A black gap between videos in an FFmpeg playlist does not, by itself, identify the cause. Start by checking each file’s duration and stream properties, then inspect the concat playlist and FFmpeg output around the transition. The concat demuxer places each file after the previous one using duration information; inaccurate durations or streams with different lengths can create gaps. If those checks do not explain the gap, use YouTube’s stream-health information to see whether the problem is already present at ingest.
Why a gap can appear at a file boundary
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer adjusts timestamps globally: it places the first file at time zero and starts each following file where the preceding one finishes, based on file durations. The FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation warns that this can create gaps when streams do not have exactly the same length. It also notes that duration information may be inaccurate—for example, when estimated from bitrate or when a file is truncated—and that this can cause artifacts.
A black picture could be in the source video, arise from timestamp handling at the join, or appear later in encoding, YouTube ingest, or playback. The symptom alone cannot distinguish those possibilities. Check the files and the outgoing stream before changing the command.
1. Probe every playlist file
Run ffprobe on each entry in the same order as the concat list. For example:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json "clip01.mp4"Repeat for the other files. Compare the results, paying particular attention to:
- Stream count and types: video, audio, subtitles, or other streams.
- Video and audio codecs, and each stream’s time base.
- Reported file duration and whether it matches observed playback.
- Video dimensions and frame rate.
- Audio sample rate, channel layout, and other audio properties.
The concat demuxer’s documented compatibility requirements include matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in dimensions, frame rate, or audio properties can also signal that the files need a common output format rather than direct packet copying. A reported duration is a clue, not proof that a file plays continuously for that exact time.

2. Verify playlist order and duration assumptions
Check that the concat file names the intended files in the intended order and that the paths resolve to the files you probed. Then compare each listed file’s reported duration with its actual playback, especially the file immediately before the gap. A truncated clip or a duration estimate that does not match the media can misplace timestamps for later files.
If you have demonstrated that a particular file’s stored duration is wrong, the concat demuxer supports a per-file duration directive to override it. Use a value justified by the media, not an arbitrary adjustment intended to hide the symptom. See the concat demuxer documentation for the directive’s syntax and behavior.

3. Choose stream copy or re-encoding from the probe results
When stream copy may fit
Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding by copying encoded packets. It can be appropriate when the inputs meet the concat requirements and their timing is sound. It does not normalize incompatible streams or repair incorrect duration metadata. The FFmpeg documentation defines stream copy as packet copying without decoding, filtering, or encoding.
Do not assume that adding -c copy makes files with different stream layouts, codecs, or time bases compatible. The FFmpeg FAQ describes the concat demuxer as useful for avoiding re-encoding when the media format does not support file-level concatenation; that is not a guarantee that arbitrary inputs can be joined cleanly.

When to consider decoding and re-encoding
If the files differ in ways that prevent a clean join, or if continuity requires putting them into a common format, use a decode/filter/re-encode workflow with deliberate video and audio handling. The right filters and output settings depend on the files’ actual properties; without their probe results, there is no safe universal command to prescribe. Preserve the original files and test the transition before replacing a working playlist.

Keep the exact command and its logs. Review the output around the affected boundary for timestamp discontinuities, duration warnings, dropped or duplicated frames, and differences in audio and video streams. If practical, examine the source clips and the encoded output at the same point. That helps separate a gap already present in a source from one introduced while concatenating or encoding.

Do not treat the black interval as proof that the concat demuxer is at fault. If the files and output look continuous but viewers still see a gap, check the YouTube ingest status and playback path as separate parts of the diagnosis.
5. Check YouTube Live health and encoder settings
YouTube provides stream-health status as a diagnostic layer; the LiveStreams resource documents that status. Check it around the time of the transition to help determine whether YouTube is receiving a problem. This does not, on its own, identify which local file or FFmpeg setting caused it.
YouTube Help’s general live encoder settings recommend a two-second keyframe interval and say not to exceed four seconds. The same guidance covers CBR and supported codecs; suitable settings depend on resolution, frame rate, and protocol. These are encoder recommendations, not an explanation or prevalence statistic for black gaps between playlist videos.
