How to Crossfade Videos in a Continuous YouTube Live Stream

Use separate OBS scenes and a configurable Fade transition to crossfade prerecorded clips without stopping your YouTube Live broadcast.

To crossfade prerecorded videos in a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, put the outgoing and incoming clips in separate OBS scenes, choose Fade under Scene Transitions, set its duration, and switch scenes while OBS stays live. An OBS playlist can play files in sequence, but its documented controls do not include automatic crossfades between playlist items. OBS Media Sources · OBS Studio Overview Guide

This guide covers local videos played through OBS—not a playlist on YouTube’s watch page. A scene fade handles the picture transition; check the audio separately and preview the whole sequence, since OBS documentation does not promise gapless playback between files.

Choose the right OBS setup

Use a playlist when you want a fixed or repeating sequence and do not need a transition between clips. Use separate scenes with Fade when you want to control the visual handoff between particular videos.

Approach Best for Advantages Limits
One VLC Video playlist Hands-off sequential playback Playlist, loop, shuffle, and visibility behavior in one source Documented controls do not specify per-item crossfades; VLC must be installed
Separate scenes with Fade Deliberate visual fades between clips Built-in scene transition with configurable duration; Studio Mode lets you prepare the next scene More setup; preview audio behavior with your sources
Track-matte stinger Custom branded or shaped blends Can blend scenes through an animated mask Advanced asset preparation; OBS recommends combining the stinger and matte assets in one file to avoid separate-file sync issues

OBS’s Media Sources guide describes VLC Video as a playlist option, while its overview guide documents scene transitions. These are separate controls: a playlist does not itself create a scene transition.

Set up a playlist if a simple queue is enough

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. VLC Video requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, as the OBS documentation specifies.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In the scene where the sequence should play, add the source and populate its playlist with the local video files.
  3. Choose playback behavior. Leave shuffle off for a fixed order. Turn looping on only if the list should repeat. Set the source’s visibility behavior deliberately: the documented default is to stop when it is not visible and restart when it becomes visible.
  4. Test the sequence. Play the full list, including the last-to-first handoff if looping is enabled. The playlist controls do not establish a gapless transition between media files.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation says VLC Video can create a playlist “similar to an Image Slideshow.” It describes playlist controls, but not an automatic crossfade between playlist items.

Crossfade clips with separate scenes

  1. Create a scene for each clip. In OBS, add a scene for the outgoing video and another for the incoming video. Add a Media Source to each scene and select its local file. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
  2. Match the framing. Check that both sources fit the canvas as intended and that the aspect ratio, crop, and audio are correct. A transition blends the scenes; it does not fix mismatched framing or levels.
  3. Select Fade and set its duration. In the Scene Transitions controls, choose Fade and set a duration appropriate to the footage. OBS also lists Cut, Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe, but Fade is the straightforward choice for a basic crossfade.
  4. Prepare the next scene in Studio Mode. Studio Mode lets you prepare a different scene before sending it live. Load the next clip there, check its starting frame, then take it live using the selected transition.
  5. Keep OBS streaming during the handoff. Change the program scene without stopping the broadcast. Check OBS’s stream status and YouTube’s preview before running the full sequence.
  6. Preview every transition and the full loop. Test the actual files in their intended order, including the last-to-first transition if applicable. Check picture timing and audio continuity; the official documentation describes controls, not a guarantee of gapless decoding on every file and system.

OBS documents Fade and Cut as available scene transitions and explains that transition duration is configurable in its OBS Studio Overview Guide. Its Help Portal describes OBS as connecting the computer directly to the streaming service. A scene change changes the program content being sent; it does not require ending the broadcast.

Handle audio as a separate part of the transition

A picture fade does not, by itself, prove that the two clips’ audio will crossfade cleanly. The OBS pages cited here do not provide a universal recipe for crossfading audio tracks across every source and scene arrangement. Listen to the actual output, not just the preview image. If uninterrupted music is essential, preparing a continuous audio bed is a practical production option; it is not a guarantee provided by the playlist feature.

  • Check whether each clip’s audio starts and ends where expected.
  • Listen through the entire scene transition for a pause, overlap, abrupt level change, or doubled audio.
  • Test the final-to-first handoff as well as transitions between clips.

Use a stinger for a custom visual blend

For a shaped or branded transition rather than a simple fade, OBS supports track-matte stinger transitions. An animated mask controls how the outgoing and incoming scenes blend; gray mask values allow a degree of fade between them. This is an advanced option, not necessary for a basic crossfade. OBS notes that it does not yet support lock-step video decoding for separate track-matte and stinger files, and recommends combining those assets in one file. See the OBS Track Matte Stinger Transitions guide.

Keep the YouTube broadcast live during scene changes

The transition happens in OBS’s outgoing program, while YouTube receives the stream. Keep OBS’s streaming output active as you switch scenes. YouTube’s ingest protocol is a separate setting: its HLS setup guide says HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream like RTMP. That latency distinction does not mean an OBS scene change requires ending the broadcast.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The clips play back-to-back without fading. A playlist’s sequential playback is not the same as a scene transition. Use separate scenes and select Fade, or use a stinger for a custom blend.
  • VLC Video is unavailable or does not play. Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  • The next clip does not start as expected. Check the source’s visibility behavior. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible; adjust it for the way the source is used, then test again.
  • The picture fades but the audio jumps or overlaps. Treat audio as a separate check. Listen to the full output and adjust the source arrangement or prepare a continuous audio bed if needed.
  • The loop has a pause or awkward handoff. Preview the last-to-first transition using the real files. Looping a playlist is not a documented guarantee of gapless playback.
  • The custom stinger looks out of sync. If its matte and video are separate files, consider combining them into one file, as OBS recommends for this limitation.
