Recommended Free Tools
You can start a podcast with a clear show idea, a phone or computer, a microphone, a way to record and edit, and an RSS feed that directories can read. You do not need to buy a full studio before recording your first episode. Decide what the show is, make a short test recording, choose either a podcast host or a self-managed feed, and submit it to the listening platforms that fit your audience.
Plan a show you can make consistently
Before shopping for equipment, define the show in a few practical terms. A simple plan makes it easier to record a pilot and decide what tools you actually need.
- Audience: Who is the show for, and what will they come to hear?
- Subject and promise: What does each episode explore or explain?
- Format: Will you tell a story, host a conversation, report a topic, or use another repeatable structure?
- Length and cadence: Choose a realistic episode length and publishing schedule you can sustain.
- Audio or video: Decide whether the podcast is audio-first or whether you also plan to produce video episodes.
Treat the first episode as a pilot: it can help you find the pacing and workflow before you settle into a regular schedule.
What equipment do you need to start?
A workable starting setup can be a computer or phone, a recording app, and a microphone. A USB podcast microphone is one possible option, not a requirement. The platform requirements described here specify delivered audio formats and encoding; they do not require a particular microphone, computer, or recording application.

Start with what you have and make a test recording. If you decide to add or change equipment, check that it works with your device and recording app, and consider your room noise, how you will monitor the recording, and how easy the setup is to use. No specific microphone model or price is established here.
Record and prepare your first episode
Make a short test first
- Open your recording app and confirm it recognizes the microphone you intend to use.
- Record a short sample in the place where you plan to work.
- Listen back for intelligibility, background noise, and any level problems before recording the full episode.
- Record the episode, then edit obvious mistakes and pauses and listen through the finished file.
These are practical production steps rather than requirements set by Apple or YouTube. The important publishing choice is to export a file compatible with the destinations you intend to use.

Export audio for an Apple RSS feed
Apple accepts MP3 or AAC audio for RSS shows. For RSS audio sampled at 44.1 or 48 kHz, Apple lists these recommended bitrate ranges:
| Channel format | Apple-listed bitrate range |
|---|---|
| Mono | 64–128 kbps |
| Stereo | 128–256 kbps |
These are Apple’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that every file at those settings will sound identical. Smaller files can mean a quality trade-off. Apple says AAC can provide better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate and recommends MP4 packaging for AAC for streaming efficiency and seeking. Choose settings that suit the recording and check the exported file before uploading.

Choose how to create and manage your RSS feed
Your RSS feed carries show and episode information and points listening services to episode media. There are two main approaches: use a podcast hosting provider that creates and manages the feed, or generate and host the feed yourself. Apple documents both; it does not identify one as best for every creator.
| Approach | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Podcast host | A provider can package show information and episode media into an RSS feed and may help manage it. Compare its feed workflow and support with the features you need. |
| Self-managed RSS | You generate and host the feed yourself. This gives you responsibility for feed setup, public availability, technical upkeep, and submission workflow. |
When comparing providers or a self-managed workflow, look for the capabilities relevant to your show, such as feed management, directory submission assistance, analytics, chapters, transcripts, subscriptions, or advertising features. Do not assume a listed feature is included on every provider plan.

Submit an RSS podcast to Apple Podcasts
For an RSS show, Apple submission requires an Apple Podcasts Connect account, a compliant publicly addressable feed, required tags, at least one episode, and artwork. The feed needs properly formed episode enclosure details. Apple’s guidance also describes server support for HTTP HEAD and byte-range requests.
- Prepare the show and feed. Add the required show and episode information, artwork, and at least one episode. Confirm the feed is publicly reachable and that its enclosure details are properly formed.
- Check how it appears. Apple suggests adding the show by URL in the Podcasts app to inspect the artwork and media display.
- Validate the feed. Use Apple’s technical validation process to check feed structure, tags, cover art, and episode files.
- Submit through Apple Podcasts Connect. Complete submission using an Apple Podcasts Connect account.
Validation is a technical check, not the content approval decision. Passing it does not itself guarantee that Apple will approve the show.

Publish on YouTube as well
YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist of video episodes. You can upload video episodes directly, or, in selected countries and regions, submit an RSS feed. With RSS ingestion, YouTube can create static-art videos from audio episodes and automatically upload newly added episodes. That RSS route distributes the show only to YouTube and YouTube Music; it does not submit it to other podcast platforms.
Choose the YouTube workflow that fits your material
- Audio-first show: RSS ingestion may be an option if it is available in your country or region and static-art video suits the show.
- Show with video: Upload video episodes if you want the visual episode itself to appear on YouTube.
- Platform-specific publishing: Consider a direct video workflow if you want to manage video episodes separately from your RSS distribution.
YouTube’s guidance says podcast playlists should contain full-length episodes in their intended listening order. RSS ingestion eligibility is geographically limited, so check whether the option is available to you before planning around it.
Common setup problems and what to check
- The test recording is hard to understand: Listen back before recording a full episode. Check the microphone selection, your recording level, and background noise in the room.
- The exported file is rejected or does not play as expected: For an Apple RSS episode, confirm the file is MP3 or AAC and review its export settings and packaging.
- The RSS feed cannot be submitted: Check that it is publicly addressable, includes required tags, artwork, and at least one episode, and has properly formed enclosure details. Review the server requirements in Apple’s feed guidance.
- Technical validation passes but the show is not approved: Validation checks technical requirements and does not decide content approval.
- You cannot find RSS submission for YouTube: RSS ingestion is available only in selected countries and regions. Use direct video uploads if that workflow better fits your show or the RSS option is unavailable.
- YouTube shows an audio episode with static artwork: That is how its RSS ingestion route can represent audio episodes; it is not the same as uploading a video recording of the episode.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you also want to keep pre-recorded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a separate option from podcast publishing: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
