Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. It is a protocol for sending timed audio, video, and data messages between communicating peers over a reliable transport such as TCP. In a live-streaming setup, RTMP most often refers to the connection that carries a stream from an encoder to an ingest server—not the codec that compresses the video or the format a viewer necessarily watches.
What RTMP does—and what it does not
RTMP defines how timed media and data messages are exchanged. It is not a camera, streaming application, video codec, or complete end-to-end delivery system. The protocol does not itself encode or compress the picture or sound; codecs and higher-level applications determine how media payloads are represented and interpreted.
Adobe’s 2012 specification describes RTMP as providing “a bidirectional message multiplex service over a reliable stream transport, such as TCP,” for parallel video, audio, and data messages with timing information. The specification was edited by H. Parmar and M. Thornburgh (Adobe RTMP Specification).
How RTMP carries a stream
An RTMP connection begins with a handshake. After that, RTMP Chunk Stream breaks messages into chunks and carries them with information such as timestamps, message length, message type, and message-stream identifier. The message payload may contain audio, compressed video, or other data. Chunking and multiplexing let messages for different media streams travel over the same connection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is the protocol layer, not the media encoding layer: RTMP transports messages, while the payload format and codec determine how the receiving application interprets the media.
Where RTMP fits in live streaming
A typical live workflow has an encoder send a contribution stream to a service’s ingest server. RTMP is one protocol that may be used for this sender-to-server leg. The service can then process and deliver the stream to viewers through a separate playback workflow. So a platform accepting RTMP ingest does not mean viewers receive RTMP, and the protocol name alone does not tell you the stream’s codec, quality, or playback method.

RTMP is historically associated with Adobe and Flash, but it remains a term used in media-streaming products and workflows. A 2024 memo by Michael Thornburgh notes both continued use and errors, omissions, and ambiguities in Adobe’s December 2012 specification (RTMP Errata and Addenda). That is evidence of continued use as of the memo’s publication, not a guarantee that a particular service accepts RTMP today. Check the destination’s current ingest documentation.
RTMP compared with HLS, WebRTC, and SRT
These names describe different protocol roles or workflows; they are not interchangeable labels for “live video.” The comparison below is limited to what the cited specifications and discussion establish.

| Option | Role | Useful question when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Bidirectional media-message multiplexing over a reliable stream transport such as TCP. | Does the encoder and ingest server support it? |
| HLS | Media delivery organized through playlists and segments; a master playlist can describe variant streams for different encodings. | Does the workflow need playlist-and-segment delivery or alternative encodings? |
| WebRTC | An interactive real-time communication framework whose required media transport is RTP, with RTCP also required and used. | Do the endpoints and signaling support the interactive use case? |
| SRT | Listed among OBS output options in an OBS Project discussion; that discussion identified it as closest to the low-latency needs raised there. | Do both ends support it, and does it suit the network and service requirements? |
HLS details are described in the HTTP Live Streaming specification (RFC 8216); WebRTC’s media-transport requirements are in the WebRTC specification (RFC 8834). OBS’s protocol discussion is context-specific, not a definitive compatibility list for every current version or destination (OBS Project discussion).
Choose according to the sender, ingest service, and viewer clients that must interoperate, plus whether the goal is contribution to a platform, broad playback delivery, or interactive communication. There is no universal best protocol, and the cited sources do not establish a current service-by-service compatibility matrix.

What to check before using RTMP
- Confirm the destination currently accepts RTMP ingest; support can vary by service and configuration.
- Use the server address and stream credentials provided by that destination. A protocol name by itself does not supply a usable ingest endpoint.
- Check that the encoder’s media formats and settings meet the destination’s current requirements. RTMP does not specify a single codec or picture quality.
- Keep the ingest connection distinct from viewer playback: the platform may use another protocol or delivery format after receiving the contribution stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live around the clock, RTMP is only one part of the delivery chain. StreamNeo lets you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
