To prevent overheating during 24/7 FFmpeg streaming, measure temperature and throttling while the complete stream is running, then improve airflow or reduce the processing load if the Pi throttles. Raspberry Pi progressively throttles Arm cores between 80°C and 85°C; at 85°C, the Arm cores and GPU are throttled. Those are thermal-control thresholds, not recommended operating targets. The right cooling setup depends on your Pi model, FFmpeg pipeline, case, and room temperature.
Check your Pi model and the actual workload
Start by identifying the Raspberry Pi model. Encoding capability and processing demand differ by generation: Raspberry Pi documents a Pi 4 H.264 hardware-encoding path, while Pi 5 uses software video encoders in the documented configurations. The same resolution and frame rate can therefore impose different loads on different Pi models and software stacks. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation and its H.264 encoding performance paper describe these distinctions.
Temperature at idle is not a useful pass/fail test for an always-on stream. Run the full FFmpeg command—including its actual input codec, output resolution, frame rate, filters, and encoder settings—long enough for temperatures and performance to settle. Video processing is a sustained, compute-intensive workload; Raspberry Pi advises considering extra cooling if throttling occurs during the workload you normally run. See its cooling paper, updated 2026-02-16.
Measure temperature and look for throttling

vcgencmd measure_tempreports a temperature reading in the terminal.cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/tempreports millidegrees Celsius; divide the value by 1,000 to convert it to °C. For example, a reading of72000means 72°C.
Take readings while the normal stream is under load, not just before starting FFmpeg. Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation describes temperature-reading commands and related configuration.
Interpret the thresholds correctly
Raspberry Pi says Arm cores are progressively throttled between 80°C and 85°C. At 85°C, the Arm cores and GPU are throttled. Throttling is the board’s thermal-control response; it can reduce sustained performance, so an encoder may struggle to keep up even if the stream initially starts normally. These thresholds are from Raspberry Pi’s current hardware documentation, accessed in 2026: Raspberry Pi hardware documentation.

A high reading alone does not tell you whether your stream is thermally unstable. Look for temperature staying near the throttling range alongside reduced performance or missed processing deadlines. If the Pi remains below the throttling range and FFmpeg keeps pace, a fan is not automatically necessary.
Improve cooling in order of simplicity
1. Restore unobstructed airflow
Place the Pi where air can circulate around it. Make sure vents are not blocked and that the board is not pressed against a warm surface or enclosed in a case with poor airflow. A case can make cooling more important by restricting air movement, so assess the board in its actual 24/7 location.

2. Fit a compatible heatsink
A heatsink helps conduct heat away from the relevant board component; it must be compatible with the Pi model and properly coupled to that component. Raspberry Pi notes that a heatsink can help control core temperature and that airflow over it improves cooling efficiency. Do not assume a heatsink will solve excessive CPU load or poor airflow by itself.
3. Add active airflow if throttling persists
If the Pi still throttles during the normal stream, consider a compatible small fan or a case designed for airflow. Check board and case compatibility before buying: cooler fit and mounting differ across generations and enclosures. Raspberry Pi specifically identifies its Active Cooler and temperature-controlled fan options as Pi 5-specific considerations; they are not universal accessories for every model. Its hardware documentation says, “A heatsink or small fan can reduce thermal throttling and improve performance.” That guidance does not promise a particular temperature drop for every setup.

Choose cooling for the real trade-offs
- Compatibility: match the cooler to the Pi generation and case.
- Cooling approach: passive heatsinks have no fan noise or moving parts; active cooling adds airflow but brings fan noise and a component that may need maintenance.
- Measured result: check whether throttling disappears under the same streaming workload after the change.
Raspberry Pi’s sources do not establish one universal temperature reduction for a 24/7 FFmpeg stream. The result depends on board, codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, bitrate, enclosure, airflow, and ambient temperature.

Cooling removes heat; it does not make an unsustainable encoding workload lighter. If temperatures remain high or FFmpeg cannot keep pace, review the pipeline as well as the enclosure:

- Check the input and output codecs and the software encoder settings or preset.
- Use a hardware encoding path only if that Pi generation and software stack support it.
Raspberry Pi documents Pi 4’s h264_v4l2m2m hardware encoder and Pi 5 software libx264 configurations in its H.264 encoding performance paper, updated 2026-05-06. Its camera documentation states that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders” and that “libav uses hardware H.264 video encoding when present.” Encoder options affect CPU use, latency, and quality, so verify what your installed FFmpeg build and selected pipeline actually use rather than assuming a setting works across models.
Raspberry Pi’s processor documentation estimates approximately 30–40% CPU for H.264 1080p30 encoding from the ISP on Pi 5. That estimate applies to that specific encoding context; it is not a temperature result or a guarantee for an arbitrary FFmpeg pipeline. See the Raspberry Pi processor documentation.
Troubleshoot common overheating symptoms
- It runs normally at first, then the stream falls behind: compare temperature and FFmpeg performance during a sustained run. If throttling appears under the full workload, improve airflow or cooling and reassess encoder demand.
- The temperature is high only inside the case: check whether vents are blocked or airflow is restricted. Try a more ventilated compatible case or add compatible active cooling if throttling persists.
- A heatsink made little difference: verify that it fits the model and is properly coupled to the relevant component. A heatsink without airflow may not be sufficient for a sustained workload.
- The Pi stays cool but FFmpeg still cannot keep pace: investigate resolution, frame rate, filters, codec, and encoder settings. Thermal throttling is not the only cause of processing limits.
- Temperature readings are taken only at startup or idle: repeat them while the full stream runs long enough to reach stable behavior; brief or idle readings do not establish 24/7 stability.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to running FFmpeg continuously on a Raspberry Pi. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud service loops the video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not live camera footage.
There is one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Billing options are a day, a week, a month, 6 months, or a year; cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo for details.
- Upload a recording or create a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key.
- Go live from the cloud.
That means nothing has to stay on at home, any quality up to 4K 60fps costs one flat price per slot, and automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your StreamNeo free day.
