Choose an SDI encoder by matching it to your source signal and streaming destination—not by the SDI connector alone. Confirm the exact SDI rate and video format, resolution and frame rate, codec and transport protocol, audio and ancillary-data needs, and the number of channels. A compact HD appliance, a single-channel UHD encoder, and a multi-channel contribution system solve different problems; there is no universal best choice.
What an SDI encoder does—and what the label does not tell you
An SDI encoder takes a video signal from equipment such as a camera or switcher and encodes it for delivery over an IP streaming workflow. Products sold as SDI encoders range from compact, single-input appliances that send a stream directly to a service or server to rack systems designed for multi-channel contribution, distribution, and format conversion. For example, Magewell Ultra Stream SDI is a compact streaming appliance, while AJA BRIDGE LIVE covers more complex encode, decode, and transcode workflows.
“SDI” describes an interface family, not a guarantee that a device accepts every SDI signal. A connector that fits is not proof that the encoder supports the signal’s rate, resolution, frame rate, or level. Nor does support for H.264 automatically mean the device can send to a particular platform: the destination must accept the chosen combination of codec and transport protocol.
Compare the encoder types against your workflow
| Workflow class and example | Documented capabilities | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Compact HD streaming appliance: Magewell Ultra Stream SDI | Up to 2048Ă—1080 at 60 fps; H.264 or HEVC; RTMP/RTMPS and RTSP. It can stream to two servers simultaneously and record to internal storage, USB, or a phone. | Its listed maximum is not 4K/2160p. Confirm the required output resolution, protocol, and bitrate against your destination. |
| Single-channel HD/UHD encoder: Blackmagic Streaming Encoder 4K | One SDI input; listed SDI rates of 1.5G, 3G, 6G, and 12G; input formats through 2160p60. Supports RTMP with H.264 and SRT with H.264 or H.265. The specifications also document CEA-608/708 captions on RTMP and source timecode over RTMP/SRT. | Match the precise source format, destination protocol, and codec requirement. The manufacturer page is regional and displays a Singapore-dollar price; that is not a universal current price. |
| Single-channel 3G-SDI encoder: TBS2602V2 | One SD/HD/3G-SDI input; H.264/H.265; two output streams; listed protocols include RTMP/RTMPS, SRT, HLS, and RTSP. Maximum listed output is 1920Ă—1080p60. | It is an HD-ceiling example. Verify the destination accepts the selected output mode, and check availability in your region. |
| Multi-channel contribution system: AJA BRIDGE LIVE | Variants with 3G-SDI or 12G-SDI I/O; bidirectional encode/decode/transcode; listed protocols include SRT, HLS, RTMP/S, RTP, and UDP. BRIDGE LIVE 3G-8 is listed for up to eight HD channels; 12G-4 for up to four UHD channels. | Determine channel count, transport, redundancy, and deployment needs before comparing a rack system with a single-channel box. |
| Multi-input encoder: Osprey Talon configurations | Configurations include four 3G-SDI inputs or one 12G-SDI input, with H.264/H.265 and RTMP(S), SRT, UDP, RTP, RTSP, and other transports. | Capabilities differ by Talon model and operating mode. Check the exact configuration against your source and destination. |
These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not independent performance or reliability test results. Product specifications and availability may change; consult the current specification for the exact model and verify the complete workflow with your own signal and destination.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check source compatibility before buying
- Write down the source output. Record the camera or switcher’s SDI type or rate, resolution, frame rate, and any relevant level-A/level-B constraint. Do not settle for “1080p” if the source also specifies a particular frame rate or SDI mode.
- Match every signal detail to the encoder specification. Confirm that the exact input format is supported. The cited Blackmagic line documents automatic SMPTE level A/B detection on SDI input; TBS lists level A and B support for its 3G-SDI 1080p modes. Those specifications should not be generalized to other models.
- Check the resolution and frame-rate ceiling. The TBS2602V2’s listed maximum is 1920Ă—1080p60, whereas Blackmagic lists supported inputs through 2160p60 for its 4K model. Choose by the signal you actually need to pass, not by a “4K” or “HD” label alone.
- Plan for conversion if the signal does not match. Establish whether the source, encoder, or another part of the chain must convert the format. Do not assume a device accepts an unsupported frame rate or silently converts it.
Verify codec, protocol, and destination together
Codec and transport are separate compatibility checks. H.264 or H.265 describes video compression; RTMP, RTMPS, SRT, RTSP, HLS, RTP, and UDP describe ways the encoded stream may be delivered. A device supporting a codec and a protocol individually does not prove that every combination is supported in every mode.
- Identify which protocol the platform, server, or receiving equipment expects, and whether it accepts H.264, H.265, or both.
- Confirm that the encoder supports that protocol-codec combination for the required resolution and frame rate.
- Check stream count and destination count. Magewell lists simultaneous streaming to two servers; TBS lists two output streams. Confirm what “two” means for the exact configuration you intend to use.
- For contribution or distribution workflows, include the receiver and any required decode, transcode, or onward-delivery stage in the compatibility check.
For instance, Blackmagic documents RTMP with H.264 and SRT with H.264/H.265; Magewell lists RTMP/RTMPS and RTSP. These are different protocol and codec options, not interchangeable promises. Verify the destination’s current requirements before purchase.

Account for audio, captions, timecode, and operations
A picture that reaches the destination is not necessarily a complete production feed. Check the exact model’s specifications for the ancillary functions your workflow needs:
- Audio: Confirm embedded-audio support and channel capacity, audio mapping, and whether a separate analog or line input is required. Do not assume every SDI encoder handles audio inputs the same way.
- Captions and timecode: If captions or source timecode must reach the destination, verify support end to end. Blackmagic documents CEA-608/708 captions on RTMP and source timecode over RTMP/SRT for the cited model.
- Monitoring and recording: Check for local recording, monitoring, and the recording destination you need. Magewell documents recording to internal storage, USB, or a phone; Osprey specifications include recording features.
- Control and resilience: For critical operations, review control and monitoring options, power arrangements, and redundancy in the exact model specification. A feature listing alone does not establish how reliable a unit will be in your environment.
Use this buying checklist
- Document the source’s SDI rate/type, video format, frame rate, and level-A/B needs.
- Confirm explicit support for that exact signal at the encoder input.
- Write down the destination’s accepted protocol and codec, then check that the encoder supports the combination you will use.
- Choose the required resolution, number of simultaneous channels, and whether the job is direct streaming or encode/decode/transcode.
- Check audio mapping and embedded-audio capacity, plus any caption, timecode, monitoring, and recording requirements.
- For an operationally important stream, compare power, redundancy, control, and monitoring details for the exact models, then arrange a workflow trial if possible.
Or let it run in the cloud
An SDI encoder is for getting a live production signal into a streaming workflow. If instead your goal is to keep prerecorded videos live on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
