Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To stream a prerecorded 4K video continuously as a YouTube Live broadcast, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option before the input, pace the file with -re, encode to YouTube’s ingest settings, and send the output to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is a starting point for a 4K, 30 fps SDR H.264 file; adjust it for your source and installed FFmpeg build.
Before you start
- Install an FFmpeg build with the encoder you intend to use. The example below requires
libx264. - Have a 4K video file and a stable connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected bitrate. Check your connection under realistic conditions and leave headroom; a single speed-test result does not guarantee a stable stream.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open a live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.
FFmpeg supplies the looping and encoding controls; YouTube’s current encoder settings determine its recommended ingest configuration.
Choose the bitrate and frame rate
YouTube’s current recommendations for 2160p (4K) ingest vary by codec and frame rate. These are encoder input targets, not a promise that every viewer will receive 4K playback; YouTube processes the incoming stream into viewer outputs.
| Output codec | 4K at 30 fps | 4K at 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 42 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 30 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
Figures are YouTube recommendations on its encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. Use a codec supported by your FFmpeg build and appropriate for the source and intended output. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR; consult the current encoder settings page for the applicable details.

YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds; at 60 fps, use approximately 120 frames. Four-kilopixel streams do not have YouTube’s low-latency option and use normal latency.
Get the YouTube ingest address and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or open the scheduled stream you want to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder setup. Keep the key private. If it is compromised, reset it in the stream settings.
- Use the RTMPS destination provided for the stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Do not paste a real key into a public script, article, screenshot, or shared log.
For the platform’s current creation and settings steps, see YouTube’s guides to creating a live stream with an encoder and managing live stream settings.

Run a 4K 30 fps H.264 loop
For a 4K 30 fps SDR source, stereo AAC audio, and an FFmpeg build with libx264, this is an illustrative starting command:
ffmpeg
-stream_loop -1 -re -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 42M -maxrate 42M -bufsize 84M
-g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"
Replace input.mp4 with your file path and replace the destination with the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room. The shown destination is a format example, not a usable server address or key. Keep real credentials out of shell history and scripts that others can read.

-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. Put it before the input it applies to.-rereads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. It belongs before-ifor file streaming.-b:vsets the target video bitrate;-maxrateand-bufsizeconstrain and buffer the rate for a CBR-style configuration.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to a two-second interval only at 30 fps.-f flvselects the streaming container used by the RTMP-family output pattern.
This command does not force a frame rate, resize the picture, set pixel format, or configure color metadata. It assumes the source is already 4K at 30 fps SDR and that its audio and video are suitable. Inspect your file and add conversion settings only if required. FFmpeg’s command documentation explains input and output options; its full documentation includes additional streaming details.
Adapt the command for your source
For 4K at 60 fps
Use the recommendation for the chosen codec and frame rate: 50 Mbps for H.264, or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1, according to YouTube’s encoder settings page accessed in 2026. Set the GOP to approximately two seconds—for example, 120 frames at 60 fps—instead of leaving -g 60. Verify that the FFmpeg build supports the desired encoder and that your hardware can sustain the encode and upload.

If the source is already compatible
FFmpeg can copy compatible streams without re-encoding by using -c copy. This may reduce CPU use, but it does not let you change the encoded bitrate or keyframe spacing. Whether stream copying is suitable depends on the source codecs and YouTube’s ingest requirements; check the output in Live Control Room rather than assuming compatibility.
For a different frame rate, resolution, or color format
The example does not convert these properties. If the source differs from your intended output, choose explicit output settings that match the source, encoder, and YouTube ingest requirements. Avoid forcing an unsuitable frame rate or color configuration merely to make a command resemble the example. Confirm the resulting preview and stream health before relying on it.

Start and monitor the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for connection or encoding errors.
- Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the encoder preview and stream-health information to appear.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live after the preview is ready. Connecting the encoder does not necessarily start the public broadcast by itself.
- Monitor stream health while it runs. Test beforehand with representative motion and audio; YouTube specifically advises testing with content similar to what will be streamed.
Because the video is prerecorded, check the loop boundary as well as the middle of the file: abrupt audio cuts, black frames, or a mismatched ending and opening can repeat for the entire broadcast.
Copyright, reused content, and channel rules
A live encoder does not change the rights status of the video. Use footage, music, narration, and other material you have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content. A continuous prerecorded loop may also be assessed under YouTube’s reused-content and channel monetization rules; streaming it as “live” does not guarantee eligibility for monetization. Check the current policies that apply to your content rather than treating technical acceptance by the ingest server as rights clearance.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot find the input | The path or filename is wrong, or the shell interprets special characters. | Confirm the file path and quote it, as in "input.mp4". |
| Connection fails or YouTube shows no encoder preview | The destination URL or key may be wrong, the key may have changed, or the connection may be blocked or unstable. | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, verify network access, and keep the key private. |
| Video is choppy or stream health degrades | The computer may not encode fast enough, or the upload may not sustain the selected rate. | Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Test the connection and encoding load; lower the output target or choose a sustainable frame rate/codec if needed. |
| Picture or audio format is rejected or plays incorrectly | The source’s codecs, frame rate, pixel format, or audio may not suit the output configuration. | Inspect the source, confirm encoder support in your FFmpeg build, and add only the conversion settings required to meet YouTube’s current ingest requirements. |
| Broadcast connects but does not become public | A scheduled stream may still be waiting for a manual start. | Wait for the encoder preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room. |
| The picture is not low latency | 4K/2160p streams do not offer YouTube’s low-latency optimization. | Plan for normal latency at 4K; do not treat delay alone as an encoder fault. |
