PETA’s post about Umamusume: Pretty Derby and Silence Suzuka appeared on December 11, 2025, according to contemporaneous reporting—not when a later article with a matching headline was published on May 20, 2026. The post paired a graphic image of the character in pain with a message about racehorse injury and death. Coverage reported that some fans objected to the image, its use of franchise imagery, and its treatment of the real horse’s story. Those reports do not establish a consensus among fans or a ruling by Cygames.
What PETA posted—and when
GosuGamers reported that PETA posted the image on Thursday, December 11, 2025. It described the image as a graphic depiction of Silence Suzuka suffering a leg injury. The report reproduced the post’s caption: “If Umamusume: Pretty Derby were honest, your favourite horse girl doesn’t get a comeback arc. One failed event, and the race is over forever—just like what happened to the real Silence Suzuka.” The report said the post aimed to raise awareness about racehorse suffering. GosuGamers’ contemporaneous coverage is the source for the date and quoted text.
PinoyGamer’s December 25 coverage also dates the post to December 11 and reports objections to the violent depiction and what fans saw as sensationalizing the tragedy. A later Position is Everything article matching the headline here was published May 20, 2026. That later publication date is not the date the controversy began.
Why Silence Suzuka made the image especially sensitive
Silence Suzuka is a character based on a real racehorse of the same name. Contemporaneous coverage links the controversy to the horse’s fatal injury during the 1998 Autumn Tenno Sho and subsequent euthanasia. For fans, the post’s reference was therefore not only to a fictional character’s story: it invoked the fate of the real horse as well.

Cygames’ official derivative-work guidelines note that many characters are based on real racehorses and that the project was created with the cooperation of people including horse owners. The guidelines ask creators to avoid expressions that may offend horse fans, owners, or related parties, or harm the image of a horse or character.
What Cygames’ guidelines say—and what they do not establish
Cygames asks people not to publish or use derivative works that fall into categories including content intended to harm the reputation of the franchise or a third party; violent, grotesque, or sexual depictions; support for or denigration of a particular political, religious, or belief position; antisocial expression; infringement of another party’s rights; commercial use beyond the scope of doujin activity; and other content the company considers inappropriate under the guidelines. Cygames says the guidelines were established in consultation with companies that manage the horses’ names and that it makes the final determination about whether a work falls under the provisions.

These rules explain why some fans cited the guidelines, but they do not amount to a case-specific decision about PETA’s post. The sources reviewed establish no Cygames finding that the image violated its guidelines or any law. The guideline text alone cannot establish whether the post had permission, infringed rights, or fell into a listed category.

GosuGamers and PinoyGamer reported criticism of the image’s graphic nature and its framing of Silence Suzuka’s story. Coverage also described objections to using the franchise character for the message and fan accusations that the post conflicted with Cygames’ guidelines. These are reported reactions, not a measured account of the entire fandom: no reliable total or percentage of fan opinion is established by those reports.

GosuGamers said Cygames had not publicly commented at the time of its report. That is a time-bounded account, not confirmation of the company’s position today. The artist’s identity and whether PETA obtained permission or a license are also not established by the sources reviewed. Calling the art “unofficial” does not by itself settle who made it or whether permission was granted.
