To set up an RTMP live stream, create or select a broadcast on your streaming platform, copy its current ingest server URL and stream key into an encoder such as OBS Studio, configure video and audio output to match the platform’s guidance and your upload connection, then test the whole chain before broadcasting. The exact server address, protocol and stream key depend on the destination; do not reuse one platform’s settings for another.
What you need before setting up RTMP
- A destination account and a live broadcast or event that is ready to receive an encoder feed.
- An encoder, such as OBS Studio, to combine and transmit your picture and sound.
- The destination’s current ingest server URL and stream key.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the output you choose, plus a computer that can encode your scene.
- Any input devices required for your scene. A webcam, capture card or microphone may be useful, but none is required for a screen-only stream.
RTMP is the connection mechanism between the encoder and destination, not a complete broadcast setup by itself. The destination authorizes the encoder with a stream key; the encoder supplies the audio and video.
How to set up an RTMP stream in OBS
1. Prepare the destination broadcast
In the destination’s live dashboard, create or select the broadcast workflow and locate its encoder or streaming setup. The destination provides the current server URL and key. For YouTube’s current RTMP setup guidance, see YouTube Help. Twitch also documents its stream-key and encoder authorization workflow in its stream key FAQ.
2. Copy the server URL and protect the key
The ingest URL tells OBS where to send data; the stream key identifies and authorizes your stream with the destination. Enter the pair from the same broadcast setup screen. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, display it on stream, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in the platform dashboard and update OBS with the replacement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Connect OBS to the destination
In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose the destination’s built-in service when it is available, then sign in or enter the requested key. If you need a supplied endpoint, choose the custom service option, then enter the server URL and stream key exactly as shown by the platform. OBS describes these service, server and key fields in its overview guide.
For YouTube, use RTMPS when the encoder and selected endpoint support it. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP recommended in YouTube’s setup guidance. Other destinations may use different endpoints, protocols or ports, so follow their current instructions rather than copying a YouTube URL into another service.

4. Build the scene and check audio
In the OBS Sources panel, add the inputs your broadcast needs. A screen or window capture works for presentations and demonstrations; game capture, a webcam, a media source or capture card can be added when appropriate. Add a microphone or other audio source, then speak or play sound and confirm the relevant meters move. See OBS’s Quick Start Guide and Sources Guide for source setup details.
5. Set output to suit the destination and your connection
In Settings → Output and Settings → Video, configure the encoder, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate and keyframe interval according to the destination’s current encoder requirements. There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every platform, connection and computer. YouTube publishes its current recommended values on its encoder settings page; OBS notes that bitrate must account for both upload capacity and destination constraints in its overview.

Choose an output your connection can sustain continuously, leaving room for normal network variation and other household or office traffic. Higher resolution and frame rate generally increase encoding and upload demands. Computer load also depends on encoder choice and scene complexity; OBS cautions that meeting basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming performance. Consult its system requirements and use the Auto-Configuration Wizard if you need a starting point.
6. Test before the public broadcast
Start a short test or recording, check the destination’s preview or connection status, and verify picture, sound and motion. Watch OBS for encoder overload or dropped frames. OBS’s Quick Start Guide, dated 2021-08-25, specifically encourages running a test for a few minutes before the first stream or recording.

RTMP or RTMPS?
RTMPS adds a secure connection layer to RTMP. YouTube supports RTMPS and recommends it when available. Google’s technical guidance notes that SSL errors and timeouts can result from an incorrect server name, port or SSL configuration, including trying cleartext RTMP where RTMPS is expected: Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Use the endpoint and protocol shown in the destination’s current live setup. In OBS, the built-in platform preset is convenient when it provides the correct destination configuration. A custom server setting is useful when the platform or streaming provider supplies a non-default endpoint. Do not assume that endpoints, ports or protocol requirements are interchangeable across services.

Common RTMP problems and fixes
OBS will not connect, or the destination has no preview
- Confirm the destination is expecting an encoder feed and the correct broadcast is selected.
- Check that the server URL and stream key belong together and were copied without extra spaces or missing characters.
- If the key was reset, replace the old key in OBS.
- Verify the protocol and port against the destination’s current settings. For YouTube RTMPS, check server name, port and SSL configuration as described in Google’s ingestion guide.
The video works but there is no sound
Check which desktop and microphone devices OBS is using, then watch their audio meters while producing sound. Confirm that the intended sources are not muted and that the selected audio device is available. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers checking audio levels.
The stream stutters or OBS reports dropped frames or overload
Separate network trouble from encoding or computer load. If the encoder is overloaded, reduce output demands or scene complexity and consider the Auto-Configuration Wizard. If upload capacity is the issue, lower the stream’s bitrate or resolution and retest. OBS explains that performance depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity in its system requirements; its overview guide also notes the role of upload speed and destination limits.
A camera or external video source is missing
Check that the correct device is selected and that the device supports the operating-system path OBS needs. Confirm its resolution and frame rate settings. For device-specific guidance, use OBS’s Video Capture Sources and webcam FAQ.
Copyright and the content you broadcast
Having a working RTMP connection does not grant permission to broadcast the material in your scene. Before streaming music, video, footage or other protected work, make sure you have the necessary rights or a license that covers live streaming on your destination. Also review the destination’s current rules for live content and monetization; those policies are separate from encoder configuration.
