If your live stream is stuttering, first find out who is seeing the problem. OBS dropped frames point to a broadcaster-side connection or bitrate problem; a viewer’s buffering can happen even when the broadcaster is sending normally. Check each side separately, then test your upload path, bitrate, local network, and—if only viewers are affected—their playback conditions.
Is it broadcaster-side dropped frames or viewer buffering?
In OBS, dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Too many dropped frames can disconnect the broadcaster. This is an operational sign of a connection or throughput problem, not proof by itself of packet loss: the OBS guidance does not provide a packet-level measurement method. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting (dated 2024-09-30) explains the distinction.
Viewers can experience lag, buffering, or repeated loading even when OBS shows no dropped frames. Their location, internet connection, and device can affect playback; a specific broadcaster’s configuration can also be involved. OBS Project’s buffering guide and Twitch’s playback troubleshooting both recognize that playback trouble can occur on the viewer’s side.
- Only the broadcaster sees OBS dropped frames: investigate the upload connection, route to the ingest server, bitrate, and local network.
- Many viewers report buffering, but OBS is stable: check whether the issue affects viewers on different networks and devices; consider stream settings and platform playback.
- One viewer or device has trouble: have that viewer refresh or restart the player, test another stream and site, and try a different network or device.
- Several streams or sites fail for the same viewer: their local network, router, or internet connection becomes a stronger possibility.
Why packet loss and stream interruptions happen
Unstable upload capacity or a poor route
A speed test measures a connection under its own test conditions; a high result does not establish that the path to a particular streaming ingest server is stable. Try another ingest server and see whether the symptom changes. For Twitch on Windows, OBS points to TwitchTest for comparing server quality scores. You can also test another streaming service: if that works, it helps identify a service-specific route or ingest issue, but it does not repair the original path.

Bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain
A configured bitrate that is too close to—or above—stable upload capacity can leave too little room for network variation. OBS recommends about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal threshold. Use stable upload capacity rather than a single peak speed-test result, and respect the streaming platform’s limits. If dropped frames continue, lower the outgoing bitrate and test again.
Wi-Fi, network hardware, or local software
Wi-Fi can be unstable, and local problems may also involve a modem or router, network adapter or cable, outdated network drivers, VPN, firewall or antivirus software, or bundled network-prioritization utilities. Change one factor at a time so you can tell what matters. Replacing hardware before isolating a likely faulty component can waste money—and cannot fix congestion or routing beyond your home.

Viewer-side playback conditions
Buffering can arise from a viewer’s connection, device, browser, or playback environment. Twitch lists unstable connectivity, router or modem issues, and browser extensions among possible causes of Error Code 2000. That code indicates an internet-network problem in Twitch’s guidance; it does not prove that packet loss is the precise cause.
Fix OBS dropped frames step by step
- Check the OBS dropped-frame counter. Confirm whether frames are being dropped before changing settings. Note when the problem happens and whether it coincides with a particular ingest server, service, or time of day.
- Test a different ingest server. Select another server in your streaming setup and make a comparable test. For Twitch on Windows, use TwitchTest to compare server quality scores, as OBS recommends.
- Compare another streaming service if practical. A stable test elsewhere can help isolate a service-specific route or ingest problem. It is a diagnostic comparison, not a fix for the original route.
- Set a more conservative bitrate. Use OBS’s approximately 75%-of-total-upload figure only as a starting point. Base adjustments on stable upload capacity and the platform’s bitrate limits; lower the bitrate, then check whether dropped frames fall.
- Try wired Ethernet. If you are on Wi-Fi, connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. Inspect the cable and local connection if wired networking is already in use. Consider a replacement cable only if inspection or testing points to it; a new cable will not solve ISP congestion, a bad external route, server trouble, or viewer-side Wi-Fi.
- Restart the modem and router. Check whether other devices also have connectivity trouble. If the problem remains, avoid repeatedly changing unrelated settings; continue with controlled tests.
- Test VPN and network-prioritization software. Temporarily test without a VPN or bundled prioritization utility. If firewall or antivirus interference is suspected, temporarily disable the suspected software only to test, then restore protection. If the test confirms interference, configure an OBS exception in that product rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Check network drivers. Update the network driver using the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s guidance, then retest.
- Review OBS network options carefully. OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows, as well as dynamic bitrate adjustment as a beta option in its guidance. Dynamic bitrate may lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying cause and can reduce picture quality. Names and availability of settings may vary by OBS version, so consult the current version’s settings and documentation.
- Leave Bind to IP at Default unless testing. OBS recommends Default. As a troubleshooting test, it suggests trying IPv4 Only; if that makes no difference, return to the IPv4 and IPv6 default.
- Contact your ISP if the problem persists. Give the provider the times of the issue, the services or ingest servers affected, your wired-versus-Wi-Fi test results, and whether other devices are affected. Congestion or routing beyond your home may not be something you can correct in OBS.
OBS’s full connection troubleshooting guidance covers the sender-side checks described above.

Fix viewer buffering without misdiagnosing packet loss
- Refresh or restart the player. Then try another stream. If only one stream is affected, the issue may be specific to that broadcaster’s configuration.
- Check other sites and services. If those also fail, investigate the viewer’s internet connection or local network rather than assuming the broadcaster is dropping frames.
- Try another device or network. If playback improves, the original device, browser, Wi-Fi, or network path may be involved. Browser extensions are one possible cause Twitch identifies for Error Code 2000.
- Ask whether other viewers are affected. Reports from viewers on different networks help distinguish an individual playback problem from a broader stream or platform issue.
- If you are the broadcaster, consider a more compatible output. Lower bitrate—and, if needed, resolution, quality, or frame rate—can help more viewers receive the stream, particularly when the platform does not transcode it. The trade-off is lower picture detail or motion quality.
Twitch publishes the following recommended viewer download speeds. These are Twitch’s viewing recommendations, not broadcaster upload targets, packet-loss thresholds, or guarantees against buffering; 1440p60 is not available everywhere. The figures are from Twitch’s playback troubleshooting page, accessed 2026-10-03.
| Playback quality | Twitch recommended download speed |
|---|---|
| 1440p60 | 9–18 Mbps or higher (not available everywhere) |
| 1080p60 | 7–12 Mbps or higher |
| 720p60 | 3–6 Mbps or higher |
| 480p | 1.1–3 Mbps or higher |
| 360p | 0.7–1.5 Mbps or higher |
Can retransmission or FEC fix packet loss?
At the transport-protocol level, repair methods can recover some lost media data, but they use network capacity and are not a universal creator-side switch. In WebRTC/RTP, RFC 8834 requires RTP senders to understand generic NACK feedback, while allowing them to ignore some or all of it. Retransmission adds forward bandwidth and can potentially worsen packet loss when congestion caused the original loss. Forward error correction (FEC) can protect against some packet loss, but adds steady bandwidth overhead.

Those details describe WebRTC/RTP transport design; they do not mean Twitch or YouTube creators can enable retransmission or FEC in an ordinary player setting. The older general treatment in RFC 2354 and the operational discussion in RFC 9317 provide context, not a universal settings recommendation. RFC 9317 also discusses how delay variation—including bufferbloat, Wi-Fi error correction, and packet reordering—can matter for ultra-low-latency delivery.

The cited platform and standards guidance does not establish one universal packet-loss percentage that makes every live stream acceptable, nor does it establish a general rate at which streams experience packet loss. Your symptom, platform, stream settings, route, and viewer conditions matter. Diagnose the affected part of the delivery chain rather than treating a single percentage as a universal pass/fail line.
