To stream recorded classes continuously as a YouTube Live broadcast from a cloud server, create a YouTube stream, give a cloud-hosted encoder its ingest URL and stream key, pace the class files at real time, and separately arrange playback, monitoring, and recovery. FFmpeg can handle file pacing, but it does not by itself create a playlist or guarantee that a failed process restarts. This guide covers a self-managed setup and a cloud alternative.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio.
- Recorded class files you have the right to broadcast.
- A cloud server with persistent access to those files, an encoder such as FFmpeg, and a plan for keeping the playback process running.
- A reliable way to store the YouTube stream key without exposing it.
There is no universal cloud-server size or monthly cost for this workload. The right server depends on the video files, whether they can be sent without transcoding, the stream bitrate, storage, region, and the provider’s outbound data charges.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create a new stream, or use Manage → Schedule stream to schedule one.
- Set the title, visibility, and event details. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility; choose deliberately, especially while testing recorded lessons.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube instructs creators to enter these details in the encoder.
- For a scheduled event, create it before starting the encoder. Once the encoder connects, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live.
Do not put the stream key in a public script, screenshot, or repository. Restrict access to the configuration file or secret store used by the streaming process. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the server.
Choose how the cloud will play the classes
Self-managed FFmpeg on a cloud VM
With this route, you manage the server, media files, encoding, playlist logic, process supervision, and monitoring. FFmpeg’s -re input option reads a file at its native frame rate; it is equivalent to -readrate 1 and is useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. It handles real-time pacing, not playlist scheduling or automatic recovery.

Do not assume a single generic FFmpeg command will work for every class archive. Files can differ in codecs, frame rates, audio tracks, aspect ratios, and duration. Some may need transcoding; others may be suitable for stream-copying. Test your actual files and settings on a private or unlisted event before scheduling a public broadcast.
Hosted prerecorded-video streaming service
YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded-video streams. Gyre describes uploading videos, arranging a looping playlist, connecting a YouTube account, and scheduling a stream. Check its current plan price, storage and file limits, supported formats, scheduling options, and terms directly before choosing it. Its promotional claims about growth, retention, or time saved are vendor claims, not independent performance findings.

Connect the cloud encoder securely
- Configure the encoder with the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the exact ingest details YouTube supplies rather than an address copied from an old tutorial.
- Prefer RTMPS where the encoder supports it. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; its documented YouTube setup uses port 443 and requires the correct protocol, ingest endpoint, and application path. The server hostname is also needed for authentication through SNI during the TLS handshake.
- Keep the key in a protected configuration file or secret store with access limited to the streaming process. Avoid printing it in logs or exposing it in shell history.
- Start the encoder and confirm that Live Control Room receives a healthy preview before selecting Go live for a scheduled stream.
If an API-based encoder is involved, Google’s LiveStreams API documentation describes RTMPS ingest fields and stream health status. Using that API for monitoring is optional and requires an implementation.
Make playback continuous and monitor it
Continuous playback is several separate jobs: real-time input pacing, choosing the next class file, keeping the encoder process alive, and noticing when YouTube or the network stops receiving the stream. FFmpeg’s -re supports the pacing job only. A playlist runner or file-concatenation strategy controls what plays next; an operating-system service manager or equivalent supervisor can restart a failed process. These components require their own configuration and testing.

- Test transitions between files, including changes in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and aspect ratio.
- Check that audio remains present and at a consistent level across transitions.
- Test what happens when the network connection drops and when the encoder process exits, then confirm how the process is restarted and how you are alerted.
- Monitor server logs and verify both that the process is running and that YouTube Live Control Room continues to receive the expected stream.
A running process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and any available stream-health information.
Plan YouTube replays separately
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on one much longer continuous broadcast to produce a complete, automatically archived replay. If preserving every class as a replay matters, consider dividing the schedule into shorter events or retaining the original recordings independently, and verify the resulting archive in your channel.

The sources do not establish a universal VM size, cloud-provider price, or guaranteed uptime for a self-managed setup. Estimate costs using your actual bitrate, storage needs, region, transcoding requirements, and provider egress rates.

Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube does not show a preview
- Confirm that the encoder is using the current URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Check that the server can reach the selected ingest endpoint and that RTMPS is configured with the required URL components and port.
- Check encoder logs for authentication, network, or media errors; do not paste a visible stream key into a public support post.
The stream connects but playback is too fast or mistimed
- Check that file input is paced in real time. FFmpeg’s
-rereads input at its native frame rate; it is not a playlist or scheduling feature. - Inspect the output timing and test with the actual class file. Different frame rates and media properties can require different handling.
The stream stops between classes or after a failure
- Check whether the playlist runner has another file queued and whether transitions are supported by the chosen playback method.
- Check process logs and the service supervisor’s status. Configure restart and alert behavior separately; pacing a file with FFmpeg does not supply either.
The live broadcast is available but the replay is incomplete
- Check the event duration and the resulting archive in the channel. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule covers streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee of one complete replay for a longer broadcast.
- For a complete class archive, keep the source files and consider splitting a long schedule into shorter events.
Check content rights and suitability
Only stream class recordings you have permission to broadcast, including any music, images, clips, or other material embedded in them. A private or unlisted test is useful for checking the technical setup, but it does not grant rights to the content or establish that a public broadcast complies with YouTube’s rules.
