outages.

Preflight before committing to a continuous broadcast

  • Confirm eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Measure the actual upload connection: Compare usable upload capacity with the total outgoing stream bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Do not assume a connection’s advertised maximum is what it can sustain continuously.
  • Test the complete media path: Run the intended video and audio through the encoder, verify the stream in YouTube, and listen and watch for dropouts, silence, clipping, or a frozen image.
  • Exercise recovery: Test what happens when the media source fails, the encoder stops, or the network disconnects. Decide who or what will detect the failure and how the stream will be restarted; do not assume either encoder recovers every failure automatically.
  • Check local recording if you need an archive: Record a test, confirm the file plays, and check available disk capacity before leaving recording enabled for a long broadcast.
  • Keep the key private: Store it only in the encoder or a suitably protected configuration. If exposed, replace it through YouTube’s controls.

Plan ongoing checks

During operation, monitor the YouTube stream’s health and the audio and video output, and check that the encoder and media source remain active. For an unattended setup, arrange a way to notice a stopped or degraded stream and a tested procedure for recovery. A restart can restore transmission, but it cannot recreate lost footage or grant missing music rights.

Understand the 12-hour archive and DVR limits

A single continuous 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its live-stream archive guidance recommends keeping a local archive backup if the recording matters. Check disk capacity and verify local files rather than relying on the platform archive alone.

YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers a complete rewind of a continuous broadcast; see YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Clear music rights before you go live

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If copyrighted material remains in a live broadcast, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license by itself may not prevent a match from triggering action: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for copyrighted content and confirm the required allowlisting with the rights owner before broadcasting.

YouTube’s livestream terms say creators represent that they hold the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. This is a platform requirement, not legal advice; read the YouTube livestream terms and obtain rights covering the intended use, territory, and broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not keep a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded material, so no computer or OBS session has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not live camera production. Review the service details and start the free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use FFmpeg for a 24/7 stream without a graphical interface?

Yes, FFmpeg is a command-line encoder workflow. You need to configure and manage the pipeline and its monitoring and recovery yourself; validate the output against YouTube’s current requirements.

Will YouTube save the entire recording of a 24/7 livestream?

Not necessarily. YouTube says a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all; keep and verify a local recording if a full archive matters.

Does a music subscription automatically give me rights to livestream the tracks?

Not on the information established here. Confirm that your license covers live streaming and any relevant rights, and check whether the rights owner must allowlist your channel.
