To set up a live stream in Wowza Streaming Engine, choose a live application, configure a compatible camera or encoder with that application’s connection details, publish, then confirm the source is active in Streaming Engine Manager and test playback. The exact server address, application name, stream name, protocol, credentials and open ports depend on your installation and network; there is no universal stream URL.
What Streaming Engine Manager does
Streaming Engine Manager is the browser interface for managing a Wowza Streaming Engine server, its applications and status. Its Server tab covers server and virtual-host settings; Applications is where you manage live and video-on-demand applications. The homepage provides connection counts, resource-use information and application connection settings. Wowza’s Manager documentation describes these areas.
Before you begin
- Install Streaming Engine and confirm that the machine meets the system requirements for the version you intend to use. Wowza’s installation guide, updated July 24, 2026, includes version 4.12.0 installer examples; check Wowza for supported versions and licensing before downloading. Read the installation guide.
- Have administrative access to the server and the username and password created during installation.
- Choose a publishing source: a software encoder such as OBS, a camera, or another compatible encoder. A camera is optional; the source must support the protocol and connection settings required by your application.
- Plan the necessary firewall and network access for the protocols you will use. Do not open every listed port by default; select only what your deployment needs.
Choose the right live application
A live application is the server-side destination for a publishing source. Choose based on where the stream comes from and where it needs to go, rather than treating the application names as interchangeable.
| Application type | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Live Single server | A source publishes to one Streaming Engine server, which delivers the stream directly to players. This is the straightforward choice for a basic single-server setup. |
| Live Origin | The server acts as an origin that delivers streams to other Wowza servers. |
| Live Edge | The server ingests streams from an origin in an origin-to-edge distribution setup. |
| Live HTTP Origin | The stream is delivered to HTTP caching infrastructure. |
These application types serve different delivery architectures. If you are unsure which architecture your deployment needs, confirm it with the person responsible for the Wowza server before configuring an encoder. Wowza outlines live-application options in its live streaming configuration documentation.

Install, open Manager and check the server
- Install Streaming Engine. Follow Wowza’s installer instructions for your operating system, verify requirements and create the administrator credentials during setup. Version examples on the installation page are documentation examples, not a guarantee that a particular release is currently supported or licensed for your use.
- Check that the server responds. From a machine that can reach it, open
http://[wowza-ip-address]:1935/ServerVersion, replacing the bracketed address with the server’s actual IP address. A response helps confirm that the server is reachable on that address and port. - Open Manager. Visit
http://[wowza-ip-address]:8088/enginemanagerand sign in with the installation administrator credentials. Wowza documents these as default access patterns; your deployment may use different addresses or ports. - Handle remote access deliberately. Manager administration connections default to localhost. Reaching the server’s public IP alone does not configure remote Manager access or make it safe. Remote operation needs deployment-specific network and access configuration. See Wowza’s remote-connection guidance.
Configure the publishing source
Use the application’s actual connection details
In Manager, select or create the live application for your delivery setup. Configure your encoder or camera with the server address, application name, stream name or key, protocol and any required credentials shown for that application and deployment. The exact values vary. Do not copy a demo stream name or trial server address into a production configuration.
Encoder choice is about compatibility with the selected application and protocol, support for the required server, application and stream fields, and the ability to enter credentials. OBS is one software-encoder example, not a requirement. A camera or dedicated RTMP-capable encoder may also be appropriate if it supports the settings your application expects.

Set up source authentication when required
By default, RTMP- and RTSP-based encoders must provide source username and password credentials before publishing to a live application. In Manager, create or manage the account under Server > Source Authentication, then enter the matching values in the encoder. Credential values are case-sensitive, so check capitalization carefully. Wowza’s publisher-connection documentation covers this configuration.
Check ports and network access
Wowza lists these default ports, but the ports you need depend on the streaming and playback protocols enabled in your deployment. The ports cannot be shared with other services, and the required traffic must be allowed through relevant firewalls. Enterprise environments may require a network administrator; home and office setups may require router port forwarding. Consult Wowza’s installation guidance and your network administrator before changing firewall rules.

Publish and verify the stream
- Save the source settings. In your encoder, enter the deployment’s actual server, application and stream details, select a compatible protocol, and add the source credentials if required.
- Start publishing. Start the encoder’s stream or the camera’s publishing function. Starting the encoder alone does not prove that Streaming Engine has accepted the source.
- Check ingestion in Manager. Open Applications > your live application > Incoming Streams and look for the source with an Active status. Wowza’s OBS connection example demonstrates this check; its sample values are illustrative, so use your own connection details.
- Test playback. Use a player such as VLC with the playback address and protocol configured for your application. Wowza’s VLC playback tutorial walks through a local playback test. A successful source connection and a successful playback test check different parts of the path.
- Check server status if the problem is broader. Manager’s status area shows source and playback connections as well as CPU, Java heap, memory and disk usage. Use these indicators to help distinguish an ingestion problem from a server-capacity or playback issue; they do not by themselves identify every cause.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Manager does not open | Address, administration port, server reachability or remote-access configuration | Confirm the actual server IP and Manager port for your installation. If connecting remotely, check the deployment’s access and network configuration; Manager defaults to localhost. |
| The encoder cannot connect | Protocol mismatch, incorrect server or application details, or blocked network traffic | Compare the encoder settings with the details for the selected live application. Confirm that the required protocol’s ports are allowed through the applicable firewall and router. |
| Authentication fails | Missing source account or mismatched credentials | For RTMP or RTSP sources, verify the account under Server > Source Authentication and re-enter the matching case-sensitive username and password in the encoder. |
| The encoder says it is live, but Incoming Streams has no Active source | The source has not been accepted by the intended application | Check the application name, stream name or key, protocol, server address and credentials, then inspect Applications > your live application > Incoming Streams again. |
| The source is Active, but playback fails | Playback URL, player protocol or delivery configuration | Test with a playback address and protocol intended for the selected application. Check Manager’s playback connections and consult the application’s delivery configuration. |
| Connections work inconsistently or the server appears constrained | Network rules or server resources | Review relevant firewall and router rules, then use Manager’s connection and CPU, Java heap, memory and disk indicators to narrow down whether the issue concerns reachability or server resources. |
Copyright and what a successful test means
An Active source and successful playback show that a stream is being ingested and delivered; they do not establish that you have rights to broadcast its content. Use video, music and other material you own or are licensed to use, and check the permissions that apply to your content and audience. This guide does not establish licensing terms for any particular work.
