Contribution carries live video from a source—such as a camera, venue, or remote production—to a production facility or platform ingest point. Delivery carries a prepared stream from an origin or content-delivery network (CDN) to viewers. They describe different jobs in a workflow, not two mutually exclusive families of protocols: systems can accept one format and deliver another.

Where contribution and delivery sit in a live-video workflow

A simplified workflow looks like this:

  1. Capture and encode: Cameras, microphones, or a production system create the source feed and encode it.
  2. Contribute: The feed travels to a receiving facility, production system, or cloud/platform ingest point. Transport choices include RTMP, RTP, SRT, RIST, and Zixi.
  3. Prepare and package: The receiving system may process the feed and create one or more outputs suited to distribution. Gateways can also convert between input and output formats.
  4. Deliver: An origin or CDN sends streams to viewer devices, commonly using HTTP-based HLS or MPEG-DASH.

Real deployments can combine or rearrange these stages. A protocol name alone does not tell you the entire route, whether a platform accepts it, or how much delay a viewer will experience.

Contribution protocols: getting the source feed there

Contribution protocols are selected for the link from a source or production environment to a receiving system. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers Video Technology Alliance (SVTA) identifies RTMP, RTP, SRT, RIST, and Zixi among the options used for this work. They differ in compatibility, resilience, latency goals, and operational requirements; there is no universally best choice for every network and platform.

RTMP and RTP

RTMP and RTP are among the established contribution options. Their suitability depends on the encoder and receiver, the network path, and the destination’s ingest support. Do not assume that a protocol’s presence in a general list means a particular service accepts it.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

SRT and RIST

SRT and RIST are also used to transport contribution feeds, including over networks where packet loss or variable conditions matter. Haivision describes SRT as a transport protocol for low-latency live audio and video and notes its use at contribution and distribution endpoints. “Low latency” is a design goal, not a guarantee of a fixed viewer delay: encoding, buffering, the network path, packaging, and playback all contribute to end-to-end latency.

Zixi

Zixi illustrates how a vendor platform can span more than one stage: its documentation describes network-aware error correction for transport and outputs that include HLS and MPEG-DASH. That is a vendor description of its capabilities, not an independent, controlled comparison showing that it outperforms other options.

Delivery protocols: distributing streams to viewers

HLS and MPEG-DASH are common HTTP-based adaptive streaming approaches for delivery. They can serve viewers across internet infrastructure and device types, with playback systems selecting among available stream representations as conditions change. Delivery is not synonymous with video on demand (VOD): MPEG’s standards overview says DASH supports both on-demand and live streaming. Live deployments can also use low-latency variants, so the protocol label alone does not establish how delayed playback will be.

At this stage, scale and playback compatibility matter. A contribution feed usually needs to reach a receiver or ingest endpoint; delivery must reach many viewer devices, often through CDN infrastructure. These are different distribution problems even when a technology or vendor participates in both.

Why the boundaries are not strict protocol categories

Contribution and delivery identify a protocol’s role in a particular workflow, not an exclusive classification. YouTube Live, for example, documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as supported ingest protocols. That is a service-specific acceptance list, not a rule that every platform accepts those protocols or that they have the same role everywhere.

Likewise, a gateway may receive a contribution format and output HLS or DASH for delivery. Zixi’s documented transport and output capabilities are one illustration. When planning a workflow, check the actual encoder, receiver, platform ingest, and playback requirements at each handoff rather than choosing by protocol name alone.

How to choose for a real deployment

Start with the full path and its constraints. A protocol’s advertised transport characteristics cannot, by themselves, settle whether a system will work for the source, destination, audience, and network you have.

  • Total glass-to-glass latency: Set a target for the time from capture to viewer playback. Include encoding, buffering, transport, packaging, CDN delivery, and the player—not just the contribution leg.
  • Network resilience: Determine how the contribution link behaves under packet loss and changing network conditions, and what recovery or error-correction mechanisms are available.
  • Compatibility: Verify support across the encoder, any receiver or gateway, the platform’s ingest options, and intended playback devices.
  • Scale and CDN integration: Consider whether the system must carry one feed to a production destination or deliver to a large, geographically distributed audience.
  • Security: Check the security requirements for each connection and stage; do not treat one protocol choice as proof that the whole workflow is secure.
  • Operations and cost: Account for equipment or service requirements, configuration, monitoring, recovery procedures, and the complexity of maintaining the complete path.

Available source descriptions establish that protocols and platforms differ in features and stage, but they do not provide controlled, comparable benchmarks for every protocol. Treat performance as deployment-specific and validate it against your own network and endpoints.

What the 2024 SRT and RTMP figures mean

Haivision’s Broadcast Transformation Report 2024 reported that 58% of survey respondents used SRT for low-latency video transport; in its discussion of contribution protocols, it also reported RTMP use by 56% and UDP use by 45%. These are survey results from that report—not a census of the streaming industry and not a 2026 market-share estimate. The percentages describe reported use, not a controlled ranking of protocol quality.

Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it is not a contribution or delivery protocol, and it does not go live from a camera. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start the stream. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. This is a different problem from selecting protocols for a camera-to-platform production workflow.

For a prerecorded YouTube stream that should keep running, the workflow is upload the video, add the stream key, and go live. The stream continues from the cloud; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo plans for the applicable price in your region. Start a free StreamNeo day.
