To stream from OBS through Wowza with the least delay, first choose the viewer delivery protocol: use RTMP for a straightforward RTMP workflow, or use WebRTC when browser-based, interactive playback is the priority. For RTMP, enter the Wowza live application’s server URL and stream name in OBS, enable Wowza Streaming Engine’s Low-latency stream setting, and test playback in the player your audience will use. The setting is for RTMP clients; it is not a WebRTC setting, and no configuration guarantees a fixed end-to-end delay.
Choose the delivery path before changing settings
OBS sends the live contribution to Wowza; Wowza then delivers it to viewers. The protocol used for viewer playback determines which low-latency settings matter.
| Workflow | When it fits | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS RTMP → Wowza → RTMP viewers | A direct, conventional RTMP publishing and playback workflow. | Wowza’s Low-latency stream setting applies to RTMP clients. Player buffering affects delay and smoothness. |
| OBS RTMP → Wowza → WebRTC viewers | Browser-oriented playback where low interactive delay is important. | Codec/profile compatibility matters. Transcoding may be required and adds startup time and latency. |
| OBS WebRTC/WHIP → provider | A provider-supported WebRTC publishing route when interactive delay is the goal. | OBS requires a provider URL and bearer token. Confirm that the provider and account support the route; do not assume a Wowza endpoint supports it. |
Wowza’s RTMP-to-WebRTC documentation gives expected latency of one second or less for passthrough output and two seconds or less for transcoded output. These are workflow estimates, not guarantees for every encoder, network, player, or location. A separate Wowza Video real-time workflow page describes approximately 500 ms with OBS Enhanced for Real-Time and says RTMP may add approximately one second in that context; its RTMP ingest geography is U.S.-based. Those figures describe different Wowza workflows and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Set up OBS to publish RTMP to Wowza
- Prepare a Wowza live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create or select the live application and obtain its RTMP server/application address and stream name or key. The Docker Compose trial guide demonstrates where connection details come from and how to check the incoming stream. Use your own account’s values; example endpoints and keys are not reusable credentials.
- Enter the connection in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, choose Custom, enter the Wowza RTMP server URL in the server field, and enter the application’s stream name/key in the stream key field. Keep the key private.
- Choose an output your system can sustain. Set the encoded resolution and frame rate for the audience and your machine. OBS’s overview guide explains that Output (Scaled) Resolution is the encoded stream resolution and recommends matching Common FPS to the desired output. Higher frame rates, including 60 fps, can demand more system capacity than 30 fps. Test the intended output before an important broadcast.
- Start and verify the contribution. Select Start Streaming in OBS. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the live application’s Incoming Streams view and confirm the stream appears as Active. If it does not, check the URL, application path, stream name/key, and network before tuning latency.
OBS’s overview guide dates from 2021, so treat its interface descriptions as conceptual rather than a guarantee that every current OBS version has identical screens.

Enable Wowza’s low-latency RTMP behavior
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the live application and edit its Setup.
- Enable Low-latency stream, save the application settings, and restart the application.
- Alternatively, set
Streams/StreamTypetolive-lowlatencyin the application’s XML configuration, then restart the engine. - Test with the actual RTMP player and playback path intended for viewers. The setting described here is for RTMP-based clients, not a general switch for WebRTC delivery.
Wowza’s RTMP player guidance says a zero NetStream.setBufferTime() minimizes latency but may make playback less smooth. It suggests trying a small positive value, such as 0.1 or 0.25, if playback stability needs improvement. In the documented player context, Wowza says H.264 at 30 fps with any positive buffer adds at least 2–3 seconds of latency, with more at lower frame rates. This specific caveat should not be generalized to other player stacks.
Use WebRTC playback when the audience needs interactive delay
With this route, OBS can still send RTMP to Wowza while Wowza delivers playback using WebRTC. Configure WebRTC for the Wowza live application, including its TLS and signaling requirements, and test using Wowza’s WebRTC playback path. WebRTC is not enabled by the RTMP Low-latency stream checkbox.

Check codecs before adding transcoding
Wowza notes that RTMP-to-WebRTC workflows may need audio or video transcoding to match supported codecs or profiles. Its passthrough video-only example uses H.264. For a source intended for WebRTC, Wowza recommends disabling B-frames where possible. Transcoding can solve compatibility problems, but it adds startup time and latency; use it only when the source and playback requirements call for it.
Consider OBS WHIP only with confirmed provider support
WHIP is OBS’s WebRTC publishing route. OBS’s WHIP guide applies to OBS version 32.1.0 and newer and requires the server URL and bearer token supplied by the provider. Check the provider’s current documentation and account configuration before relying on a particular Wowza WHIP route.

Tune for the bottleneck you can observe
Do not lower quality or change several encoder settings just because playback feels delayed. First determine whether the problem is contribution instability, encoder load, transcoding, or viewer buffering.
- OBS shows dropped frames: OBS attributes these to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its 2024 troubleshooting guidance suggests a bitrate starting point around 75% of total upload speed, not a universal ideal. Lower the video bitrate if needed and try another ingest server where available.
- Frames are smooth at a lower output: If the computer struggles at the selected resolution or frame rate, test a lower setting. OBS notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. Change one variable at a time and observe a sustained stream.
- RTMP playback is delayed but OBS is stable: Check the Wowza application setting and the player’s buffer behavior. Reducing a buffer may lower delay while making playback less smooth.
- WebRTC playback fails or needs transcoding: Verify supported audio/video codecs and profiles, inspect B-frame use, then enable only the transcoding needed for compatibility.
- Wowza does not show an active incoming stream: Recheck the exact application URL and stream name/key, then confirm OBS is actually streaming and the network can reach the configured ingest endpoint.
Copyright and live-stream readiness
Low latency does not change the rights needed to broadcast your material. Before streaming, confirm that you have permission for every video, soundtrack, photograph, clip, and other element in the program. A live setup also needs a rehearsal: verify that the incoming stream is active, playback works through the intended viewer path, and the chosen output runs steadily for long enough to expose connection or capacity problems.
