Choose one that represents your public identity, follows YouTube’s rules and is easy for your intended audience to recognize, type and share.
What a YouTube handle is—and what it is not
Your handle is your channel’s distinct, @-prefixed identifier; it is not the same thing as your channel name. Every channel has a handle. Viewers may see it when you comment, are mentioned, participate in Live Chat or publish Shorts. YouTube also creates a URL based on the handle when you select or change it. YouTube Help explains handles and their current rules.
A display name can be shared by multiple channels; a handle must be available for your channel and comply with YouTube’s naming requirements. For a documentary channel, for example, a handle might use the channel’s established title or the creator’s name, while the display name can remain formatted for the channel’s branding.
How to choose a handle that works
- Start with the identity viewers already know. YouTube’s guidance is to select a handle that best represents your public identity on the platform. Consider your channel name, creator name, documentary project or organization.
- Make it recognizable and practical to enter. Think about whether your intended audience can remember it and type it accurately. This is practical advice, not a claim that YouTube ranks handles by memorability.
- Consider where it will be shared. Less common characters or scripts may be difficult for some viewers to type, and some external apps may display or support the link poorly. If sharing beyond YouTube is important, weigh that against the identity fit.
- Check availability and rule compliance. An unavailable handle may already be in use or may not meet YouTube’s rules. If your first choice is unavailable, YouTube suggests trying periods, numbers or underscores.
- Allow for the channel’s future. If you expect the channel’s name or focus to change, choose a handle that can still represent it. This is planning advice, not a platform requirement.
YouTube handle rules to check
YouTube’s general handle length is 3–30 characters, with exceptions for some writing systems: Han and Hangul handles can be 1–10 characters, while Ethiopic, Hiragana and Katakana handles can be 2–20. Mixed-script cases may vary. The platform supports letters and numbers from specified languages, as well as certain separators.

- Handles are not case-sensitive.
- Underscores, hyphens, periods and Latin middle dots are allowed, but a separator cannot be the first or last character.
- A handle cannot be URL-like or phone-number-like, already in use, or in violation of YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
- Mixed scripts have restrictions, including limits on mixing left-to-right and right-to-left scripts.
- YouTube does not allow handles to be sold or transferred.
YouTube reserves the right to change, reclaim or remove a handle. It says it may revoke a handle that violates its Community Guidelines and generate a new one. See YouTube’s full handle guidance for supported languages and current details.
How to set or change your handle on desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Customization, then Profile.
- Edit the Handle field and check whether your choice is available.
- Select Publish to apply the change.
You can change your handle twice within a 14-day period. YouTube holds your former handle for 14 days after a change, during which you can switch back and both the former and updated handle URLs work. Handle URLs and older channel links
A handle URL takes the form youtube.com/@yourhandle. YouTube creates it automatically when you choose or change a handle. Existing custom URLs continue to work, but creators can no longer create new custom URLs or change existing ones. Legacy custom URLs redirect to the newer handle-based channel URL. Channels may also have an ID-based URL and, depending on their history, a legacy username URL. YouTube describes these options in its channel URL guide and custom URL overview.
If your handle includes characters beyond A–Z, 0–9 and the listed separators, some people may not have a keyboard that makes it easy to type, and some external apps may not handle its link well. YouTube says copied URLs use encoding; sharing from the YouTube app may sometimes use the channel ID URL instead. Those are practical sharing considerations, not a reason that every creator must use Latin characters.
