Use HTTPS throughout. For licensed or high-value content, consider DRM as an additional layer—not a substitute for access controls.
How do I stop people from watching my live stream without permission?
Build protection around the full playback path, not just a password-protected page or an unlisted link. A viewer may be able to share a watch URL, inspect a public manifest, or fetch media from a discoverable origin if those requests are not independently controlled.
- Authenticate the viewer and check entitlement. Your application or identity system should determine whether a signed-in account is allowed to watch the specific event. A valid account alone need not mean access to every stream.
- Issue a limited playback credential from a trusted backend. After the entitlement check, have the backend provide a signed URL, signed cookie, or token with a short validity window and only the content scope needed. Do not put a long-lived shared secret in webpage or player code.
- Validate credentials on playback requests. Enforce authorization at the CDN or video service for manifests and media segments, not only when the viewer first opens the player. This helps prevent an unauthenticated person from reusing a manifest or segment URL.
- Keep the media origin private. Configure it to accept requests only through the intended CDN or other authorized delivery route. If viewers can reach the origin directly, they may bypass CDN token checks or geographic rules.
- Use HTTPS and apply geographic restrictions only where needed. If territorial rights or policy require geographic limits, enforce them on the actual delivery path and make sure the private-origin design does not create a bypass.
- Add DRM when the content and device requirements justify it. Assess supported devices, player stack, stream packaging, encryption configuration, and who will operate the keys and licenses.
AWS’s Streaming Media Lens warns that exposing an origin directly can let anyone retrieve streams by guessing or discovering origin URLs. Its architecture guidance also cautions against overly long credential expirations and unrotated shared secrets. These controls reduce casual and unauthorized access; they cannot guarantee that an authorized viewer will not capture or redistribute what they can see.
Choose the right playback credential
Signed URLs, signed cookies, and tokens all grant access, but they are not interchangeable in scope or implementation. Choose based on what the player must request and where your system can enforce the decision.

| Credential approach | Useful when | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Signed URL | Access is being granted to an individual resource or request. | Keep its expiry no longer than the viewing workflow requires; a long-lived URL is easier to reuse if shared. |
| Signed cookie | A viewer needs access to multiple protected resources under a broader playback scope. | Set the cookie scope and lifetime carefully so it does not grant unnecessary access. |
| Token or JWT | The delivery service or CDN supports token validation for a playback session or content scope. | Keep signing secrets on trusted systems and validate the token on relevant playback requests. |
CloudFront documents signed URLs and signed cookies as private-content controls. Cloudflare Stream documents signed video access: when signed URLs are required, the video ID alone no longer enables public viewing. Its documented method does not support Live WebRTC. CloudFront is a CDN whose private-content controls must be integrated with the application and origin architecture; Cloudflare Stream is a managed video service with documented signed-video access, so they should not be treated as identical products.
Where should authorization be checked?
Use the application or backend to decide who may watch, and the delivery layer to enforce that decision on media requests. Backend-only authorization is insufficient if a viewer can obtain a reusable media URL and fetch it without further checks. CDN-only authorization is also not a replacement for the application’s account and entitlement decision.

- Application/backend: authenticate the account, check the event entitlement, and issue a scoped, time-limited credential.
- CDN or video-service edge: validate the credential for playback requests, including manifests and segments.
- Origin: allow only the intended delivery path, so direct-origin requests cannot sidestep edge controls.
AWS’s edge-delivery guidance describes token authorization and session revocation as an architecture pattern. If your system needs to end access before a credential naturally expires, design for revocation or session invalidation rather than relying only on the original expiry.
When should you use DRM?
DRM encrypts content and relies on a compatible player and license workflow to authorize decryption. It raises implementation and device-compatibility requirements, so it is most relevant when the content’s value or licensing terms warrant that added complexity. DRM does not replace viewer sign-in, entitlement checks, token validation, HTTPS, or origin restrictions.

Google’s Live Stream API documentation describes specific supported DRM configurations; it says a third-party DRM provider must create and manage keys and licenses, while the API encrypts content using configured keys. Apple describes FairPlay as protecting HLS playback on Apple platforms through content encryption and secure key exchange. AWS SPEKE documentation covers packaging, signaling, and license-server requirements for DRM integrations. These are specific integration descriptions, not a universal compatibility guarantee or evidence that DRM alone prevents screen recording or redistribution.

- Anonymous request: a person who is not signed in should not receive usable playback credentials.
- Expired credential: an expired URL, cookie, or token should no longer authorize playback requests.
- Revoked access: a removed entitlement or invalidated session should stop access according to the revocation design.
- Direct-origin request: a request that bypasses the intended CDN route should be rejected.
- Allowed viewer: an entitled account using the supported player should be able to start and continue playback, including required manifest and segment requests.
- Geographic rule, if used: confirm the restriction applies through the actual delivery route and cannot be bypassed through the origin.
Common protection failures and fixes
| Symptom or weakness | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A shared watch link works for people who should not have access. | The page or media URL is public, or the credential lasts too long. | Require sign-in and entitlement checks, issue short-lived playback credentials, and confirm edge validation applies to media requests. |
| Playback works through the CDN but also from a direct origin URL. | The origin is publicly reachable or does not restrict its authorized route. | Restrict origin access to the intended CDN or authorized path and test direct-origin requests. |
| The player page checks access, but copied media requests still work. | Authorization is enforced only in the application and not on manifests or segments. | Validate credentials at the delivery edge for the relevant playback requests. |
| Geographic restrictions appear ineffective. | The origin or another delivery route bypasses the CDN’s geographic policy. | Apply the policy to the actual playback path and ensure the origin cannot be used to bypass it. |
| A DRM-enabled stream fails on some devices. | The device, player, packaging, encryption, or license workflow may not match the configured DRM support. | Check the documented configuration for the exact protocol, container, DRM system, and scheme, and verify the license-service integration. |
| A viewer can still share or record what they are watching. | Access controls cannot prevent every form of capture or redistribution by an authorized viewer. | Set realistic expectations; use access controls and DRM as protection layers, not an absolute anti-copy guarantee. |
