What was reported about Jerry Butler’s death?
The Associated Press reported that Butler died at home in Chicago on February 20, 2025, at age 85. His niece, Yolanda Goff, identified Parkinson’s disease as the cause of death. Neither the AP report nor the second AP obituary summarized by The Washington Post provides a diagnosis date or a detailed medical timeline. The announcement therefore confirms the reported cause, but does not establish when the disease was diagnosed.
PBS NewsHour’s AP report covered both Butler’s music and his public service.
Why was Jerry Butler important to soul music?
His breakthrough with the Impressions
Butler first came to prominence as an early lead singer of the Impressions. He sang lead on “For Your Precious Love,” recorded for Vee-Jay in 1958. The record’s promotion credited it to Jerry Butler and the Impressions, and accounts describe tensions around that credit as one factor in his eventual move toward a solo career.

A solo career across soul eras
Butler went on to record songs including “He Will Break Your Heart,” “Make It Easy on Yourself,” “Moon River” and “Only the Strong Survive.” His work with Philadelphia writers and producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff connected him to a later phase of soul music; “Only the Strong Survive” became his signature hit. His recordings and collaborations linked him with both Chicago soul and the Philadelphia soul sound.
“Iceman,” the nickname by which Butler was widely known, reflected his understated performance style, according to the AP account. Rather than relying on overt theatricality, he made restraint part of his musical identity.

What is known—and not known—about his diagnosis?
The reporting reviewed here attributes the cause of death to Parkinson’s disease through Butler’s niece. It does not give a date for his diagnosis, describe his symptoms or treatment, or document a fuller medical history. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that he was diagnosed shortly before his death or to assign a diagnosis year based on these reports.
