For a 720p YouTube Live loop, use OBS with H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, progressive video, and RTMP or preferably RTMPS. YouTube recommends 3–8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60; choose a bitrate your tested upload connection can sustain, rather than treating the top of that range as automatically better. For a mostly static documentary image, 720p30 is a sensible starting point.
Recommended OBS settings for a 720p YouTube Live loop
YouTube’s live encoder settings list the following bitrate ranges. They vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures below are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted delivery. YouTube live encoder settings (accessed 2026) are a live page without a publication date stated here.

The 720p30 preference for a slow-moving loop is a practical configuration choice, not a YouTube rule. Higher frame rate or bitrate is not inherently better if your connection cannot reliably carry it.
Set the encoder and output
- In OBS, open Settings and select Output. Set the streaming rate control to CBR and choose a bitrate within YouTube’s recommended range for your resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use progressive scan. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- For the connection protocol, use RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
- In OBS, select the YouTube service and connect using the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
OBS labels and available encoder options can differ by version, operating system, and hardware. Use the equivalent control if your version presents different menus.

Plan upload speed around a continuous broadcast
Your upload connection must sustain the stream bitrate, with spare capacity for normal network variation and other users. YouTube’s Streaming tips page recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom and testing outbound speed. That means a 5 Mbps video bitrate calls for roughly 6.25 Mbps of available upload capacity as a planning minimum before accounting for other traffic. The calculation is bitrate divided by 0.8; it is not a guarantee of a stable stream. YouTube’s encoder settings also advise testing the actual stream.
- Check upload performance at the location and time you expect to stream; advertised plan speed does not establish the capacity available to OBS.
- Account for other people or devices sharing the connection. Their traffic reduces the capacity available to your broadcast.
- If Wi-Fi proves unreliable, a wired Ethernet connection is worth testing as a troubleshooting option. YouTube recommends network reliability but does not require Ethernet or promise that a cable will fix a particular problem.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test before starting
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the stream. YouTube’s management guidance covers stream settings, stream key management, latency, and DVR options: YouTube Live encoder guidance.
- Copy the stream key into OBS’s YouTube stream settings. Do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, manage or replace it through YouTube’s stream-key controls.
- Choose latency to suit the broadcast. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; it matters less when you are not interacting with viewers in real time.
- Start a test using audio and movement similar to the intended loop. Confirm the video, sound, and continuity at the quality you plan to use.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while the test runs, then correct any reported issues before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Enable the feature and complete any required account steps well before your planned stream, rather than assuming it will be ready immediately.

Check channel eligibility and loop content separately
Correct OBS settings only address technical delivery. They do not establish that a particular channel in India is eligible to livestream or that a proposed continuous loop meets YouTube’s current policies. Check the channel’s Live Control Room status and YouTube’s current rules before scheduling a loop. For a documentary channel, make sure you have the necessary rights to the footage, music, narration, and other material in the recording; technical settings do not grant permission to rebroadcast it.
Troubleshoot a 720p loop stream
