YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom; if a backup encoder sends at the same time, include its bitrate too. A speed test is only a snapshot, so confirm the full setup with a representative test stream, YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and a failover test before relying on it around the clock.
1. Work out how much upload bandwidth the stream needs
Use the bitrate for your live encoder settings—not the separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. YouTube’s current live guidance specifies different bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Selected H.264 examples are:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not internet-plan speeds that guarantee an uninterrupted stream. YouTube’s live settings table includes other codec and output combinations, so use the entry matching the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually selected: YouTube live encoder settings.
For the network check, calculate the minimum measured upload capacity you want available:

Required measured upload capacity ≈ (primary stream bitrate + any simultaneously sent backup bitrate) × 1.20.
YouTube recommends 20% spare capacity and says to account for the primary stream, backup stream, and headroom together. For example, a single 10 Mbps stream calls for about 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under this planning calculation. A concurrent backup also uses upstream bandwidth, so add its bitrate before applying the 20% factor. This is a planning floor, not a guarantee: other uploads, congestion, outages, Wi-Fi interference, or routing problems can still interrupt a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

2. Measure upload on the connection you will use
- Use the streaming computer and location. Run a speed test from the computer that will run the encoder, connected to the network path intended for the stream. Record the upload result; download speed alone does not tell you whether the outgoing stream has enough capacity.
- Test under realistic network use. Repeat at different times and when household or workplace devices are doing their usual online activities. YouTube notes that other people sharing the network may limit the capacity available to a stream, but it does not prescribe a particular number of tests or schedule.
- Prefer a wired connection for the encoder. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming. If you are currently on Wi-Fi, connect the computer to the router or switch by Ethernet and test again. A cable can improve the local link’s consistency, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet plan.
The reviewed official guidance does not set a universal latency, jitter, or packet-loss threshold for YouTube ingest. Judge the actual stream as well as the speed-test result.
3. Run a representative test stream
A reliable check uses the same computer, encoder settings, network, and type of audio and motion as the intended broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, checking the preview and stream health, and monitoring the event. Its live streaming setup guidance also advises checking that the stream is accessible on the channel/watch page and on mobile, and monitoring audio and video.

- High Stability: This portable internet hotspot guarantees network speed and stability, and does not rely on network cables.
- Design: This hotspot router is small in size and light in weight, connect your smart home without a network cable.
- Increase Coverage: This SIM card router uses 4G Internet access via SIM card. Increase coverage area and eliminate network dead angle.
- 8 to 10 Users: This 4G router supports 8 to 10 users at a time, suitable for home, office and travel, etc.
- Configure the encoder for the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube allows a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its ingest system. Confirm the current settings in its live encoder documentation.
- Start a test and check the preview, stream-health messages, audio, and video on the watch page. Test on mobile as well if viewers are likely to use it.
- Keep the test running long enough to observe the network during typical use and verify any local recording workflow. That duration is a practical operational choice, not a YouTube-published guarantee.
4. Test backup failover rather than assuming it works
A high speed-test result cannot show whether a backup encoder or connection will take over correctly. YouTube’s encoder tips advise testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that playback rolls over to the backup. Do this during a planned test, not during an important broadcast. Verify the player actually switches and that the backup is sending the intended stream.
If primary and backup encoders transmit concurrently, include both bitrates in the upload calculation. If they are configured for YouTube failover, check that the settings meet YouTube’s current requirements; having backup equipment is not evidence that failover is working. See YouTube encoder tips.

5. Diagnose dropped frames and stream interruptions
OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Use the encoder’s dropped-frame count alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages; the symptoms can help distinguish a network problem from an issue in the video or audio source. OBS’s troubleshooting page, dated 2024-09-30, lists network capacity and stability among the causes: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- Dropped frames rise while streaming: Compare the configured bitrate with upload capacity that remains available under real network use. Reduce competing uploads, or lower the stream bitrate and retest if the connection cannot sustain the current setting.
- Wi-Fi stream is inconsistent: Test over wired Ethernet. Wi-Fi can be unstable; OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming.
- The speed test looks adequate but frames still drop: Check for uploads from other devices, VPNs, security software, or network-optimization tools that may interfere. Review encoder logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- The connection remains unreliable: Check modem/router connectivity and network drivers. OBS lists outdated drivers and modem/router issues as possible causes.
- The encoder preview looks healthy but YouTube reports a poor feed: Follow YouTube’s stream troubleshooting steps, test outbound internet, and contact your ISP if the connection test identifies a problem.
6. Account for YouTube’s limits on very long streams
Network availability is only one part of operating a continuous stream. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all, even though shorter streams can be automatically archived. It recommends keeping a local archive backup: YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
