Live-streaming terms describe different stages of getting video from a source to a viewer. RTMP and SRT may carry a stream into a platform; HLS and DASH may carry processed video out to viewers. Encoding prepares media for transmission, transcoding can create other versions, and adaptive bitrate playback lets a player switch among those versions as network conditions change.
How a live stream moves from source to viewer
A typical workflow begins with a camera or another media source. An encoder prepares its audio and video, then sends the stream to a platform for ingest. Depending on the service and configuration, the platform may transcode the incoming stream, package it for playback, and distribute it through a content delivery network (CDN). A viewer’s player requests the media and may change quality as conditions change.
This is an example, not a universal architecture: Google Cloud documents a workflow that accepts SRT or RTMP inputs and creates HLS or DASH outputs, while ITU-T describes encoding and upload followed by platform transcoding, multiplexing, and CDN delivery. The exact stages and who performs them depend on the provider and setup. Google Cloud Live Stream API overview; ITU-T Recommendation H.705.2 (September 2023).
Source and ingest: getting the stream to a platform
Ingest
Ingest is the process of sending a live source signal to a streaming platform or service so it can be processed. It is the input side of the workflow, not the format a viewer necessarily receives.

RTMP and SRT
RTMP and SRT are protocol names you may see in encoder or platform settings. They can be used to carry a source stream to a service; the destination determines which inputs it supports. They should not be confused with HLS or DASH, which are commonly discussed as playback and delivery technologies. Google Cloud’s documented workflow, for example, uses RTMP or SRT at input and HLS or DASH at output. Google Cloud Live Stream API overview.
Processing: preparing and converting media
Encoding
Encoding prepares audio and video data for transmission using a selected codec and configuration. An encoder can run at the source, such as in streaming software, before the signal is sent to the platform. The settings must be compatible with the destination service.
Codec
A codec is the method used to compress and decompress audio or video. It is not the same thing as a container, a transport protocol, or a delivery format. Platform documentation lists these separately because each describes a different part of how media is prepared, carried, or played. Google Cloud’s live-streaming documentation, for instance, distinguishes supported codecs from protocols. Google Cloud Live Stream API overview.

Transcoding
Transcoding converts an incoming encoded signal into other output forms or quality levels. A platform may do this after ingest so that viewers can receive versions suited to different bandwidth or device conditions. It is distinct from encoding at the source: encoding creates a transmission-ready signal, while transcoding transforms an existing encoded signal. The details vary by service. Packaging and delivery: how viewers receive media
Packaging, segments, and manifests
For HTTP-based playback, a service can package media into segments and provide a description of the available stream, often called a manifest. The player uses that description to request media. Implementations differ, so segment and manifest details are not identical across every service or format.
HLS
HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is Apple’s live and on-demand streaming technology. It uses ordinary web servers and CDNs for delivery and can adapt playback to network conditions. Those characteristics help explain why HLS appears in discussions of viewer playback rather than simply as another name for an encoder’s ingest connection. Apple Developer: HTTP Live Streaming (HLS).

DASH
Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is a suite of MPEG standards for streaming multimedia using HTTP infrastructure. It supports both live and on-demand media and can use existing servers, CDNs, proxies, and caches. It is a distinct standards family from Apple’s HLS, even though both concern HTTP-based delivery. MPEG: Standards – MPEG-DASH.
CDN
A content delivery network distributes stream media through delivery infrastructure used to serve viewers. A platform’s workflow may store or prepare output and configure a CDN backend; DASH can also use CDNs, proxies, and caches. The CDN’s role is delivery, not source encoding. Google Cloud Live Stream API overview; MPEG: Standards – MPEG-DASH.

Playback quality: bitrate and adaptive streams
Bitrate
Bitrate is the rate at which encoded data is delivered or consumed, commonly expressed in bits per second. It affects how much data a stream carries, but there is no single bitrate that is right for every live stream: recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the chosen platform’s current encoder guidance for its supported settings rather than treating a bitrate from another service or configuration as universal. Rendition and bitrate ladder
A rendition is one prepared version of a stream at a particular quality level. A bitrate ladder is a set of such versions at different quality levels. When a service transcodes a live stream into several renditions, a player can choose among them to suit its estimated bandwidth and the viewer’s conditions. Cloudflare Stream: Live video.
ABR (adaptive bitrate streaming)
Adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) is playback that can switch among available renditions as network conditions change. HLS supports adaptation, and a player can use bandwidth estimates to select a suitable version. ABR offers choices; it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback or one fixed picture quality. Apple Developer: HTTP Live Streaming (HLS); Cloudflare Stream: Live video.
Buffering
Buffering is the player’s use of media it has received and kept ready for playback. If the player does not have media ready when it needs it, playback can pause while it waits. Network adaptation and playback delay are related concerns, but buffering is not a single standardized amount of delay or a guarantee that a stream will recover smoothly. The result depends on the player, service, and network conditions. Apple Developer: HTTP Live Streaming (HLS); IETF RFC 9317 (2022).

Latency: why live video is delayed
Latency is the delay between an event happening and its presentation to a viewer. A live stream is not necessarily instantaneous: a workflow may include encoding, platform processing, packaging, delivery, and player buffering. The required delay depends on what the audience is doing. An interactive conversation generally benefits from prompt delivery, while a non-interactive stream may not need the same latency target. There is no universal threshold that makes every stream “low latency”; requirements and trade-offs depend on the application and deployment. ITU-T Recommendation H.705.2 (September 2023); IETF RFC 9317 (2022).
VOD: recorded video available on demand
Video on demand (VOD) is previously recorded media made available for playback, rather than media created and streamed while an event is happening. A platform may support both live streaming and VOD, but the terms describe different kinds of viewing and timing. IETF RFC 9317 (2022).
How to tell which term matters in a setup screen
- If the setting asks how your encoder sends video to a service, look for ingest protocols such as RTMP or SRT.
- If it asks how the video is compressed, look for codec and encoding settings.
- If it describes the platform creating multiple output qualities, that is transcoding into renditions.
- If it concerns the viewer’s HTTP-based playback, HLS or DASH may be relevant, depending on the platform.
- If viewers report changing picture quality, ABR and available renditions may be involved; check the platform’s playback behavior and your source settings.
- If viewers report delay, distinguish latency from buffering, then consider the application’s need for interaction and the service’s available latency options.
Protocol support, codec compatibility, recommended bitrate, and latency modes are platform-specific and can change. Check the current documentation for the service you are configuring. For YouTube encoder settings, see YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
