Minimizing OBS Studio’s interface should not, by itself, stop its scene from streaming to YouTube. If the picture freezes only when you minimize the browser, game, or other app OBS is capturing, the captured window or source type is the likelier cause. First identify which window you minimized, then check YouTube’s live feed separately from OBS’s local preview.
First identify which window is being minimized
There are two different windows to consider: OBS Studio itself and the app shown in your scene. OBS’s system-tray options hide the OBS interface; they do not change which source the scene captures. A source can be a particular window, a game, or a display, and its behavior when its target app is minimized can vary by operating system, OBS version, and capture method.
- OBS disappears, but the captured picture continues: the interface is simply hidden or minimized.
- The OBS preview freezes after you minimize the captured app: restore that app and check whether the picture returns. This points toward the capture path, not necessarily a stopped stream.
- YouTube playback freezes or disconnects too: check OBS’s stream status and YouTube Live Control Room to see whether the encoder stream actually stopped or degraded.
A frozen preview alone does not prove that YouTube stopped receiving video.
Hide OBS without minimizing the captured app
- Enable the system tray icon. In OBS settings, look for the system tray option. OBS’s overview guide describes enabling the tray icon as required for hiding OBS to the tray. Exact menu locations can vary by installed version.
- Use the tray-minimize option if your build offers it. The English interface strings include “Minimize to system tray when started” and “Always minimize to system tray instead of task bar.” These options hide the OBS window; they do not pause or alter a source.
- Leave the app being captured open. If the scene captures a browser, game, or other target window, minimize OBS rather than that target while you test. If the captured content must be minimized, try a suitable Game Capture or Display Capture source instead of assuming Window Capture will behave identically.
OBS documents window, game, and display capture as distinct source choices, but no one source type is guaranteed to work for every app and operating system. Check the source type in your scene before changing unrelated stream settings.

Test whether YouTube is still receiving the stream
- Start a brief private or unlisted test stream and open the live feed on a second device.
- Observe the YouTube playback and the OBS preview, then minimize only one window at a time: first OBS, then—if needed—the captured app.
- Check OBS’s stream status and YouTube Live Control Room. Note whether only the local preview froze, YouTube playback froze, or the encoder disconnected.
- If the target app’s minimization triggers the problem, restore it and test again. Then try an appropriate Game Capture or Display Capture source, where compatible, and repeat the controlled test.
This separates an OBS display symptom from an interruption visible to viewers. YouTube’s guidance covers encoder-based live streams, and OBS recommends testing stream settings before going live.
Troubleshoot a stream that really stops or degrades
- Only the preview freezes when OBS is minimized: check YouTube from another device before changing settings. If playback continues, the issue is limited to the local view.
- The captured picture freezes when its app is minimized: restore the app and test. Keep it open or try a suitable alternative capture source; results depend on the app, operating system, OBS version, and source type.
- YouTube reports a disconnect: inspect OBS’s stream status and YouTube Live Control Room. Record which window was minimized, the active source type, and what each display showed.
- OBS diagnostics show rendering or encoding trouble: investigate performance separately. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can be demanding and recommends checking system capacity in advance; the fact that a window was minimized does not establish overload as the cause.
- The problem persists: collect an OBS log and include it when asking OBS support for help. Avoid changing several settings at once, so you can tell which change affects the symptom.
Exact menu labels and capture behavior can change between OBS versions. OBS’s overview guide is dated 2021-08-25, while its localization and developer-reference pages can change over time; use the installed build’s settings and a controlled test to verify your setup.
