Unlisted videos are viewable by anyone with the link; private videos are viewable only by the owner and people specifically invited. Neither normally appears in YouTube search or the channel’s Videos tab. Choose unlisted for easy link sharing, and private when access must be limited to named viewers.
Unlisted vs. private: the key differences

This comparison reflects YouTube Help’s descriptions of video privacy settings. “Unlisted” is not a confidentiality setting: if someone forwards the link, the recipient can watch. For sensitive material, use private access and invite only the intended accounts.
Which setting should you choose?
- Choose unlisted when you want to send a link without inviting each viewer. It is also the suitable choice if viewers need to comment while the video stays out of ordinary public listings.
- Choose private when only specific people should be able to watch. Make sure each person uses the account to which you granted access.
- Choose public if you want general discovery: public videos can appear in search, recommendations, channel listings, and subscriber feeds.
Neither unlisted nor private means YouTube itself cannot review the video. YouTube says its systems and human reviewers may review private videos for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention.
How to change a video’s visibility
You can change a video’s privacy setting in YouTube Studio. Open the video’s visibility setting and choose the option that matches your audience: public, unlisted, or private. For a private video, invite the intended viewers; for an unlisted one, share its link with the understanding that recipients can pass it on.

Important exceptions and older uploads
Google Workspace for Education and Classroom
YouTube says private videos do not play in services such as Google Classroom. If learners need to open a video there, YouTube describes unlisted as an accessible, non-searchable alternative. Keep in mind that unlisted viewers can reshare the link, so this is not equivalent to restricting access to a class roster.
Unlisted uploads from before 2017
YouTube’s historical change applied to unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017. Starting July 23, 2021, YouTube changed the status of those videos unless their owners opted out. If an older unlisted link behaves unexpectedly, check the video’s current visibility in YouTube Studio. YouTube also says older links that remained unlisted do not receive the security update introduced in 2017.
