Use 1080p if your platform, upload connection and encoder can sustain its higher bitrate without instability. Choose 720p when bandwidth or encoding capacity is limited, or when a dependable stream matters more than extra detail. Resolution alone does not determine how good a stream looks: frame rate, codec, bitrate, motion, encoder performance and the viewer’s connection all matter.
What changes when you choose 1080p instead of 720p?
1080p carries more spatial detail than 720p, but it generally requires more bitrate to deliver that detail. A higher frame rate can make motion look smoother, while also increasing the encoding workload. The best setting is the highest one your whole streaming path can sustain reliably—not simply the largest resolution in your encoder menu.
The bitrate recommendations below are for the stream sent to YouTube (ingest). They are not a promise that every viewer receives video at that bitrate: YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions.
YouTube bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate
YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists different recommended bitrates for H.264 and AV1/H.265. These are platform recommendations, not universal rules or guarantees of visual quality.

| Output setting | H.264 recommendation | AV1/H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Source: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” (accessed 2026). Keep the codec columns distinct when configuring your encoder; the H.264 figures should not be treated as the recommendation for AV1 or H.265.
Which setting should you use?
Choose 1080p30 for detail without a need for 60 fps
Use 1080p30 when fine visual detail matters, 60 fps is not important for the material, and your connection and encoder have room to sustain the setting. It is often a reasonable choice for relatively measured footage, including documentary-style presentations, provided the stream remains stable.
Choose 1080p60 when motion smoothness matters and your setup can handle it
1080p60 combines more spatial detail with smoother motion, but it has the highest listed YouTube bitrate recommendation among these options for each codec, as well as a greater encoding demand than 1080p30. Consider it only if your sustained upload capacity and encoding system can manage it consistently.

Choose 720p60 when smooth motion matters more than extra detail
720p60 is a useful compromise when motion benefits from 60 fps but 1080p would push your bandwidth or encoding capacity too far. YouTube’s listed recommendation is 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265, the same as for 720p30.

720p30 can suit slower-paced or talk-focused streams when a lower encoding workload and a reliable broadcast are the priorities. These content-based suggestions are practical guidance, not fixed platform rules.
Configure the stream for YouTube
- Pick the resolution, frame rate and codec. In your encoder, select the output setting you intend to use. Match the bitrate recommendation to both the chosen frame rate and codec in the table above.
- Set a constant bitrate and keyframe interval. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Consider YouTube’s automatic settings. YouTube recommends letting Live Control Room automatically detect resolution and frame rate by default. Manual settings are available through a custom stream key.
- Test the upload path. Measure upload capacity under conditions similar to the event, rather than relying on the advertised download speed. YouTube specifically recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate.
- Run a representative test stream. Include the kind of movement and audio you expect in the real broadcast; static menus or a silent desktop may not reveal problems that appear during actual content.
- Watch stream health. Look for instability or dropped frames in platform indicators while the test is running. If the stream falters, lower the bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test again.
YouTube’s guidance is to choose a quality that produces a reliable stream for your internet connection. Use the official YouTube encoder settings guidance for current platform recommendations.

How Twitch’s guidance differs
Twitch’s surfaced broadcast guidance emphasizes balancing the game or content, internet speed and computer hardware: 1080p needs a higher bitrate, while higher frame rates require more encoding power. Its guidance favors lowering settings if your setup cannot sustain them. Do not assume YouTube’s bitrate table applies to Twitch; an exact current Twitch bitrate table is not established here.
Twitch’s surfaced FAQ says upload speed should generally be the configured bitrate plus 30%. Treat this as Twitch’s stated guideline, not a universal safety margin for every platform or connection. Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting can automatically configure resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec and encoder; its surfaced documentation identifies 1920×1080 or 1280×720 at 60 fps as preferred matching base/scaled settings for performance and GPU use.

Test before going live
- Test sustained upload capacity close to the time and network conditions of the event.
- Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and platform-specific bitrate.
- Include representative movement and audio in the test.
- Monitor platform stream-health indicators for instability or dropped frames.
- If the stream struggles, reduce settings and repeat the test; use the setting that proves reliable.
Troubleshooting a stream that stutters or drops frames
The stream is unstable or the platform reports connection trouble
Your upload path may not sustain the configured bitrate. Test upload capacity and reduce bitrate or resolution, then run another representative test. A faster advertised download plan alone does not establish that the upload stream is stable.
The encoder drops frames or the computer struggles
The system may not be keeping up with the encoding workload, particularly at a higher frame rate or resolution. Lower the frame rate or resolution and test again; Twitch likewise identifies higher frame rates as requiring more encoding power.
The picture looks soft despite using 1080p
Resolution is only one part of perceived quality. Review whether the chosen codec’s recommended bitrate is configured, and consider the amount of motion and detail in the scene and the encoder’s performance. Fast motion, detailed scenes and overlays can be harder to represent cleanly at a given bitrate; these are practical production considerations, not additional platform-published bitrate rules.

Some viewers see lower quality than your encoder output
YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers across devices and networks. Your encoder’s ingest bitrate describes what you send to YouTube, not the exact quality or bitrate every viewer receives.
