Use AWS Elemental Live’s REST API to automate event creation and changes, manage dynamic playlists while an event is running, and check stream status. The examples below are documented endpoint patterns—not drop-in scripts: confirm the payload, authentication, and API version in the guide matching your deployed release before using them.
Choose the right Elemental interface
This guide is about AWS Elemental Live, AWS’s software and appliance product for formatting live video for broadcast television and streaming to internet-connected devices. It is not a guide to AWS Elemental MediaLive, which has a separate API reference. The broader Elemental Live suite also includes Elemental Conductor for cluster management and optional Elemental Statmux for multi-program transport streams in a Conductor cluster. AWS Elemental Live
| Interface | Best fit |
|---|---|
| REST API | Automation and the web interface’s features; AWS says it supports all web-interface features plus automation features. |
| Browser web interface | Interactive configuration and operation. |
| SNMP | Basic monitoring and control. |
AWS describes the intended API-guide audience as system integrators and Elemental Live operators. For repeatable integrations and runtime playlist control, REST is the relevant interface. AWS: Interfaces for Elemental Live
Create or modify an event with REST
AWS’s event examples use HTTP POST to create an event and PUT to modify an existing one. The documented body is XML rooted at <live_event>.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Create: send
POST http://<Live IP Address>/live_events. - Modify: send
PUT http://<Live IP Address>/live_events/<live event id>.
The exact XML depends on the settings being configured. AWS’s example sets an event name and configures a motion image inserter, including enable_rest. That is a feature-specific payload illustration, not a complete event schema. Obtain the schema and any required fields from the API guide for your installed release. AWS: Live event examples
Automate a running event’s dynamic playlist
Dynamic playlists let an operator manage inputs during a running event—for example, to switch between live sources or insert file-based content. The following are documented path patterns; they do not specify complete request bodies or authentication. Check the version-matched API guide for those details. AWS: Activate dynamic playlist input

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

| Purpose | Method and path | Lifecycle constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Add inputs to the playlist | POST /live_events/<event ID>/inputs |
Adds inputs to the end of the dynamic playlist for a running event. |
| Replace queued playlist inputs | POST /live_events/<event ID>/playlist |
Replaces non-active playlist inputs with the supplied inputs while retaining the active input. |
| Retrieve the event and inputs | GET /live_events/<event ID> |
Use to inspect the event configuration and its inputs. |
| Modify a playlist input | PUT /live_events/<event ID>/inputs/<input ID> |
The target input must be non-active. |
| Delete a playlist input | DELETE /live_events/<event ID>/inputs/<input ID> |
The target input must be non-active. |
| Prepare an input | POST /live_events/<event ID>/prepare_input |
Can prepare an input and optionally schedule its activation. |
| Activate an input | POST /live_events/<event ID>/activate_input |
Activates immediately or at a specified time. |
| Check event status | GET /live_events/<event ID>status |
Returns event status, including input stage and state. |
Build a runtime switching workflow
AWS’s documented operations and sample workflows support a general sequence for changing content. This is an editorial synthesis of those examples, not a tested procedure; use your release’s guide to construct valid requests and timing behavior.
- Establish the event and its primary input.
- Add or replace the next playlist inputs while the event is running, taking care not to replace or modify the active input where the operation requires a non-active target.
- Prepare the next input when the workflow calls for preparation; specify activation timing if supported and appropriate for the planned transition.
- Activate the intended input immediately or at the specified time.
- Query event status and confirm the expected input stage and state.
Patterns shown in AWS examples
- Interrupt a live input with file-based ad content, then return to the live source.
- Switch from one live source to another.
- Use a looped file input as temporary fallback content during an unexpected event.
- Sequence movie and ad segments before returning to a live feed.
Depending on the workflow, AWS shows returning or switching through the REST “Activate Dynamic Playlist Input” operation. Verify timing and playlist behavior against the installed release. AWS: Dynamic playlist examples

Verify version compatibility before automating
AWS’s current user-document coverage applies to Elemental Live 2.17 and later, and Conductor 3.17 and later. That does not establish that every example or endpoint behaves identically on every deployment. The exact installed version is not specified here, so check the appliance’s release and consult its matching API guide before copying a request. AWS says the Elemental Live API guide is available from the appliance web interface’s Support tab. AWS: Elemental Live documentation AWS: Find the API guide

Elemental Live automation is suited to operators managing an Elemental Live deployment. If the separate requirement is simply to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. StreamNeo
