To loop a prerecorded church service in a YouTube Live broadcast, add the recording to an OBS Studio Media Source and turn on Loop in that source’s properties. The setting repeats the file in the encoder’s outgoing feed; YouTube’s watch-page Loop command only repeats playback for an individual viewer.
Loop one church service recording in OBS
- Confirm livestream access. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s livestream eligibility guidance.
- Create or select an OBS scene. In OBS Studio, choose the scene that should carry the service recording.
- Add the recording. In the Sources area, select + and choose Media Source. Name it if useful, then select the local video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. In the source properties, enable Loop; it is off by default. OBS defines the setting as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed. See OBS Media Sources.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Set YouTube as the streaming service in OBS, or enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube describes the stream key as both an address and password for the encoder. Keep it private; reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings help.
- Preview and test before the service. Check the Live Control Room preview, audio and video, viewer access from the channel and watch pages, mobile playback, and any local archive file you rely on. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips.
- Keep the stream running. OBS is encoding and sending the loop, so the computer and network running OBS need to remain on and connected for the broadcast. Monitor the stream rather than assuming a local loop guarantees an unattended broadcast.
Loop a playlist instead of one file
For a sequence of service recordings or other videos, OBS documents a VLC Video source and its Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed for that source to be available; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Configure the playlist in the source, enable its loop option, then preview the order and transitions before going live. The setup details are in OBS Media Sources.
Know which loop you mean
- Encoder loop: OBS repeats the recording in the live feed, so viewers arriving later see the current point in the ongoing broadcast.
- YouTube viewer loop: A viewer’s watch-page Loop command repeats playback of a video or playlist for that viewer. It does not turn a recording into a live broadcast. See YouTube’s instructions for looping videos or playlists.
Check rights, DVR, and the archive
Music and other permissions
The church or other provider is responsible for securing the rights needed for livestreamed content, including music licensing rights. Confirm that the recording’s permissions cover rebroadcasting it and the territories where viewers may watch. YouTube sets out this responsibility in its livestream terms and conditions.
DVR and replay limits
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a livestream, but DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek back to a point before the stream began. Disabling DVR does not, by itself, prevent a full-stream recording from appearing after the broadcast once it is available. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The recording ends instead of restarting | Loop is disabled on the OBS Media Source, or the wrong source is active. | Open that source’s properties, enable Loop, and preview playback through the end of the file. |
| The stream does not connect | The channel may not be eligible, or the stream URL or key may be incorrect or outdated. | Check channel verification and restrictions, then re-copy the current connection details from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password and reset it if compromised. |
| The live preview is black or has no sound | The selected file, active scene, source settings, or audio path may be wrong. | Confirm the correct scene and recording are active, inspect the OBS audio meters, and verify both picture and sound in the Live Control Room before the event. |
| The VLC playlist source is unavailable | VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as OBS specifies. |
| The stream stops when the operator leaves | The local computer or network stopped running the encoder. | Keep the OBS machine powered on and connected, and monitor the broadcast. A source-level loop only repeats media; it does not ensure the computer or connection stays available. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping an OBS computer and home connection running is impractical, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the service recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
