To analyze Wowza Streaming Engine logs in Sawmill, enable Wowza’s serverStats appender, import the resulting wowzastreamingengine_stats.log file using Sawmill’s Wowza plug-in, then build reports around the fields your configuration actually records. The configuration steps depend on your Wowza version: use the Log4j 2 method for 4.8.8.01 and later, and the legacy Log4j 1.x method for 4.8.5 and earlier.
1. Check your Wowza version and logging format
Before editing configuration, identify the exact Wowza Streaming Engine version. Wowza says Log4j 2 logging is available in version 4.8.8.01 and later; earlier releases use Log4j 1.x. Its current analysis setup page applies to 4.8.8.01 and later, while its legacy instructions cover 4.8.5 and earlier. The reviewed documentation does not detail the interval from 4.8.6 through 4.8.8.00, so consult the documentation shipped with that exact release before changing production logging.

2. Enable the statistics log
Wowza 4.8.8.01 and later: Log4j 2
- Open
[install-dir]/conf/log4j2-config.xml. - In the Root logger, enable the appender references Wowza documents:
stdout,serverAccess,serverError,serverStats,vhostAccess, andvhostError. - Follow Wowza’s example levels:
infofor stdout, access, and stats appenders;warnfor error appenders.
Use the exact XML structure and appender names in the version-specific Wowza instructions; do not substitute the legacy properties syntax.

Wowza 4.8.5 and earlier: legacy Log4j 1.x
- Open
[install-dir]/conf/log4j.properties. - Add
serverStatsto thelog4j.rootCategoryappender list. Wowza’s example islog4j.rootCategory=INFO, stdout, serverAccess, serverError, serverStats.
Do not apply this legacy line to a Log4j 2 configuration. The complete legacy procedure is in Wowza’s legacy log-analysis instructions.
3. Find the log file to import
Wowza identifies wowzastreamingengine_stats.log as the best log file for analysis tools. Engine logs normally reside in [install-dir]/logs. This is distinct from Manager logs, which are stored in [install-dir]/manager/logs; do not import a Manager log when your goal is to analyze Engine statistics.

Wowza’s logging overview describes the Engine log location and logged fields. The analysis setup page identifies the statistics file for analysis tools.
4. Import the file into Sawmill
- Open Sawmill and create or configure a log profile for the Wowza log.
- Select Sawmill’s Wowza Streaming Engine/ Wowza Media Server log format plug-in, then point the import at
wowzastreamingengine_stats.log. - Run the import and inspect parsed fields before relying on reports. If the log format or fields were customized, test with a representative file and check that the values are being interpreted as intended.
- Use Sawmill’s filters and reports to narrow the imported data to the clients, streams, traffic, protocols, or virtual hosts relevant to your question.
Sawmill lists a Wowza Media Systems Wowza Media Server plug-in and describes parsing and filtered reporting. Its supported log formats page notes that custom formats are possible. The cited product information does not provide a version-by-version compatibility matrix, so validate the import rather than assuming every customized log parses identically.

5. Choose reports that match the fields in your log
Wowza documents fields including c-client-id, c-ip, c-proto, c-referrer, c-user-agent, cs-bytes, cs-stream-bytes, x-stream-id, x-suri, and x-vhost. The selected appenders and configured fields determine what is present in your actual file. Sawmill can report on stored fields, aggregate numeric fields, and filter dynamically, so use only fields confirmed in the import.
- Traffic volume: examine
cs-bytesorcs-stream-bytes, where present, and aggregate by time, stream, or virtual host. - Client mix: group by
c-ip,c-user-agent, orc-referrerwhen recorded. Treat IPs and user-agent strings as log attributes, not as proof of unique people or devices. - Protocol and stream activity: filter on
c-proto,x-stream-id, orx-suriif available in the imported data. - Virtual-host comparisons: group or filter by
x-vhostif your configured log contains it.
These reports describe only the fields captured and retained in the file; a missing field cannot answer a question about that dimension.

Wowza says the Manager’s Logs tool works best for small files and simple searches. For files several megabytes or larger, or for more complex searches, download the logs or access them in the installation directories instead of relying on the Manager’s small-file viewing workflow. Wowza describes detailed default output as Extended Common Log Format, but the appenders and configured fields control what is written. If a log was customized, confirm Sawmill’s parsing against a representative file. Sawmill’s format page discusses supported formats and custom formats, but does not establish compatibility for every possible Wowza customization.
