There is no universal monthly-cost winner. A Raspberry Pi’s running cost depends on its measured electricity use and your marginal tariff; a VPS’s cost depends on its actual bill and whether its outbound-data allowance covers a continuous stream. Compare both for the same video, settings and 30-day period—and include reliability and the work of keeping the stream running.
Calculate the Raspberry Pi’s monthly electricity cost
Measure the complete Pi setup at the wall while it runs the exact FFmpeg stream you plan to use. Multiply its average watts by 0.72 and by your applicable marginal electricity rate per kilowatt-hour to estimate a 30-day period:
30-day cost = average wall watts × 0.72 × tariff per kWh
For example, 10 W at ₹6/kWh works out to ₹43.20 for 30 days. Those are illustrative inputs, not a measured Pi draw or a nationwide Indian tariff. Rates vary with location, utility, consumer category, billing slab and adjustments. Use the rate relevant to your own bill. The worked example and method are also shown by iTechGuides’ India-focused estimate.

Measure the assembled system rather than using the power supply’s capacity as its consumption. Raspberry Pi lists recommended supply capacity of 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5; those figures are not continuous wall-power measurements. Peripherals affect power needs, so measure your actual board, storage, cooling and attached equipment together. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation provides the supply guidance.
What belongs in the Pi estimate?
- Include the Pi, its storage and accessories in the wall measurement.
- Add separately powered equipment, such as network gear or a camera, only if you want those costs included and measure them consistently.
- Include any genuinely incremental connectivity expense. If your home broadband bill would be the same either way, distinguish it from the additional electricity cost.
- If you need to buy hardware, list that as an upfront cost. Only convert it to a monthly amount if you state the amortization period.

Monthly data in TB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.324
This is a conversion for 30 × 24 hours before protocol overhead. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. At those bitrates, the estimates are about 4.54 TB and 5.51 TB, respectively, before overhead. Actual transfer can differ with bitrate behavior and protocol overhead; do not compare a VPS plan against a lower data estimate unless you label the lower bitrate assumption.
Check the provider’s current checkout amount for the billing period you will use, including taxes and required add-ons. Confirm outbound transfer, what happens at the cap, overage charges, throttling or suspension, and renewal pricing. A low monthly rental is not a like-for-like option if its transfer allowance cannot support the stream.

How to read advertised Indian VPS figures
An India-focused secondary guide published on 2026-10-03 reports advertised entry plans in the hundreds of rupees per month and gives examples of ₹519 for one listed provider configuration and ₹880 for a provider-recommended relay configuration. These are dated listings reported by that guide, not verified current checkout prices, provider quotations or evidence that either configuration will sustain your FFmpeg workload. Check the provider’s own current terms before purchasing. The guide is at iTechGuides’ Indian VPS estimate.
Compare the real costs and responsibilities
| Factor | Raspberry Pi at home | Indian VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | Incremental electricity from measured wall draw and your marginal tariff; include only genuinely incremental connectivity costs. | Monthly plan, taxes and add-ons, checked against outbound transfer and the provider’s post-cap policy. |
| Upfront cost | Board, boot storage, suitable supply, case or cooling, and any camera or capture equipment you do not already own. | Usually a recurring rental rather than a board purchase; setup and administration time still have value. |
| Compute suitability | Depends on the exact job. Passing through an encoded file differs from decoding, compositing or transcoding in real time. | A vCPU and RAM listing does not establish that a particular FFmpeg command will sustain the stream. |
| Network and power | Depends on home upload capacity, connection under load, local outages and whether the router and modem stay powered. | Depends on sustained outbound capacity, provider route, transfer allowance and traffic policy; a location or port-speed headline alone does not prove stable delivery. |
| Operations | You provide the hardware, power, home network, restart handling and monitoring. | You still install and maintain FFmpeg and protect the stream key unless you use a managed service. |
| Best fit | You already own a Pi, have reliable home power and broadband, and can validate the exact workload. | You need a remotely hosted encoder and can find a plan with adequate resources and transfer for your stream. |
Make sure the two options are doing the same job
“FFmpeg streaming” can mean forwarding an already encoded file or performing real-time encoding or transcoding. The latter can demand substantially more CPU. Input and output codecs, resolution, frame rate, filters, overlays, audio handling and attached devices all affect the workload. Neither a Pi model nor a VPS size can be assumed to handle every command; test your actual source and command at the settings you intend to compare.

A 2018 study describing a Raspberry Pi 3 webcam-to-YouTube setup notes the CPU cost of transcoding to H.264, but its software, conditions and hardware are historical context—not a current performance benchmark for a Pi 4 or Pi 5. Read the study.
Use YouTube’s settings as the target, not a hardware guarantee
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR bitrate encoding and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS. These are YouTube platform settings, not proof that a particular Pi, VPS or connection can sustain them. Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health. YouTube’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Choose based on your measured totals and tolerance for maintenance
- Decide on the exact video, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Use the same settings for both alternatives.
- If considering a Pi, run the intended FFmpeg workload and measure average wall watts. Apply your marginal tariff using the 30-day formula above.
- If considering a VPS, obtain the current checkout total and verify that outbound data allowance and post-cap behavior cover the calculated monthly transfer.
- Include any hardware purchase, required add-ons and genuinely incremental connectivity costs. Keep upfront costs separate unless you explicitly choose an amortization period.
- Test sustained performance and delivery. Consider who will handle monitoring, stream-key security, outages and restarts.
The Pi is most compelling when you already own it and can rely on your home power and connection. A VPS suits a remotely hosted setup if its resources and transfer terms are adequate. Electricity arithmetic alone cannot decide between them, and a cheap VPS headline cannot substitute for checking data limits and workload performance.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a managed alternative to running FFmpeg on your Pi or VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer at home; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. For this uploaded-video use case, start with the free day on StreamNeo.
