Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst decide what you mean by “pre-recorded YouTube Live.” If you want viewers to watch a finished documentary together at a scheduled time, upload it as a YouTube Premiere. For a standard SDR Premiere, export an MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, BT.709 color, and the source frame rate. Use YouTube’s upload bitrate recommendation for your resolution and frame rate—not its separate live-stream bitrate. A Premiere output above 1080p is not supported under YouTube’s current instructions.
If you want the finished video transmitted as an actual live broadcast, play it through a live encoder and send the encoded feed to YouTube. That route uses YouTube’s live-ingestion settings instead. The distinction matters: an exported file and a live feed are different delivery stages with different bitrate targets.
Premiere or encoder-based live stream: choose the right workflow
| Decision | YouTube Premiere | Encoder-based live stream |
|---|---|---|
| What YouTube receives | A finished video file uploaded in advance | A live encoded feed |
| Which bitrate guidance applies | YouTube upload recommendations | YouTube live-ingestion recommendations |
| 1080p H.264 example | 8 Mbps at 24/25/30 fps; 12 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps | 14 Mbps at 30 fps; 17 Mbps at 60 fps |
| Scheduled viewing | Yes; schedule the uploaded video as a Premiere | Possible, but the encoder must transmit the broadcast |
| Resolution note | YouTube’s current Premiere instructions say output above 1080p is unsupported | YouTube’s live guide includes higher resolutions, subject to its settings |
YouTube describes a Premiere as a finished upload that viewers watch together at a scheduled time. It is not an encoder-ingested live broadcast. See YouTube’s Premiere instructions and its live-streaming overview.
Recommended DaVinci Resolve export targets for a YouTube Premiere
For a standard SDR documentary upload or Premiere, use the following as a baseline. These are YouTube’s published upload recommendations, not mandatory minimums. Resolve’s exact control names and available options can vary by version and operating system; set the target values your installed version exposes rather than assuming one universal preset.

If you are exporting HDR, use YouTube’s HDR row for the selected resolution and frame rate; do not apply the SDR figures above to an HDR render. The upload guidance specifies BT.709 for SDR and lists separate HDR targets.
Why matching the source frame rate matters
Do not change a documentary’s frame rate simply to reach a round number. A conversion can introduce duplicated or blended frames, or alter motion cadence. Keep the project and output aligned with the recorded material unless the production has a specific reason to convert.

How to export and schedule a Premiere
- Confirm the delivery type. Use a Premiere if the audience should watch the uploaded finished video together at a scheduled time. Do not configure a live encoder for this workflow.
- Set the Resolve project and export targets. Match the source frame rate and intended aspect ratio, choose MP4/H.264, progressive scan, BT.709 for SDR, and the upload bitrate row for the output resolution and frame rate. Keep a Premiere at or below 1080p.
- Render and review the file. Check the beginning, end, picture, and audio before uploading. Confirm the exported file has the intended frame rate, resolution, and SDR/HDR treatment.
- Upload in YouTube Studio. Allow YouTube to process the video, then use the Premiere option to schedule it or make it an instant Premiere. YouTube’s instructions cover both scheduled and instant Premières.
Settings for sending the recording as a live broadcast
If you want the pre-recorded program to arrive as a live stream, a separate live playout or encoder must read the video and send a live feed to YouTube. Use YouTube’s live-ingestion targets for that feed; do not substitute upload-file recommendations.
Published YouTube live H.264 targets
| Live output | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps |
YouTube’s live guide recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and RTMPS. Its listed workflow supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; audio guidance lists AAC or MP3, and Rec. 709 is recommended for SDR. Check the guide for the selected resolution and encoder workflow: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

These are feed settings, not a required Resolve export bitrate. A live encoder may decode and re-encode the rendered file, so the right intermediate file settings depend on the chosen playout chain. There is no single verified Resolve-specific export preset for every such chain.
Test the live path before the event
- In YouTube Studio, set up the live stream and note the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Configure the live encoder or playout system to match those output values and YouTube’s bitrate, CBR, keyframe, and protocol guidance.
- Run a test using footage with motion and representative audio; check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that sound and picture arrive correctly.
- For a scheduled encoder broadcast, keep the encoder and its connection operating for the event. This is operationally different from scheduling an uploaded Premiere.
Copyright, reused material, and documentary footage
Export settings do not grant rights to the footage, music, archival clips, photographs, or narration in a documentary. Before publishing, confirm you have the necessary permissions or other legal basis for each element, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for the channel and content. A Premiere and an encoder-based live broadcast do not make unlicensed material permissible. Keep records of licenses and clearances, especially for third-party music and archive material.

Common problems and what to check
- The Premiere option is unavailable or the video cannot be scheduled as expected: confirm you are uploading a video rather than trying to send an encoder feed, and check YouTube Studio’s current Premiere workflow and processing status.
- The Premiere output is rejected or capped: keep it at or below 1080p, as YouTube’s current Premiere instructions do not support output above that resolution.
- The result looks soft or has unexpected motion: verify that the export resolution and frame rate match the project and source. Avoid forced frame-rate changes without a production reason.
- Live stream health is poor: verify the encoder’s selected resolution and frame rate, use the live bitrate row rather than upload figures, configure CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, and check the network and YouTube stream-health status.
- Live feed has no audio or audio is out of sync: check the encoder’s audio source and supported audio format, then test a representative section before going live.
- SDR colors look wrong: ensure the project and export use the intended SDR color space, with BT.709 as YouTube’s stated SDR standard.
