To turn a live stream into a pay-per-view (PPV) event, you need both a live broadcast and a paid-access product that lets buyers watch it. On Vimeo OTT, the documented workflow is to create the live event, create a transactional Buy/Rent product, attach the event in the product’s Content settings, and set the product to Ready for Sale. Then rehearse the broadcast and checkout, tell buyers when and how to watch, and decide in advance whether they will get replay access.
Choose a platform that supports paid live access
Before building the event, confirm that the exact service and account can sell one-time access to a live broadcast. Check creator eligibility, audience availability by region, how buyers sign in and watch, and the provider’s payment, payout, refund, and tax terms. These details vary by service and are not established by the Vimeo workflow described here.
Vimeo OTT is a documented example, not a universal recommendation. Its live-event creation guidance says live streaming requires an OTT Enterprise plan with live streaming enabled and a Premium, Advanced, or Enterprise Vimeo.com account. A separate Vimeo live-event FAQ describes Advanced or Premium or Enterprise with Events added. Check the customer journey, not just the feature list
- Can the creator sell a one-time ticket to this live event, rather than only ads or subscriptions?
- Can intended viewers purchase and watch from their location and preferred device?
- Does the product require a buyer account, and how is the viewing link delivered?
- When do sales open, and must a preorder be manually released?
- Does the original purchase include a replay, and for how long?
- Can live-event and replay distribution rules differ?
- What are the current fees, payout timing, refund policy, tax handling, and support options?
YouTube’s viewer help describes buying tickets to selected PPV events and says selected events can currently be purchased and watched in the US. It explains that viewers sign in, buy a ticket, and receive an email with the viewing link. That viewer guidance does not establish that every creator can publish a PPV event or explain creator-side eligibility; verify availability in official creator documentation before treating YouTube as your ticketing platform. Set up a Vimeo OTT PPV event
On Vimeo OTT, connect the broadcast event to a transactional product so the event receives the video feed and the product grants paid access. Vimeo’s documented steps are:
- Create the live event. Configure its title, description, thumbnail, and stream method. Vimeo OTT supports sending an RTMP feed from an encoder using the event’s server URL and stream key, or using its web-based studio option. See Vimeo’s setup instructions.
- Create a Buy/Rent transactional product. In the product setup, open the Content tab and select the live event you created. Vimeo says PPV cannot be enabled for Rentals, so do not choose the Rental option for a PPV product. Vimeo’s live PPV product guidance
- Set the product to Ready for Sale when you want customers to be able to buy it. If you set up a preorder, do not assume it will automatically become available when the broadcast starts; Vimeo says the seller must release it.
- Set the event’s sales window and customer messaging. Make clear when the stream begins, whether buyers should arrive early, and where they will watch. If you send start notifications, Vimeo recommends going live several minutes before the advertised start and using a “starting soon” slate while viewers arrive.
- Review distribution settings. Check who can access both the live event and its eventual VOD. Vimeo OTT allows live-event and VOD distribution settings to be configured separately, including custom VOD distribution rules.
Prepare the video feed and rehearse
The basic signal path is camera or video source → encoder or web studio → platform event → paying customer. For Vimeo’s RTMP workflow, copy the event’s server URL and stream key into an encoder. Vimeo names OBS, Wirecast, XSplit, and Livestream Studio as encoder examples. You need a reliable internet connection and a camera connected to a supported encoder for the camera-based workflow. Keep equipment proportional to the production
A webcam and a simple encoder workflow may be enough for a single-camera event. A USB HDMI capture card is only a possible input accessory if an HDMI camera or other HDMI source needs to feed a computer-based encoder; it is not stated as a Vimeo requirement. Check the camera’s output, computer inputs, and encoder compatibility before buying one.
Test both the broadcast and the purchase
- Rehearse the complete video path early, then repeat the test close to the event. Check that the platform receives a stable feed and use its stream-health monitoring where available.
- Preview the product as a customer would: confirm it is visible for sale, complete a test purchase if your platform provides a safe test method, and verify the buyer can access the event after signing in.
- Confirm the stream key and server URL are entered correctly in the encoder, and that the event is receiving the intended source.
- Test customer instructions, start notifications, chat or other interactive features you plan to use, and the fallback message in case the start is delayed.

Decide what ticket holders can watch after the event
Plan the archive before going live. On Vimeo OTT, ending the broadcast begins transcoding the event into VOD. Once transcoding is complete, the VOD replaces the live event in the Buy/Rent product unless you remove it. You can configure VOD distribution separately, so check whether replay access should use different plans, collections, categories, products, or regions from the live event. Vimeo recommends leaving the VOD available for at least 24 hours so ticket holders who had technical difficulties still have a chance to watch. That is Vimeo’s recommendation, not a universal replay rule; tell buyers the actual replay availability for your product.

Choose the right paid-access model
A single scheduled broadcast usually fits a one-time PPV offer. If viewers should pay for an ongoing library, a subscription model may make more sense; if the goal is audience-building, a free event may be appropriate. Vimeo OTT also describes advertising-based video (AVOD), free video (FVOD), transactional purchases or rentals (TVOD), and subscriptions (SVOD). Availability depends on the product and account: Vimeo describes AVOD as Enterprise-only and says it requires Google Ad Manager; some ad placements require Google Ad Manager 360. - The product cannot be purchased. Check that the event is attached to the Buy/Rent product and that the product is Ready for Sale. For a preorder, release it manually when sales should begin.
- The event is live, but a buyer cannot watch. Verify the buyer is signed in to the expected account, has completed purchase, and is using the correct event or viewing link. Check event distribution rules and regional availability.
- The platform receives no video feed. Recheck the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm the selected source, and inspect the platform’s stream-health status. Rehearse this path before the event rather than waiting until doors open.
- Some customers miss the live broadcast. Follow the replay policy you communicated. If you offer an archive, allow time for VOD transcoding and verify that its distribution settings and product attachment are correct.
- Buyers are unsure when to tune in. State the advertised start time and viewing instructions clearly. If using start notifications, Vimeo advises starting several minutes early with a “starting soon” slate.
