YouTube channel memberships are its direct recurring-payment model: viewers pay monthly for perks a creator offers to members. To enable them, you must qualify for and be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), meet the feature’s requirements, and activate the applicable commerce terms. Subscriber counts alone do not guarantee access or income.
If you are asking, “How do I monetize a YouTube channel with subscriptions?”, start by checking the Earn area in YouTube Studio for your channel’s eligibility and available features. Then decide what ongoing members-only value you can deliver. Memberships are one part of YouTube monetization, alongside fan support, ads, YouTube Premium revenue, and Shopping.
What are YouTube channel memberships?
YouTube describes memberships as recurring monthly payments in exchange for members-only perks offered by the creator. Examples include member badges and emoji; creators can also offer other eligible benefits. A membership is therefore not simply a way to pay for any video on the channel: it is an ongoing offer whose perks and terms should be clear to viewers before they join.
Before setting up a membership, specify what each level includes, how members can access its perks, and how you will keep delivering value over time. YouTube’s guidance establishes the recurring-payment model, but it does not establish a universally effective price, typical conversion rate, or expected monthly income.

How do I monetize a YouTube channel with subscriptions?
- Check your channel in YouTube Studio. Open the Earn area and review the eligibility and features shown for your account. Availability depends on your location and channel status, and YouTube can apply content exclusions or feature-specific requirements.
- Qualify for YPP and apply. The relevant subscriber and activity thresholds are described below. Meeting a threshold is not acceptance: YouTube reviews the channel for compliance with its monetization policies.
- Review the commerce terms and feature access. Fan-funding features require the applicable Commerce Product Module terms and individual feature activation. Channels still operating under the older Commerce Product Addendum may have different transition steps; follow the agreement and prompts presented to your channel.
- Design the membership offer. Explain the recurring nature of the payment, the perks included at each level, and how members receive them. Choose an offer you can sustain rather than promising benefits you cannot reliably provide.
- Keep the channel eligible and deliver the perks. YouTube can review a channel after acceptance and remove monetization access if it no longer qualifies or violates policies. Check the current terms and the Earn area for account-specific status.
How many subscribers do I need to make money on YouTube?
There are two major YPP threshold routes described in YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026. The lower, expanded-YPP threshold can open earlier access to fan funding and Shopping where those features are available; the higher threshold is associated with ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue. Both require more than a subscriber count, and neither guarantees acceptance.
| YPP route | Subscriber and activity threshold | What it can provide |
|---|---|---|
| Expanded YPP early access | 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days | Earlier access to fan-funding features and Shopping, where available and subject to feature-specific eligibility |
| Higher YPP eligibility route | 1,000 subscribers, and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days | Eligibility route associated with ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue, subject to review and other requirements |
These are YouTube’s published thresholds in guidance accessed in 2026, not automatic approval rules. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for your channel’s current status, available features, and requirements. YouTube’s feature availability, location rules, and agreement terms can change.

How memberships compare with other YouTube monetization models
Each option asks viewers to support a channel in a different way. Memberships are recurring; other fan-funding features are tied to a message, a video, or a one-time purchase, while ad and Premium revenue depend on eligible viewing. Shopping is product commerce, not a channel subscription.
| Model | How the viewer pays or supports | What the creator should explain |
|---|---|---|
| Channel memberships | Recurring monthly payment | Members-only perks, level structure, eligibility, and the ongoing value members receive |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | Fan purchases associated with eligible live chat or Premieres | The interaction format and feature eligibility |
| Super Thanks | One-time fan support on eligible videos or Shorts | That it is one-time support, distinct from a monthly membership |
| Ads, including Shorts Feed ads | Revenue share associated with eligible ad activity and applicable platform terms | Eligibility, advertiser-friendly content rules, and the absence of guaranteed earnings |
| YouTube Premium | A portion of subscription fees when Premium subscribers watch eligible content | This is viewing-based platform revenue, not a membership the creator sells |
| Shopping | Product sales and, for eligible creators, promotion of products from other brands | Keep product commerce separate from memberships; affiliate eligibility applies to promotion of other brands |
YouTube does not establish a typical membership income, conversion rate, or which of these models is most profitable. The right fit depends on what your audience values, what your channel is eligible to use, and what you can consistently deliver.

What creators receive from membership payments
YouTube states that its Commerce Product Module pays creators 70% of net revenue from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. That published share is not 70% of a creator’s total channel revenue, nor does it predict take-home earnings: the figure applies to net revenue under the module, and YouTube provides no guarantee about whether or how much a partner will be paid.
For that reason, do not treat a subscriber target, membership price, or revenue-share percentage as an income forecast. Actual earnings are not established by the eligibility figures alone.

Policies and ongoing eligibility
YPP acceptance and feature access are conditional. YouTube reviews channels against its monetization policies, and access can be removed if a channel no longer meets requirements or violates policy. Location, age, channel status, content criteria, and feature-specific conditions can also matter. Review the current YouTube terms and the status displayed for your own channel rather than assuming that another creator’s availability applies to you.
Memberships also create a continuing obligation to describe and deliver the promised perks. Make the scope of the offer understandable to prospective members and keep it aligned with YouTube’s applicable commerce terms and policies.
