How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Stream on AWS EC2 in India

You can run a 24/7 YouTube playlist from an always-on Linux EC2 instance in India by using FFmpeg to loop or sequence your media and send the encoded output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The setup is an encoder-to-YouTube connection—not a viewer-delivery service—and needs monitoring and recovery planning. There is no universal EC2 size or fixed monthly cost: both depend on the media, whether it must be transcoded, the region and current AWS pricing.

How the setup works

FFmpeg reads one video or a prepared sequence of files, produces a live-compatible audio/video stream, and sends it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. YouTube provides the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, calling it “a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance and Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.

EC2 keeps the encoder process on a cloud server rather than your home computer. It does not remove the need to test the playlist, secure the stream key, monitor YouTube’s stream health, or plan for instance and network failures.

Before you deploy

  • Enable YouTube live streaming first. Complete the channel’s current live-stream setup and eligibility steps before scheduling the EC2 work. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. The current workflow is described in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
  • Confirm media rights. Ensure you have the rights to distribute and publicly perform every video and audio item in the playlist. Owning a copy or having permission to use a film in another context does not by itself establish streaming rights.
  • Decide whether to transcode. If your source files already match the desired live output, a compatible stream-copy workflow may require much less compute than software transcoding. Test the actual files and output path; do not assume a chosen instance can encode a given resolution and frame rate in real time.
  • Choose an India region and instance only after checking current details. Confirm regional availability, capacity for the intended workload, storage, and current pricing. No specific EC2 size or India monthly price is established here.
  • Plan for broadcasts longer than 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise an archive for longer broadcasts. If a replay matters, verify current behavior and consider a shorter broadcast cycle.

Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
  2. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS endpoint and application path supplied for that stream; do not substitute a guessed hostname or path. YouTube documents the ingest connection on port 443.
  3. Store the stream key in a protected environment file or secret store on the instance, with access restricted to the account that runs the encoder. Do not commit it to a repository, expose it in a public script, or paste it into a support post. YouTube treats the key as the encoder’s password and address; reset it through YouTube if you believe it has been exposed. See Manage live stream settings.

Choose an output profile

Use a profile your files and instance can sustain. The following are YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular EC2 instance can encode them in real time. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. Check the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before going live.

Output profile YouTube-recommended video bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These figures are platform recommendations. Higher resolution or frame rate may need more encoding capacity and outbound bandwidth. Do not select 4K or 60 fps automatically for a documentary playlist: choose a profile that fits the source and viewer experience, then test it with representative motion and audio.

Prepare a loop or playlist

Loop one file

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinitely looping one input. A basic live output pattern is:

Replace the placeholder ingest host, application path, and stream key with the exact values from YouTube. The example uses a 30 fps, 4 Mbps H.264 video profile and a two-second GOP at 30 fps; it is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command or a fit for every source. Check the source frame rate, resolution, audio layout, and encoder performance. If your input already has compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding, investigate stream copy instead of libx264, but validate compatibility with YouTube and the media file before relying on it.

Sequence multiple files

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can sequence compatible files. Create a text file such as playlist.txt with one entry per file:

file '/path/to/film-02.mp4'

Then replace the input and loop options in the command with:

-re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /path/to/playlist.txt

For the concat demuxer to behave cleanly, files should have compatible stream layouts and time bases. Differences in file duration, timestamps, codecs, resolution, frame rate, or audio streams can cause errors, gaps, or visible or audible artifacts. Test the full playlist and every transition. A list of files is not a robust scheduler by itself: inspect the result for continuity and confirm the encoder remains healthy through a complete cycle. See the FFmpeg demuxers documentation.

Launch the EC2 encoder and check the feed

  1. Start a Linux EC2 instance in the India region you selected. Install FFmpeg using the package method appropriate to that operating system, and verify the installed build includes the protocols and codecs your chosen workflow needs.
  2. Make media available to the instance. Put files in storage accessible to the encoder and ensure there is enough capacity for the playlist and logs. Restrict access to media and key files to the service account that needs them.
  3. Confirm outbound RTMPS connectivity. Check that the instance can reach the exact YouTube ingest endpoint over port 443 and that local firewall or network rules do not block the connection.
  4. Run a short end-to-end test. Start the encoder with representative media and confirm that YouTube receives the feed, the selected resolution and frame rate are correct, audio is present, and transitions work. Review stream health in Live Control Room before scheduling a long run.
  5. Run FFmpeg under a supervisor. Use an operating-system service or process supervisor configured to start at boot and restart after a process failure. Capture logs somewhere with enough room and a rotation or retention policy. A restart policy can recover an encoder process crash; it cannot guarantee recovery from every EC2, network, or ingest interruption.
  6. Monitor both sides. Alert if the local process exits, and check YouTube’s stream-health display for ingest problems. A process that is still running does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream.

Costs, scaling, and replay limits

Your EC2 bill depends on the selected region and instance family, how long the instance runs, storage, and data transfer or other services. Check the live AWS pricing for your chosen configuration before deployment; an always-on instance runs continuously, so calculate for the hours you actually expect it to be on. Benchmark the media and encode workload rather than selecting a server from resolution alone.

AWS also documents a managed live-video architecture using MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront for 24×7 channels. Its published example—about $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with about 1,000 viewers, including $67.24 for CloudFront distribution—uses US East (N. Virginia) assumptions and describes a different managed delivery architecture. It is not an EC2 encoder price or a monthly estimate for this India setup. See AWS’s deployment-planning guide and its CloudFront live-streaming overview.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Check that live streaming is enabled, the stream is active in Live Control Room, and the URL, application path, and key match exactly. Check outbound access to the RTMPS endpoint on port 443.
  • The stream disconnects or YouTube reports poor health: Review FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health. Check network stability and whether the selected bitrate is sustainable. Confirm the instance can encode the chosen profile in real time; reduce the output profile or use stream copy only if the source is compatible.
  • The process stops after a crash or reboot: Run it under a service manager or supervisor with a restart policy, and verify that the service starts on boot and can read the media and protected key file.
  • Playback has a gap, artifact, or audio change at a playlist boundary: Check each file’s stream layout, time base, timestamps, codecs, frame rate, and audio properties. Test the complete concat sequence and normalize incompatible files before using it continuously.
  • The stream works but there is no usable replay: Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s guidance; an archive is not promised there for longer broadcasts. Verify current behavior and use shorter broadcast cycles if replay availability is important.
  • The key may have leaked: Reset the stream key in YouTube’s live-stream settings, update the protected secret on the instance, and restart the encoder with the new key.
