Before the livestream: make an event people can find
Schedule the stream and share its link early
Schedule the livestream in YouTube so you have a stable event link to share. YouTube recommends: “Share your streaming link at least 48 hours before you go live.” Treat that as platform guidance, not a proven optimal interval for every audience. Put the link directly in posts where the platform and placement allow it; if they do not, point people to your channel or link-in-bio route.
Give people a reason to attend
Make a short teaser or channel trailer that explains what viewers will get by attending, when the stream starts, and where to watch. Link the scheduled event from your social posts and prioritize the services where your intended viewers already follow you. YouTube also recommends connecting social accounts to your channel.
Use your channel and website as additional reminders
- Use the channel’s Live section to surface upcoming and live events.
- Embed the scheduled stream on your website if you have one.
- Consider sharing the URL with relevant blogs that may display or feature the event.
For music channels specifically, YouTube for Artists recommends promoting a planned livestream or afterparty across social channels and keeping a consistent schedule. That advice is aimed at music creators; it is not a guarantee that a particular cadence will work for other channels.

Choose platforms by audience and link options
There is no universally best social platform established for promoting a livestream. Decide based on where your current audience is active, whether a post can carry a clickable link or needs a channel/link-in-bio route, whether you are sharing a teaser, reminder, or highlight, and whether you can maintain a consistent schedule. Link behavior and placement rules vary and can change, so check the platform’s current options before relying on a specific link route.
During the livestream: create timely reminders and shareable moments
Make highlights while the stream is live
Where your format and production setup allow, create highlight clips during the event. A concise clip can give people who have not joined a timely reason to visit the live stream or help current viewers share a memorable moment.

Update your channel banner
YouTube recommends updating the channel banner with the event name, date, and time as an additional reminder for people who visit your channel while the event is underway.
Invite the community to share
When it fits your community, ask viewers to share the event or invite friends who would be interested. TikTok LIVE Studio gives this advice for TikTok LIVE; it is a general community prompt, not a YouTube-specific sharing feature.

After the livestream: make the recording useful
Check the archive’s visibility
YouTube automatically uploads a livestream archive by default. YouTube says making the archive public can increase the reach of future streams. Check the archive’s visibility after the event so viewers can find it.

Put the archive and highlight clips into playlists so later viewers can find related material. A playlist also gives people who discover one clip a clear next place to continue watching.
Know the conditions for a mobile Short highlight
For eligible mobile streams, YouTube may offer a Short highlight. YouTube Help lists eligibility conditions including a stream between 10 minutes and 12 hours, vertical format through the YouTube mobile app, and enabled chat, along with other conditions. The saved Short is private by default; set it public if you want it available in the Shorts feed.

Choose a stream format that supports your promotion plan
YouTube documents mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming and recommends choosing the method suited to the content; expensive equipment is not required to get started. A horizontal stream suits the conventional viewing experience and its feature set. YouTube’s current Live Control Room also supports simultaneous horizontal and vertical streams: the vertical version may be discoverable in the Shorts feed, while subscribers receive one go-live notification with a shared URL. The vertical live experience has feature differences; YouTube’s comparison lists no clickable links in chat or the channel description for the vertical live feed. Review YouTube’s current feature comparison before choosing a format, especially if interactive links are important to the event.
