If a YouTube Live loop hitches exactly as one video changes to another, first check whether OBS’s network dropped-frame count rises at that moment. A rising count points to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; a steady count with a switch-synchronized gap points first to source or playlist playback. Those are different problems, so identify which one you have before changing stream settings.
Find out whether frames are dropping or playback is hitching
Run a controlled test: open OBS Stats, note the network dropped-frame count, then switch videos and watch the count. Make a local recording during the same test. Compare that recording with what viewers see. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection problem: the network is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns network dropped frames; it does not rule out a media source briefly failing to display during a switch. (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting)
- The network dropped-frame count rises: follow the network troubleshooting steps below.
- The count stays steady and the gap coincides with a source becoming visible: inspect the source’s inactive behavior and playlist arrangement.
- The local recording is clean but some viewers report buffering: check viewer playback conditions and YouTube’s stream health before changing your source setup.
- You cannot identify a pattern: save an OBS log and reproduce the switch in a local recording. The symptom alone does not establish the source type, OBS version, encoder, bitrate, or machine load.
OBS notes that viewers use different devices, locations, and internet connections, so buffering on a viewer’s end does not necessarily mean the broadcaster is dropping frames. (OBS Project: Stream Buffering Issues)
Fix gaps caused by switching sources or playlist items
Check whether a Media Source unloads while inactive
In OBS, inspect the Media Source’s Close file when inactive setting. When enabled, OBS unloads the file while its source is hidden. OBS documents that the source may take a short time to display again when it becomes visible, leaving a gap. If the source is repeatedly hidden and shown during your loop, test with this option disabled or keep the source active where practical. Check resource use on the actual streaming machine after changing the setting. (OBS Project: Media Sources)

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Review VLC Video Source playlist behavior
If you use an OBS VLC Video Source for multiple files, verify that the intended files are in its playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled if you need the list to repeat. Check Visibility Behaviour as well: the source’s response to becoming hidden or visible can affect playback. Record a test locally before returning to a live broadcast. OBS documents playlist and visibility controls, but does not promise gapless playback between clips; a VLC playlist is not a guaranteed cure for every transition hitch. (OBS Project: Media Sources)
Test the change before going live
- Reproduce the same sequence of videos in a local recording.
- Change one relevant setting at a time, such as the inactive-file behavior or playlist visibility behavior.
- Watch the transition in the recording and check whether the network dropped-frame count changes.
- Use the arrangement that removes the local transition gap without causing unacceptable resource use on the machine.
Fix rising network dropped frames
If OBS’s network dropped-frame count climbs, address the connection path rather than assuming the video switch itself is the cause. OBS recommends reducing bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, trying another ingest server if one is available, checking VPNs and security or network-optimization software, and preferring wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi. A wired connection can help with Wi-Fi instability; it will not fix a local source reload gap or an encoder/rendering overload. (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting)

- Lower the video bitrate until the connection can sustain it reliably. A speed test can help assess upload capacity, but it does not guarantee stability throughout a live event.
- Try another ingest server if your streaming setup makes another server available; the route to one server may be less stable than another.
- Temporarily check VPN, security, and bundled network optimization software. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether it affects the symptom.
- Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi when possible, then repeat the same test.
- If you suspect faulty network hardware, isolate components one at a time. If you are unsure which equipment or connection is at fault, OBS advises contacting your internet service provider before replacing hardware.
OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a fallback that can reduce bitrate during congestion rather than dropping frames. It does not resolve the underlying connection problem, and the lower bitrate reduces image quality. (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting)
Check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream health
Use a bitrate and output mode suited to your upload connection, then check YouTube’s current guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends a reliable quality level for the connection, a speed test, and a preflight test using representative motion and audio. Monitor stream health and any messages during the event. Its current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1, at up to 60 fps; it recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a source switch caused a local hitch. (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions)

For H.264 at 1080p60, YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 17 Mbps as recommended guidance. That range is specific to that codec and format; consult YouTube’s table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. Choose a setting your connection can sustain rather than treating the recommended figure as a requirement for every stream. (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions)
When the symptom appears only for viewers
If your local recording is clean and OBS’s network dropped-frame count remains steady, ask affected viewers whether the issue occurs on multiple devices or connections. Check YouTube stream health for configuration messages, including low bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch. Viewer buffering can result from conditions downstream of OBS, so changing a source’s playback settings may not help. (OBS Project: Stream Buffering Issues; YouTube Live API: liveBroadcast resource)
