For a standard YouTube video, use a 16:9 frame; 1920Ă—1080 is a clear default export size. For a Short, use a square or vertical frame. Keep thumbnail dimensions separate from video dimensions: YouTube recommends 16:9 thumbnails for standard videos and 9:16 thumbnails for Shorts.
What is the best aspect ratio for YouTube videos?
For standard widescreen videos, the default is 16:9. YouTube lists 1920×1080 for 1080p, alongside other 16:9 resolutions: 1280×720, 2560×1440, and 3840×2160. Choose a resolution that suits your source footage and intended quality; aspect ratio describes the frame’s shape, not its pixel count. What size should a YouTube video be?
If you are exporting a conventional widescreen documentary or episode, 1920Ă—1080 at 16:9 is a straightforward default. If your source and production workflow support a higher resolution, YouTube also lists 2560Ă—1440 and 3840Ă—2160 at the same ratio. A 1280Ă—720 export is another listed 16:9 size.

Match the frame shape to the footage and the intended viewing format. Avoid adding black bars or padding directly to the video just to force it into 16:9: YouTube advises against this, and its player adapts to the uploaded video’s shape and the viewer’s device. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance also covers encoding settings, which are separate from choosing a frame ratio.
What aspect ratio should YouTube Shorts be?
Use a square or vertical frame for a Short. YouTube does not specify one mandatory pixel resolution for every Short in the cited guidance; do not mistake the 9:16 thumbnail recommendation for a video-upload requirement.

For standard channels, YouTube says videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, with a square or vertical aspect ratio and a duration of up to three minutes are categorized as Shorts. The rule includes both the upload date and duration, not just the frame shape. Official Artist Channels have a separate transition date of December 8, 2025, described on the same three-minute Shorts guidance page. YouTube’s computer upload instructions likewise describe Shorts as square or vertical and up to three minutes.
How does YouTube display different video shapes?
The standard computer player uses 16:9 as its default, but the player changes to fit other uploaded shapes and the viewing device. You do not need to add side bars to square or vertical footage. On Android, YouTube says its player adapts to vertical, square, and horizontal video; the portrait player becomes taller for square and vertical videos and shorter for widescreen. Choosing a frame and exporting it
- Choose the placement. Use 16:9 for a standard widescreen video. Use square or vertical framing when making a video intended to qualify as a Short.
- Set the canvas to match the footage. For standard widescreen, 1920Ă—1080 is a useful default; YouTube also lists 1280Ă—720, 2560Ă—1440, and 3840Ă—2160. For square or vertical video, select the frame shape appropriate to your edit rather than treating a thumbnail size as a video specification.
- Keep the image edge-to-edge. Do not bake black bars or padding into the video merely to make a non-widescreen frame appear as 16:9. The player adapts to the uploaded shape.
- Export the thumbnail separately. YouTube recommends 16:9 for a standard-video thumbnail and 9:16 for a Shorts thumbnail, with suggested resolutions of 3840Ă—2160 and 2160Ă—3840 respectively.
- Check Short eligibility where relevant. For a standard channel, the stated rule covers square or vertical videos up to three minutes uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. Check YouTube’s guidance for the applicable channel type and date.
