To live stream an IP camera to Wowza Streaming Engine, create a live application, configure its playback types, add the camera’s RTSP URI as a Stream File, and connect it using the rtp MediaCaster type. Confirm the stream is active in Engine Manager, then test playback. The camera’s RTSP address is model-specific; use the URI in its manual rather than assuming a universal format.

How do I stream an IP camera to Wowza?

Wowza’s current IP-camera instructions describe a workflow for Wowza Streaming Engine. The Engine application receives the camera feed; playback types determine how viewers or players can access it.

  1. Create a live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create a live application for the camera stream.
  2. Enable the playback types your audience needs. The guide lists MPEG-DASH, HLS, RTMP, and RTSP/RTP. Playback protocols are separate from the camera’s input connection, so enable the formats required by the players that will consume the stream. Restart the application after changing playback or security settings, as directed in the guide.
  3. Find the camera’s RTSP URI. Check the camera’s manual or manufacturer documentation for the exact stream address and any required account credentials. Wowza notes that “IP camera manufacturers use proprietary URL syntax,” so an address that works for one brand or model may not work for another. Wowza’s IP-camera guide was updated September 30, 2026.
  4. Add the URI as a Stream File. In Engine Manager, add a Stream File using the camera’s RTSP URI. If the camera requires login, include the camera’s own credentials in the source connection as its documentation specifies.
  5. Connect it to the application. Configure the stream file to use MediaCaster Type rtp. Use rtp-record instead only if you intend to record the incoming stream to a file at the same time.
  6. Check the incoming stream. In the application’s Incoming Streams view, confirm that the stream is listed as Active. Review uptime and throughput for signs that it is receiving data.
  7. Test playback. Use Test Playback to obtain a playback URL, then open it with a player compatible with the playback type you enabled.

What RTSP URL do I use for my camera?

Use the RTSP URI documented for the camera’s exact model and stream profile. Manufacturers choose their own path and authentication conventions; a generic URL template can mislead you or connect to the wrong stream.

Keep the two credential checks distinct. The camera URI may need the camera’s username and password. Separately, Wowza says RTSP/RTP encoders publishing to Engine require source authentication by default. Configure that publishing access in Engine Manager under Source Authentication. See Wowza’s Source Authentication instructions and its publishing guidance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the camera feed before troubleshooting Engine

Test the camera URI directly in VLC before treating a failed Engine connection as an application problem. In VLC, open the network stream and enter the camera URI, then inspect Codec Information for the video and audio formats. Wowza’s guide lists H.264/AVC1/MPEG4 Part 10 or H.265/HEVC video and AAC or MP3 audio as its format guidance. If the feed uses an unsupported format, transcode it before sending it to Engine. This format guidance is not a guarantee that every codec combination will work in every playback client.

  • If VLC cannot connect, recheck the model-specific URI, camera account, network access, and camera stream settings.
  • If VLC connects but Engine does not, compare the camera’s transport and authentication requirements with the Engine application configuration.
  • If Engine reports an active stream but a viewer cannot play it, verify that the needed playback type is enabled and that the test player supports it.

Troubleshoot common IP-camera connection problems

Incorrect URI or camera credentials

Recheck the camera manual for the URI path and stream profile, then verify the camera login separately. A valid camera account does not replace Wowza’s source authentication for encoders publishing into Engine.

Unsupported codec

Inspect the feed in VLC’s Codec Information. If the camera output does not match the formats Wowza lists, transcode the feed before sending it to Engine.

RTSP/RTP transport incompatibility

If the camera cannot use RTSP/RTP interleaved transport (RTP over TCP), Wowza documents setting RTPTransportMode to udp. This application-level setting affects all streams delivered by that application, not only the camera being diagnosed. Check the other streams before changing it.

Camera behind NAT advertises a private address

A camera behind network address translation (NAT) may advertise an internal address that Engine cannot reach. For Engine 4.12.0 and later, Wowza documents the per-stream-file setting rtspIgnoreAdvertisedHost. It makes Engine use the host and port from the configured URI instead of the advertised host and port, while preserving the URI’s path, query, and scheme details as described in the guide. Confirm the Engine version and follow the setting’s documented placement before applying it.

Periodic disconnects during validation

For cameras that disconnect during periodic RTSP/RTP validation, Wowza documents rtspValidationFrequency as a way to turn that validation off. The application property applies to every stream in the application. Diagnose the disconnect first and consider the impact on all those streams before changing it.

Wowza Streaming Engine or Wowza Video?

Engine and Wowza Video are different workflows. The current documented IP-camera procedure above is for self-managed Wowza Streaming Engine. A separate Wowza Video article describes a hosted setup, but its title identifies it as Legacy; check current service availability and interface before relying on it.

Route What the cited instructions describe Important qualification
Wowza Streaming Engine Create a live application, add the camera URI as a Stream File, and connect it with MediaCaster type rtp. The camera source must be reachable by the Engine server. See Wowza’s Engine guide.
Wowza Video Select IP Camera as the source, enter a publicly accessible camera URL, match the input resolution, start the stream, and check the preview. The instructions are on a page titled “Connect an IP camera to Wowza Video Legacy,” updated February 8, 2024. Current availability and pricing are not established here. See the Legacy article.

The Legacy Wowza Video article recommends a keyframe interval of 60 fps for NTSC or 50 fps for PAL. That is the instruction in that specific legacy workflow, not a universal camera setting; follow the requirements for the particular service and camera configuration you use.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a different use case—keeping uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream—StreamNeo is a cloud service, not an IP-camera ingest tool. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not broadcast a camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo loops uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on.
  • One flat price per slot covers any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
