Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the Shangri-Las, died on January 19, 2024, at age 75 in Palm Springs, California. The Associated Press reported at the time that no cause of death had been given. Her voice led some of the mid-1960s girl group era’s most vivid songs of teenage love and heartbreak, including “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” and “Leader of the Pack.”
Who was Mary Weiss?
Weiss was the lead vocalist of the Shangri-Las, a Queens group she formed with her sister Betty Weiss and twins Margie and Mary Ann Ganser. They began coming together as a group while attending high school in 1963, according to the Associated Press.
The Shangri-Las stood apart from many girl groups of the period through a tough, working-class image and dramatic songs that gave teenage romance a sense of danger and loss. Their best-known recordings include “Remember (Walking in the Sand),” “Leader of the Pack,” and “I Can Never Go Home Anymore.”

What were the Shangri-Las’ biggest songs?
“Remember (Walking in the Sand)”
Released in 1964, the song became the group’s first major hit. The Associated Press reported that it reached the Billboard top five that year.
“Leader of the Pack”
The group’s signature song turned a teenage romance into a tightly staged tragedy. The Associated Press described it as the top Billboard single of 1965.

“I Can Never Go Home Anymore”
This later Shangri-Las recording continued the group’s focus on heartbreak, pairing an intimate vocal delivery with a story of separation and regret.
Why did the Shangri-Las break up?
The group disbanded in 1968 amid legal disputes. The Guardian’s obituary connects those disputes to unfavorable contracts signed early in the group’s career.

What did Mary Weiss do after the Shangri-Las?
Weiss spent years away from music and worked at an architectural firm, the Associated Press reported. She returned with her solo album Dangerous Game in 2007. The Shangri-Las’ two studio albums, Leader of the Pack and Shangri-Las-65!, were both released in 1965, according to Pitchfork.
In a 2007 interview at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as quoted by the Associated Press, Weiss reflected on how women were treated in the music business: “I truly believe a lot of men were considered artists, whether or not people wrote for them where women were considered products.”
