A green screen lets chroma-key software remove the backdrop from your camera image so a scene behind the camera source shows through. For a clean result, make the screen fill the shot, light it evenly, keep yourself as far from it as practical, and adjust the key while checking your hairline, clothes, and moving edges. A green screen is optional: you can stream without one.
How do I set up a green screen for streaming?
- Frame the camera and choose a backdrop. Use cloth, a hanging background, or a pop-up panel. Make sure the green area covers the entire visible background, including when you move, and smooth wrinkles or close gaps that reveal another color. A simple cloth can work; an expensive kit is not essential.
- Light the backdrop evenly. Shadows and inconsistent color make it harder for software to remove the screen cleanly. Where possible, illuminate the screen separately from yourself, and aim for a similar green tone across the whole usable area. Front lighting alone may not be enough. The right number and placement of lights depend on your room and screen, so there is no universal fixture or wattage requirement.
- Move away from the screen. Put your chair and yourself as far from the backdrop as your room allows. Distance helps reduce green light reflecting onto your skin, hair, clothes, and chair, and gives you more flexibility to light yourself independently.
- Keep the camera image usable. Avoid green clothing in the keyed area and watch for reflective objects that may complicate the result. A grainy image can also make clean edges harder to achieve; Streamlabs Talk Studio specifically warns that high ISO increases grain and complicates keying. Its recommendation of at least 720p applies to its own green-screen setup, not to OBS as a universal minimum.
How do I use a green screen in OBS?
- Add your webcam. In your OBS scene, add the camera as a video source.
- Add a replacement background. Add the image, video, or other scene element you want behind yourself. In the scene’s source stack, place it behind the webcam source so the keyed areas reveal it.
- Apply the filter to the camera source. Open the webcam source’s Filters and add Chroma Key. OBS describes the filter as one that “Removes any instances of a given color from the Source.” The filter can target green or a custom color.
- Adjust the filter while watching the output. Use the full scene preview, not just a close crop of the background. Check fine details such as hair, clothing, chair edges, and movement as you make changes.
In Streamlabs Desktop, the official setup guide likewise directs users to open the camera source’s Filters and choose Chroma Key. Software labels and their placement can change between releases.
What are the best OBS chroma key settings?
There is no single best numeric setting: the camera, exposure, lighting, screen color, subject, and clothing all affect the result. First improve the physical screen and its lighting; then adjust the filter only as much as needed.
- Key Color Type: Choose green for a green backdrop, or select a custom color when the screen requires it.
- Similarity: Raise this only until the background disappears. A higher value removes a broader range of pixels and can erase parts of you as well.
- Smoothness: Adjust to soften hard or jagged edges, but check that fine details such as hair are not lost.
- Key Color Spill Reduction: Use this to reduce green traces around your outline. Increase it carefully and watch the subject’s edges.
- Opacity, contrast, brightness, and gamma: Make small adjustments if needed. These controls do not replace fixing uneven screen lighting or exposure.
Streamlabs notes that settings depend on the lighting, hair, skin, and background in each setup. Tune against your actual scene rather than copying someone else’s numbers.

Why does my green screen look patchy?
Before making the key more aggressive, look for problems with the physical backdrop and lighting. Wrinkles, shadows, uncovered areas, and uneven illumination can leave parts of the screen a different shade of green. Smooth the material, make it cover the full frame, and even out the light falling on it. If the camera image is noisy, check exposure and avoid unnecessarily high ISO where possible.
Why is there a green outline around me?
Green spill often comes from being too close to the screen or from light reflecting off it onto your outline. Move farther away if you can, then increase Key Color Spill Reduction gradually. If the fringe remains, check whether the screen is excessively bright relative to you and whether the camera image is noisy. Do not push spill reduction so far that it damages natural colors or fine edges.

What if my hair or clothing disappears, or the edges look jagged?
- Hair or clothing vanishes: Lower Similarity and inspect for green or greenish clothing and reflective surfaces in the keyed area. A more aggressive key may be removing subject pixels.
- Edges look jagged: Adjust Smoothness in small increments. Keep checking hair and other fine details so edge cleanup does not blur them away.
- Green remains in the background: Fix shadows, wrinkles, gaps, or uneven lighting before increasing Similarity.
- Processing is slow or unstable: Green-screen processing can use substantial GPU resources in Streamlabs Talk Studio. This is not a stated minimum GPU specification for OBS; check the performance of your chosen software and system.
Choosing a backdrop: cloth, pop-up panel, or blue screen
| Option | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Fixed cloth or backdrop | Flexible to mount and can be a straightforward choice. Plan for wrinkle management, coverage, and a support or mounting method if needed. |
| Pop-up or collapsible panel | Can be quicker to set up and store. Check its dimensions against the full camera frame and how much space it takes to put away. |
| Blue screen | May be a better fit when green objects appear in the scene or when the intended background and lighting make blue more suitable. Choose the key color based on what is in frame, not by habit. |
Compare coverage, wrinkle control, setup time, portability, storage, and mounting hardware for your room. Lighting is a supporting purchase only if your current setup cannot illuminate the screen evenly. Elgato’s official Green Screen page labels that named model discontinued and says it has no direct replacement, so the page should not be read as confirmation of current availability.

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock with uploaded video, StreamNeo is a separate option from a webcam-based green-screen setup: it loops uploaded recordings or a playlist, rather than broadcasting a live camera. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
