For a YouTube live stream, add chapters after the archive is available: open it in YouTube Studio, edit its description, add timestamp-and-title lines, and save. Start with 00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Check the playback afterward to confirm the divisions appear.
Check that the live stream was archived
Chapter editing requires an archived video. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. After the broadcast, look in YouTube Studio under Content > Live and open the stream’s details to check its archive and visibility. Add chapters to a YouTube archive
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and select the archived stream.
- Edit the video description and add one timestamp and chapter title per line. The first timestamp must be
00:00; provide at least three timestamps in ascending order, with at least 10 seconds between chapter starts. - Save the description, then check the public or preview playback. Confirm that the chapter labels and boundaries appear where you intended. YouTube Help: Video chapters
For example, if these times match the actual archive, the description could include:

18:10 Questions and answersThe times above are illustrative; find the real boundaries in your recording rather than copying them. The description is the documented input for manual chapters. A manual timestamp list overrides automatic chapters.

If chapters do not appear
- Check that the list starts at
00:00, has at least three timestamp lines, uses ascending times, and leaves at least 10 seconds between starts. - Confirm that the description was saved and recheck the video playback.
- Chapter availability can depend on feature access and video eligibility. YouTube says channels without access can apply for advanced features. Automatic chapters are optional and may be unavailable on some videos, including when the channel has active strikes or the content is deemed inappropriate for some viewers. Find accurate chapter timestamps
Play the archive and note the time at which each meaningful segment begins. If you inserted stream markers while live, YouTube may show them on the timeline when you create a highlight. Markers can help you locate moments, but the documented chapter method is still to transfer the intended times into the description and verify them in playback. Twitch VODs
Enable Past Broadcasts in Twitch stream settings if you want broadcasts saved. Twitch creates its VOD chapter points from category changes made during the live stream; the cited guidance does not describe a post-stream editor for adding a custom timestamp list. Twitch’s category-change markers are not equivalent to manually authored chapter titles. If you need custom navigable sections and the broadcast did not include suitable category changes, keep an archive on a service that supports manual timestamps or make a separately edited version.
Vimeo archived live events
Vimeo’s automatic chapter suggestions can apply to archived live events, Zoom uploads, and Vimeo Record videos on an Enterprise plan. For an eligible archive in English with at least 300 words, wait for transcription to finish, then open the video’s Interactive tab and choose Chapters. Edit suggested titles or timestamps as needed and select Apply; you can also add chapters manually. Vimeo notes that OTT platforms do not support automatically suggested chapters, so confirm that the destination supports the chapter data you need. Vimeo Help: How to add chapters to your video
