It can carry audio, video, and data between endpoints. Your application still needs to arrange how participants find one another and exchange connection details, and it may need servers to relay traffic or provide other service features.
What WebRTC is
WebRTC combines two related efforts: W3C specifications for browser-facing APIs and IETF specifications for the protocols that let compatible endpoints communicate. A browser application can use the APIs to access permitted devices and manage connections; an implementation can also use the protocols without exposing the browser JavaScript API. The endpoints need not all be browsers.
The IETF’s RFC 8825, a Standards Track document published in January 2021, describes the goal as enabling implementations to communicate using audio, video, and data along the most direct possible path between participants. “Most direct possible” does not guarantee a direct peer-to-peer route: a connection may be relayed or routed through service infrastructure.
How a WebRTC connection works
A typical browser call has two distinct paths. A signaling path carries setup and control information between the application and its participants. A media or data path carries the actual communication once connectivity is established. They can use different systems.

- The application arranges signaling. Participants must exchange session descriptions and connectivity candidates. WebRTC does not prescribe a particular signaling protocol or service.
- The browser obtains local media when needed. If the feature uses a microphone or camera, the page requests access through browser capture APIs. The user’s permission and the browser and operating system’s device support affect the result.
- The peers negotiate a session. The browser APIs coordinate tracks, session descriptions, and connection state. The application carries the offer-and-answer information between participants.
- ICE tests possible network paths. Each endpoint gathers candidates and checks whether candidate pairs can connect through intervening NATs and firewalls.
- Traffic uses the selected path. Media uses secure RTP with DTLS-SRTP key exchange. Data channels use SCTP over DTLS over ICE, as specified in RFC 8835.
Signaling is not the media stream. A signaling server can help participants establish a call without carrying the call’s audio or video; conversely, a service may deliberately route media through infrastructure for conferencing, recording, moderation, or scale.
What signaling does—and why WebRTC needs it
Signaling is the application’s method for helping participants discover one another and exchange the information needed to establish, manage, and control a connection. This includes session descriptions and ICE candidates. WebRTC specifies the communication mechanisms used after and during setup, but leaves the signaling design to the application.

An application might carry signaling over HTTPS, WebSockets, SIP, or another suitable system. The choice depends on its architecture and the clients it must support. WebSocket is a possible message channel, not a substitute for WebRTC’s media transport, device access, or NAT traversal.
Keep signaling logic conceptually separate from connection and media logic: signaling delivers setup messages, while the WebRTC APIs and protocols negotiate and carry the real-time session. The WebRTC project’s architecture documentation likewise describes signaling as application-selected.

ICE, STUN, and TURN: how connectivity is established
ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) is the framework endpoints use to gather and test candidate network paths, then select one that works. STUN and TURN have different roles within that process.
| Component | What it does | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| ICE | Coordinates candidate gathering and connectivity checks to find a usable path. | It cannot guarantee a direct path will be available on every network. |
| STUN | Helps an endpoint discover a server-reflexive address and supports connectivity checks. | A STUN server alone is not a universal solution for restrictive NATs or firewalls. |
| TURN | Allocates a relay address so traffic can pass through a server when direct connectivity is not viable. | It does not make the connection direct; relayed traffic uses the TURN service. |
RFC 8835 calls for full ICE support and TURN support for cases involving endpoint-dependent NAT mappings. It also specifies TURN over TCP and TURN over TLS/TCP support for situations where firewalls block UDP. Production applications should plan for TURN rather than assume STUN will make every pair of networks connect directly. Relay use also has operational and cost implications for the service; the amount depends on its deployment and traffic, and no universal figure applies.

Does WebRTC need a server?
WebRTC does not remove servers from an application. A service commonly has a signaling system, and may use TURN relays or additional infrastructure for authentication, recording, conferencing, moderation, or media routing. Which pieces are needed depends on the product.
The signaling path and media path may be different. In a simple call, signaling may be server-assisted while the media path is direct. If ICE cannot establish a direct path, TURN can relay it. A conferencing service may route or mix media through its own server architecture by design. Those are service choices, not evidence that the endpoints have stopped using WebRTC protocols.

WebRTC compared with WebSocket, SIP, and HTTP
| Technology | What it provides | How it relates to WebRTC |
|---|---|---|
| WebRTC | Browser-facing communication APIs plus protocols for real-time audio, video, and data. | Provides standardized connection and transport mechanisms, but leaves signaling and broader service architecture to the application. |
| WebSocket | A bidirectional application messaging channel. | Can carry signaling messages. By itself it does not provide WebRTC media capture, ICE traversal, or secure RTP media transport. |
| SIP | A signaling protocol and broader telephony ecosystem. | Can be used in a WebRTC application or gateway architecture. SIP and WebRTC are not synonymous; interworking may require compatible media negotiation, codecs, and security. |
| HTTP polling or ordinary client/server APIs | Request-and-response application communication. | Useful for many application operations, but not a direct replacement for interactive real-time media transport. |
When choosing an architecture, compare client coverage, whether media is direct, relayed, or server-routed, behavior on restrictive networks, infrastructure cost and control, security and permissions, and the need for observability, recording, moderation, or scaling. No single option is best for every application.
Security and privacy considerations
WebRTC media transport is designed around secure RTP and DTLS-based key exchange. That is important, but encryption alone does not make a calling application trustworthy. RFC 8826’s security considerations emphasize that a web service controls signaling and, ultimately, the JavaScript application logic presented to users. A service can therefore influence who is connected, what permissions are requested, and how the application behaves.
- Request microphone or camera access only when the feature needs it, and give users clear controls for starting and stopping capture.
- Protect signaling and authorization so an unintended party cannot join or manipulate a session.
- Consider the trustworthiness of the page and any code it loads; permission prompts do not by themselves verify a service’s behavior.
- Decide how the application handles connection state, device changes, permission revocation, and recovery when connectivity fails.
A practical implementation sequence
- Design participant discovery and signaling. Decide how users find and authenticate one another and how the application exchanges offers, answers, and ICE candidates. Select a signaling transport that fits the application; WebRTC does not dictate one.
- Request capture only for features that need it. Use browser capture APIs for microphone or camera access, present understandable permission controls, and handle denial or unavailable devices. Device selection, capture quality, and echo cancellation depend on local browser and system support.
- Establish the peer connection and negotiation flow. Use the browser API to manage tracks, session descriptions, and connection state. Keep delivery of negotiation messages in the signaling layer rather than treating signaling as the media transport.
- Configure ICE services for real networks. Supply the ICE server configuration appropriate to the deployment. Use STUN for discovery and checks, and provide TURN for networks where direct connectivity fails. Include TCP and TLS/TCP relay options when UDP-blocking firewalls are in scope.
- Choose media and data-channel behavior deliberately. Media and data channels use different transports. For data channels, determine the purpose of each channel and whether ordering and reliable delivery matter; account for message size and congestion rather than treating the channel as an unlimited generic pipe.
- Observe, diagnose, and recover. Track connection state, media statistics, device changes, and failures. Plan for reconnects and, where appropriate, ICE restarts; handle revoked permissions and changes in TURN relay use. These are operational needs of stateful connections and capture, not guarantees that a connection will never fail.
Common implementation problems and what to check
- Participants never connect: confirm that both clients receive the offer, answer, and ICE candidates through signaling, and that candidates are not lost or associated with the wrong session. Check whether the network requires TURN rather than relying on STUN alone.
- A call works on one network but not another: restrictive NAT or firewall behavior may prevent a direct path. Verify TURN availability, including TCP or TLS/TCP relay support where UDP is blocked.
- Signaling connects but there is no media: a working signaling channel only proves setup messages can pass. Check capture permissions and device availability, negotiation of the intended tracks, and the connection’s ICE state and selected route.
- Users deny or revoke camera or microphone access: handle permission failure as a normal application state. Explain how to enable access or continue without the unavailable media instead of assuming capture succeeded.
- A supposedly peer-to-peer call uses a relay: inspect connection statistics and the selected candidate path. TURN relay use can be expected on networks where a direct route is not viable.
- Data-channel behavior does not suit the feature: review whether the channel’s ordering and reliability choices fit the messages, and whether message size or congestion is affecting the application.
Browser compatibility and deployment checks
There is no compatibility matrix established here for current browser, operating-system, or device combinations. Browser behavior changes, and capture features and device controls can depend on both browser and local system support. Before release, test the actual browser/OS matrix your users need, including permission denial, unavailable devices, restrictive networks, TURN fallback, and reconnect behavior.
When a YouTube 24/7 stream is a different problem
WebRTC is for real-time communication between endpoints; it is not a service for keeping an uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream. For that separate use case, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so a home computer does not have to stay on. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera. Its first day is free with no card; see the StreamNeo free trial.
