To combine videos in a directory into one YouTube-ready file, put their filenames in the intended order in a text playlist, then pass that playlist to FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. Use -c copy only when the files’ streams are compatible; otherwise, normalize the clips or concatenate them with a filter and re-encode.
Choose the clip order before you combine anything
The playlist entries—not the order in which a file browser happens to show files—determine the sequence. Give clips names that sort predictably, such as 01_intro.mp4, 02_interview.mp4, and 03_end.mp4, or write the desired order directly into the playlist. Check that list before encoding, especially when clips are part of a documentary with a specific narrative order.
The examples below assume a POSIX-style shell such as Bash and that FFmpeg is installed. Run commands from the directory containing the video files. The explicit list avoids relying on shell glob order or a directory-enumeration command that behaves differently across systems.
Create a concat playlist
In the video directory, create a plain-text file named playlist.txt with one file directive per clip:

ffconcat version 1.0
file '01_intro.mp4'
file '02_interview.mp4'
file '03_end.mp4'
Use the filenames and order that match your own clips. The optional first line identifies the file as an FFmpeg concat script. Keep the playlist and media files together and use simple relative filenames where possible. If a filename contains a single quote or an unusual path, do not assume that placing it between single quotes will escape it correctly; use a safe portable filename or carefully escape the path according to FFmpeg’s concat syntax.
Join compatible files without re-encoding
If the input streams are compatible, run this command from the same directory:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy combined.mp4
This tells FFmpeg to read entries sequentially from the concat demuxer and copy their encoded streams into combined.mp4 rather than decode and encode them again. The demuxer adjusts timestamps as it joins the files. The -safe 0 option allows paths that the default safe-path rules may reject; use it only with a playlist you created and trust. If your script contains only safe relative names, you can try -safe 1, the default, instead.

What “compatible” means
Stream copy is not a way to make unlike clips match. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” In practice, compare the clips’ stream count and layout, video and audio codecs, time bases, resolutions, frame rates, and audio properties before relying on a copy join. Duration metadata matters too: FFmpeg warns that inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts.
If the files do not have matching streams, the command may fail or the joins may have glitches, gaps, or other playback problems. Normalize the clips to consistent properties first, or use a filter-based workflow that re-encodes them.
When to use the concat filter and re-encode
Use the concat filter when you need to re-encode or make differing inputs consistent. Unlike the demuxer copy command, a filter graph works on decoded streams, so it cannot be combined with -c copy. The inputs must be mapped into the graph and brought to compatible properties, such as a common resolution, frame rate, pixel format, audio sample rate, and channel layout.

For clips whose properties are already aligned, this is an illustrative starting point for a YouTube-oriented MP4 encode:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 18 -preset medium
-c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart combined.mp4
This example encodes the demuxer input; it does not normalize clips with different resolutions, frame rates, channel layouts, or other incompatible properties. A filter graph or a preprocessing step is needed for those cases. The -crf 18 setting is an illustrative quality-oriented choice, not a guaranteed bitrate or universal best setting. Re-encoding takes additional computation and can change quality and output size.

FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. Do not confuse it with the file-level concat protocol: that protocol is limited to formats that support joining at the file level and is not the general method for combining arbitrary video files in a directory.

Choose output settings for a YouTube upload
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scanning, and AAC-LC among its supported audio choices; it also recommends 48 kHz audio and matching the frame rate used during recording. For SDR video, it recommends BT.709. These are platform recommendations, not mandatory minimums for every upload.
Reference SDR video bitrates
| Resolution | Standard frame rates | High frame rates |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p SDR | 8 Mbps (YouTube recommendation) | 12 Mbps (YouTube recommendation) |
| 720p SDR | 5 Mbps (YouTube recommendation) | 7.5 Mbps (YouTube recommendation) |
These are reference recommendations from YouTube’s upload guidance; they are not measured workflow results or a requirement to force every source to those rates. When practical, preserve the source’s native frame rate and aspect ratio. YouTube’s format guidance says the player adapts to the uploaded aspect ratio, so do not stretch or distort footage just to force it into 16:9.

Before uploading, play the start of the output and check every join. Listen for audio gaps or sync drift, watch for black frames or abrupt visual changes, and confirm that the file’s dimensions, duration, frame rate, and audio behave as intended. This check is particularly important after a copy join because stream compatibility and duration metadata affect the result.

Troubleshoot common problems
FFmpeg rejects the playlist as unsafe
Use portable relative filenames and keep the playlist beside the clips. If the paths are legitimate but rejected by the safe-path default, -safe 0 relaxes that check. Do not run a playlist containing external or untrusted paths casually.
The join has glitches, black frames, or audio gaps
Check stream count and layout, codecs, time bases, and duration information for every input. The concat demuxer requires matching streams, and inaccurate durations can cause artifacts. Normalize the files to consistent properties or use a filter-and-re-encode workflow if they differ.
The clips play in the wrong order
Edit the file entries in playlist.txt and inspect them from top to bottom. Do not assume that a directory listing, wildcard expansion, or file browser uses the narrative order you want.
The output takes a long time or is unexpectedly large
The -c copy route avoids re-encoding only when the inputs are compatible. Re-encoding requires additional computation and can affect file size and quality; the exact time and result depend on the clips and settings.

YouTube says higher-quality versions can take longer to process after upload. Do not treat missing quality options immediately after upload as proof that the encode failed; check the video again after processing has had more time.
Or let it run in the cloud
Combining clips with FFmpeg creates an uploadable file. If your next step is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream uses your uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
