Start with one controllable light in front of you, near or just above eye level, and judge the result in your camera preview. A well-placed, softened key light is usually a better first step than buying a multi-light kit. Match its color to the room, then add fill or background lighting only to solve a specific problem.
Build a simple streaming-light setup
Your key light is the main source illuminating your face. You can begin with daylight, a controllable lamp you already own, or a dedicated LED light; first see what you can achieve before deciding to buy equipment.
- Frame your shot. Sit where you expect to stream and note where a light can sit without appearing in frame or getting in your way.
- Place the key light in front of you. Position it near or just above eye level and angle it downward. Elgato’s setup guide for its Key Light recommends placing that specific light directly in front, just above eyeline, and angled down approximately 30 degrees. Treat this as a useful starting point, not a universal rule for every room or light. Elgato’s Key Light setup guide
- Adjust its distance and output in the camera preview. Bring it close enough to illuminate your face evenly, but keep it comfortable and avoid an image that looks too bright. There is no universal distance or brightness target established for every camera, room, and framing.
- Set a consistent color. Choose a light setting that blends with the room’s other light sources. If a window and overhead lamp cast noticeably different colors, control one source if practical or adjust your key light to suit the remaining light.
- Check the camera image. Adjust exposure and white balance in your camera or streaming software. If your face looks too bright, dim, orange, blue, or shadowy, change one thing at a time and check the preview again.
What color temperature should you use?
Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K): lower values look warmer and higher values look cooler or bluer. No single number is right for every room and camera. The practical goal is a consistent-looking face and natural-looking colors in the image your audience sees.

White balance is the camera’s interpretation of the color of the light, so whites and other colors appear natural. A steady light source can make it easier to keep a consistent image, but auto white balance varies by camera. If the image shifts color as you move or as daylight changes, check the camera’s white-balance setting and the other light sources in the room.
Understand brightness, CRI, and softness
Lighting specifications describe different things. Compare them against your setup rather than treating one number as a guarantee of a flattering image.

- Brightness or output: Lumens describe how much light a product can produce. More output may help when the light is farther away or needs to cover a larger area, but an output figure by itself does not tell you how the light will look on your face at your intended distance.
- Color rendering (CRI): CRI indicates how accurately a light shows colors. Elgato says CRI above 90 is generally good for camera use and above 94 is a stronger target. These are the vendor’s guidelines, not a universal requirement or an independently established threshold. Elgato’s CRI explainer
- Diffusion and softness: A larger or diffused source generally spreads light more softly. Look at the effect in your preview; this guidance does not establish a quantified advantage for any particular size or diffuser.
When to add a second light
Add fill only if shadows are too strong
If the key light leaves one side of your face much darker than the other, a weaker fill source can soften the contrast. Elgato’s Key Light setup guide suggests two lights at 45-degree angles on either side for its two-light arrangement. Your room and framing may call for different positions. You can also try bouncing light from a nearby pale surface, if one is available, and compare the result on camera.
Use a background light for a deliberate effect
A background light is an optional creative choice, not a requirement for a beginner’s setup. Consider one only after your face is lit the way you want, and use it to create a deliberate background treatment or separation.

Choose a light that suits your space
There is no universally best model or established brightness threshold for every streamer. Compare candidate lights by what matters in your room and for your framing:
- Usable output at the distance you can place it, for the area you need to illuminate.
- Size and diffusion, and the softness you see in the camera preview.
- Adjustable color temperature, so you can match or control the room’s light.
- Published CRI information, if accurate color matters to your work.
- Mounting options, such as a desk clamp, monitor mount, or stand, and whether they fit your setup.
- Footprint and available desk space.
- How the controls work, including any app or network setup involved.
- What the kit includes and whether the product is currently available in your region.
For a concrete example, Elgato’s product page lists its Key Light with adjustable output up to 2,800 lumens, adjustable color temperature from 2,900–7,000 K, CRI above 92%, desk-clamp mounting, and desktop or mobile app control. Those are specifications for that product, not requirements for a beginner or a claim that it is the best choice for everyone. Check the current details and regional availability before buying.
