OBS’s VLC Video source can display subtitles from a selected subtitle track: add the source, enable Subtitles Enabled, and select the track under Subtitle Track. Subtitles rendered this way are part of the outgoing picture; they are not YouTube captions viewers can toggle. For a continuous broadcast, test the actual files, subtitle timing, playlist loop, and visibility behavior in OBS preview before going live.
Set up subtitles in an OBS VLC Video source
- Install VLC and check its architecture. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, then add the video file or playlist you want it to play.
- Enable subtitles. In the source properties, check Subtitles Enabled.
- Choose the track. Select the appropriate entry in Subtitle Track. OBS documents track 1 as the default, but it does not define a universal track-number-to-language map for all files and containers. Check the file’s available tracks and verify the language and content in preview.
- Preview playback before broadcasting. Confirm that subtitles appear, match the spoken or on-screen content, and remain synchronized throughout the video. Test every relevant file in a playlist, not just the first item.
OBS documents subtitles as off by default and track 1 as the default selection. The controls do not guarantee that every subtitle format or file will render as intended. OBS’s Media Sources article is dated January 11, 2022; software and interface details can change, so confirm the current properties and rendered output in your installed version.
VLC subtitles versus YouTube closed captions
A VLC-source subtitle is drawn into the video composition OBS sends to YouTube. Viewers see it as part of the picture and cannot switch that rendered text off through YouTube’s caption controls. YouTube closed captions are a separate data-delivery workflow. YouTube Help puts it plainly: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.”
For text visible in the picture
Use the VLC source’s subtitle settings when the subtitles are part of the media and should appear in the broadcast image. This keeps the subtitle rendering with that source, but it does not create a selectable caption track on YouTube.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For viewer-selectable live captions
YouTube says live captions must be sent to YouTube, either embedded in the video or through supported software that sends captions over HTTP POSTs. For embedded captions, its instructions call for enabling captions in the stream setup, selecting Embedded 608/708, and configuring the encoder to provide EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. YouTube’s cited guidance says one caption track is supported at present. Consult YouTube’s live caption requirements and check the current Live Control Room options before setting up a production stream. The page names StreamText.Net among supported caption software; verify its current offering and suitability directly if considering it.
For simple fixed text
An OBS Text source can display entered text or read text from a file. That can work for a static label or message, but a file-backed text source is not automatically a timed subtitle or a caption feed to YouTube. OBS sources higher in the list appear above lower sources and can cover them, so check the source order if text obscures the video. See the OBS Sources Guide and Text Sources documentation.

Make the playlist behave as intended
OBS’s VLC source has a Loop Playlist setting that is on by default. It can restart the source after the media list reaches its end. The source’s Visibility Behaviour defaults to Stop when not visible, restart when visible. Check both settings in the source properties and test a complete playlist transition, especially if scenes or source visibility change during the broadcast.
A looping playlist is not an uptime guarantee. It only describes source playback behavior; it does not establish that OBS, the computer, the internet connection, or YouTube will remain available continuously. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring audio and video quality during an encoder stream; see its live streaming tips.

Plan the YouTube stream and archive
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as a boundary for planning rather than a promise about how a particular account or ongoing 24/7 event will behave. If an archive matters, verify the event’s actual status and resulting archive in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Before launch, check the current Live Control Room setup and ensure the media and any included subtitle material are authorized for the intended broadcast. Copyright and other channel rules apply regardless of whether a video is played through a VLC source or streamed by another method.

Troubleshoot subtitles and playback
- VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, as required by the OBS documentation.
- No subtitles appear: Confirm Subtitles Enabled is checked and choose the track that actually contains the desired subtitles. Track 1 is the documented default, not a guaranteed match for a particular language or file.
- The wrong language or subtitle content appears: Try the other available tracks and inspect the actual output in preview. Track numbering is not universal across files and containers.
- Subtitles are mistimed or missing in some playlist items: Preview each file and its transitions. The OBS documentation does not specify universal per-file format compatibility or track behavior.
- Playback stops when you expect it to continue: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled and test the end of the list. Also inspect Visibility Behaviour; its documented default stops playback when the source is not visible.
- YouTube viewers cannot turn subtitles off: VLC-source subtitles are rendered into the picture. Use a separate YouTube live-caption workflow if viewers need selectable captions.
- Text covers the video: Review the OBS source order. Items higher in the list render above lower sources.
- The stream or archive does not behave as expected: Preview and monitor the encoder stream, and verify the actual event and archive in YouTube Studio. The under-12-hour archive guidance does not establish behavior for every 24/7 event.
