First identify what “rejecting” means: FFmpeg may fail to connect or start sending, YouTube may receive the feed but mark it unhealthy, or the stream may arrive with settings YouTube does not accept. Those are different failure paths. Without your redacted command, FFmpeg build, Live Control Room message, and cloud network details, there is no reliable way to name one root cause.
Work through the checks below in order: capture the error, verify the destination and key, match the output to YouTube’s current settings, then investigate encoding and server egress. YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guide covers startup, quality, CPU load, and connectivity; FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes protocol options but cannot diagnose your account or YouTube ingest status.
1. Identify where the rejection happens
Before changing settings, establish whether the failure is before connection, during transmission, or after YouTube receives the feed. A single word such as “rejected” is not enough to distinguish a bad key from an unsupported output or an unhealthy incoming stream.
- Capture the exact failure. Save the complete FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, the FFmpeg version and build configuration, and the relevant complete log excerpt. Record the exact stream-health message shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check whether YouTube receives video. If FFmpeg reports a connection or publish error and no feed appears, investigate the destination, key, protocol, and outbound route. If the feed appears but is marked unhealthy, check the output settings, source media, encoding load, and network stability.
- Keep the environment details with the logs. Note the cloud provider and region, how the process is launched, and any outbound network policy or available packet-loss and connection metrics. These details can distinguish an encoder problem from an egress problem.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder startup and errors, stream appearance and sound, CPU load, and connectivity. Do not assume that a healthy-looking input or local encoder display proves that the cloud server’s feed reaches YouTube reliably.

2. Verify the YouTube destination and stream key
Copy the ingest URL and current stream key from the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Make sure the encoder is configured for the protocol selected for that stream. A key belonging to another stream, an old key, or a URL/key pair configured for a different protocol can prevent publishing.
- Open the intended stream in Live Control Room and copy its current ingest URL and stream key.
- Update the corresponding FFmpeg output configuration. Do not paste the key into a public command, screenshot, or support post.
- If the key may be stale or exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the cloud job with the replacement.
- Start a private or unlisted test and check whether the feed appears in the Live Control Room preview and stream-health panel.
YouTube’s encoder startup guidance specifically advises copying the key from the Stream tab into the encoder and resetting it if needed. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to publish to the associated stream.
3. Match FFmpeg’s output to YouTube’s current encoder settings
Check the settings against YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table, using the row for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending. Do not select a bitrate from a different resolution or frame-rate row, or assume one bitrate fits every codec.

| Setting | What to check |
|---|---|
| Protocol | YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS for its encoder settings and recommends RTMPS. Confirm the Live Control Room stream key and FFmpeg output use the same protocol. |
| Video codec | YouTube’s current table lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Confirm both your FFmpeg build and the selected YouTube workflow support the codec you are sending. |
| Frame rate | YouTube lists up to 60 fps. Check the actual output frame rate rather than relying only on the input file’s label. |
| Keyframe interval | YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Match the output to the selected frame rate and encoder configuration. |
| Rate control and bitrate | YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Use the bitrate range for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate in its table. |
| Audio | YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check that the output contains an accepted audio codec and that the input audio is present and decodable. |
The settings page can change. Use its live table rather than treating any bitrate copied from an old command or another stream as universally correct. YouTube also recommends testing the stream before relying on it and monitoring stream health while it runs.

This is an FFmpeg documentation example for a generic server, not a verified YouTube command. Replace the generic destination with the current ingest URL and key from your YouTube stream, and configure codecs, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes to fit that stream’s current settings. The protocol and muxer required depend on the selected YouTube workflow and installed FFmpeg build. Never publish a real key in an example.
4. Check the source media and the encoder process
If the connection reaches YouTube but the feed is unhealthy, inspect what FFmpeg is actually reading and producing. A file can have missing, silent, damaged, or unexpectedly encoded audio or video; a cloud process can also fall behind if its CPU cannot keep up with the configured output.
- Review FFmpeg’s full output for input-open, decoding, timestamp, audio, video, and output errors.
- Confirm the input file plays correctly and includes the expected picture and sound. Where available, compare the stream with an archived output.
- Check the actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe behavior against the command and YouTube’s settings table.
- Inspect CPU usage and FFmpeg timing while the stream runs. If the process is under heavy load or cannot maintain real-time output, reduce the encoding workload or use a host and encoder configuration that can sustain it.
YouTube advises checking encoder errors and CPU load as well as the stream’s appearance and sound. The log and host metrics should support a diagnosis; a cloud server being online does not by itself show that it is encoding at the required rate.

5. Test the cloud server’s outbound connection
The relevant capacity is the server’s upload path to YouTube, not its download speed. YouTube recommends that total outgoing stream bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth and advises leaving 20% headroom. Its streaming tips note that download speed may exceed upload speed and that connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- Measure or otherwise verify outbound capacity from the cloud host, preferably while the relevant workload is running.
- Compare that capacity with the total outgoing bitrate, leaving the recommended headroom rather than operating at the measured limit.
- Check FFmpeg logs and any provider metrics for dropped connections, packet loss, or unstable egress during the failure.
- Confirm the provider’s current network policy permits the selected destination and protocol. Consult that provider’s documentation for applicable rules; there is no universal provider port list established here.
A speed test from a personal device does not establish the cloud VM’s egress capacity. YouTube’s advice is: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”

RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP and is the ordinary route to test first when the selected stream key is configured for it. HLS is a distinct workflow, not a general fix for an incorrect RTMP key, bitrate, or route.

| Consideration | RTMP/RTMPS | HLS |
|---|---|---|
| When it fits | YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS for its live encoder settings and recommends RTMPS. | YouTube documents HLS for HDR or codecs unsupported through RTMP. |
| Setup | Use the destination and key configured for the selected RTMP-family stream. | Select an HLS protocol stream key in Live Control Room and copy the HTTPS Stream URL. Configure HLS output with the required segment and playlist behavior. |
| Latency | Use the workflow’s intended settings and verify the result in Live Control Room. | YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. |
| Requirements | Match codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, URL, and key to the selected stream. | YouTube specifies TS segments, 1–4 second segment duration, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. |
See YouTube’s HLS ingestion setup guide before switching protocols. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the required output workflow. HLS is not established as universally more reliable.
7. Use reconnect options only for failures they address
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for some protocols and error conditions, including controls for network errors. Their availability and behavior depend on the installed version and build, so check the protocol documentation that applies to your installation.
Reconnect behavior can help with a temporary network interruption that the configured option covers. It cannot make a wrong key valid, make an unsupported codec acceptable, relieve an overloaded encoder, or open a persistently blocked route. After configuring retries, inspect the logs and Live Control Room health rather than treating retries as proof that the stream is healthy.
8. Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or publish | Ingest URL, key, protocol selection, FFmpeg output configuration, or cloud egress | Copy the current destination and key from the intended YouTube stream; inspect the full FFmpeg error and provider network policy. |
| YouTube receives a feed but marks it unhealthy | Codec or bitrate mismatch, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio/video quality, CPU capacity, or unstable outbound bandwidth | Compare actual output with YouTube’s current table; inspect encoder logs, CPU use, upload capacity, and stream-health details. |
| Feed appears, then drops | Network disruption, unstable egress, or a process/host interruption | Correlate FFmpeg timestamps with provider metrics and logs; verify the process remains running and outbound bandwidth has headroom. |
| RTMP workflow is unsuitable for the required HDR or codec | Protocol and codec requirements | Check YouTube’s HLS guidance and configure the matching HLS key, HTTPS URL, segments, and rolling playlist. |
| Retries repeat the same failure | A persistent configuration, account, capacity, or routing issue rather than a recoverable interruption | Fix the underlying key, output, CPU, or network cause; retry flags do not correct those conditions. |
