None of these copies replaces the others: a Profile export does not include scenes, and portable mode does not bundle scene media.
Set up OBS portable mode on Windows
- Download the OBS Studio ZIP distribution and extract it to a folder you control. OBS advises against placing it in
Program Files. - In the extracted OBS root folder, create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, launchbin/64bit/obs64.exewith the--portableargument. - Configure OBS as needed. Portable mode keeps OBS configuration alongside the application, but it does not make external media files portable.
OBS documents portable mode for Windows; its current portable-mode guidance says macOS and Linux portable mode are unsupported. See OBS portable mode documentation.
Back up each part of the setup

Export the Profile
Save or export the active Profile as JSON. Profiles include stream, video, and output settings, but OBS states that scenes are not included. Keep this JSON as a useful, narrow backup—not as the sole copy of the setup. See OBS Profiles documentation.
Preserve scenes and their dependencies
Save the Scene Collection separately. Inspect its sources and copy every referenced image and media file. If you relocate OBS or restore it on another drive, validate source paths: portable mode does not bundle these files, and moving the installation can leave paths broken. Keep a second portable-folder copy
Copy the entire portable OBS folder to separate storage. A separate physical destination, such as an external drive, is a practical way to keep another copy; OBS does not prescribe a particular drive or backup medium. After copying, verify that the backup exists and that you can access the Profile, Scene Collection, and assets.
Record plugins before restoring
Write down each plugin’s name and version, then check its compatibility and installation path when restoring. Availability can vary by platform, architecture, and OBS version. Current Windows portable-plugin guidance uses a plugins folder in the portable root with the updated layout. The older obs-plugins layout is identified as legacy, and plugins in ProgramData are ignored for portable launches. Consult OBS plugin documentation and OBS portable plugin locations for the layout applicable to your installation.

Restore and verify before relying on the PC
- Restore the portable folder to its intended location and confirm OBS launches in portable mode.
- Restore or import the Profile JSON, then check the stream, video, and output settings in OBS.
- Restore the Scene Collection and open each scene. Check for missing-source warnings and confirm that image and media paths point to files that exist.
- Restore plugins using versions and paths compatible with the installed OBS version, platform, and architecture. Confirm OBS loads them.
- Test the complete setup after restoration, including a launch and stream test appropriate to your channel, before depending on the PC unattended.
OBS’s backup and launch documentation establishes how to preserve its configuration and start the application; it does not establish that a particular YouTube account, stream key, playlist source, restart behavior, or 24/7 operation will work unattended. Treat a successful file restore and a reliable continuous broadcast as separate things to verify.
Launch OBS automatically on Windows
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. For Windows scheduled tasks and other automated launches, its launch guide says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Follow the guide for the launch method you choose: OBS launch parameters and automation guidance.

This parameter starts streaming; it is not a backup or a guarantee of unattended operation. Test startup and restoration on the actual PC before relying on them for a continuous channel. The available OBS guidance cited here does not establish YouTube playlist-specific setup or reliable 24/7 restart and recovery practices.
