To monitor a 24/7 YouTube live stream automatically, poll the YouTube Live Streaming API for the incoming stream’s status and health, then apply your own alert rules. Check the separate broadcast resource too if you need to know whether the viewer-facing event is live. YouTube supplies machine-readable signals; you must provide the scheduled check, alert delivery, logging, and any recovery action.
What to monitor: the incoming stream and the broadcast
YouTube represents the incoming audio-video feed and the event viewers watch as separate resources. A liveStream describes the feed sent to YouTube; a liveBroadcast describes the broadcast. Monitoring only one may miss a problem with the other, so check both when your goal is to keep a channel live end to end. See Google’s Live Streaming API overview and LiveBroadcasts reference.
Choose manual checks or unattended alerts
| Approach | What it provides | What you need to supply |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room | Stream health and status messages, plus real-time metrics such as concurrent viewers and duration while streaming. | An operator watching the dashboard. The reviewed YouTube Help page documents dashboard information, not custom unattended alerts. YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics. |
| API polling with an alert route | Machine-readable stream status and health that can drive unattended checks. | Account authorization, a scheduled process, alert delivery, thresholds, and logging. YouTube does not prescribe a polling interval or outage threshold. |
Build an automatic monitor with the YouTube API
1. Identify the channel’s stream resource
Use the account-authorized YouTube Live Streaming API to find the liveStream associated with the broadcast you intend to monitor. Keep the stream ID and broadcast ID distinct: they refer to different resources. The API overview explains this relationship, and Google’s LiveStreams: list reference documents how to retrieve stream resources.
2. Request the status part
Call liveStreams.list for the relevant stream and request the status part. Make the request under an authorized account context that can access the channel’s live resources. The method reference lists authorization failures, including liveStreamingNotEnabled where applicable; resolve account access or channel eligibility before treating a failed request as a stream outage.

3. Evaluate status and health separately
Google defines status.streamStatus=active as the user “receiving data via the stream.” That confirms YouTube is receiving feed data, not that the video is healthy in every respect or that the broadcast lifecycle is in the desired state. Inspect status.healthStatus, lastUpdateTimeSeconds, and configurationIssues as well. Health issue records can include severity, reason, and description; documented examples include low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio, and video ingestion starvation. Pass the actual issue detail to the operator rather than reducing every condition to “offline.” See Google’s LiveStreams reference.
| API signal | Meaning | Practical monitor response |
|---|---|---|
streamStatus=active |
YouTube says it is receiving data via the stream. | Keep checking health and the broadcast lifecycle. |
streamStatus=inactive |
YouTube is not receiving stream data. | Alert if the channel is expected to be live. |
streamStatus=error |
An error condition exists on the stream. | Alert with available issue details. |
healthStatus.status=good |
No configuration issue has warning severity or worse. | Classify as healthy under YouTube’s documented definition and continue checks. |
healthStatus.status=ok |
No configuration issue has error severity. | Inspect issues: warnings may still be present. |
healthStatus.status=bad |
At least one configuration issue has error severity. | Escalate with the issue severity, reason, and description. |
healthStatus.status=noData |
YouTube’s live streaming backend has no information about the stream’s health status. | Treat as unknown and retry; do not classify it as healthy. |
4. Define alert conditions and guard against transient readings
Choose a recurring check interval and a persistence window that suit your availability needs. For example, alert after repeated observations of inactive or error, on bad health, or when health remains noData beyond your chosen tolerance. A retry or persistence rule helps avoid paging on one transient observation. These are operator choices, not YouTube-prescribed timings; no universal interval or outage threshold is established by the API documentation.

5. Log observations and notify a responsible person
Store timestamped results, including stream and broadcast state, health status, lastUpdateTimeSeconds, and each configuration issue’s type, severity, reason, and description. Route alerts through the email, messaging, or incident system you operate, and include enough context to distinguish a missing feed from degraded health or an API authorization failure.
6. Check the broadcast lifecycle independently
Inspect the liveBroadcast resource when viewer-facing event state matters. Its lifecycle status and settings, including enableAutoStart and enableAutoStop, affect broadcast behavior but do not replace checks of incoming stream health. Consult Google’s LiveBroadcasts reference.

Monitoring is not the same as automatic recovery
An alert tells you that a condition needs attention; restarting an encoder or changing broadcast state is a separate action with separate failure modes. Google’s API overview describes authorized lifecycle operations, but the API status documentation does not establish a universally safe automatic restart method for OBS or another encoder.
If you choose to automate recovery, use a controlled service supervisor or equivalent mechanism, log every attempt, cap retries, and notify a human if recovery fails. Do not let a monitor repeatedly restart a healthy encoder because of a single stale or unknown reading. Test the behavior against your own stream and authorization setup before relying on it unattended.

Common monitoring failures and how to handle them
- The API request is denied: Check the authorization context and channel access. If the response indicates
liveStreamingNotEnabled, verify that live streaming is enabled for the relevant channel before diagnosing the feed. - The monitor reports offline on one check: Retry or apply a persistence window before paging. A single transient observation is not enough to establish a sustained outage.
- The stream is active but viewers report a problem: Review health status and configuration issues, then check the broadcast lifecycle.
activemeans YouTube is receiving feed data; it is not a complete health verdict. - Health status is
noData: Treat it as unknown, retry, and alert if it persists beyond the tolerance you selected. YouTube explicitly definesnoDataas absence of health information, not a healthy status. - An alert says only “bad” or “error”: Include the API’s issue severity, reason, and description in the notification so the operator has a useful diagnostic rather than a generic alarm.
- Alerts arrive but do not lead to recovery: Confirm the notification route reaches an on-call person and document who owns investigation. Monitoring does not itself restore an encoder, network, or broadcast.
Keep the broadcast running from the cloud
For a pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos looping from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is an alternative to operating a computer-based streaming setup—not a substitute for checking YouTube’s API status if you need custom monitoring and alerts.
StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. The available billing terms are:
