To start a YouTube live stream, choose the simplest path that fits your format: use a phone for a mobile update, a webcam for a straightforward computer stream, or an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, multiple sources, or more production control. Before buying equipment, confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel, test your upload capacity, and rehearse the complete setup.
Choose the right way to stream
YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming. The right choice depends on what you need to show and how much control the production requires—not on buying the most equipment.
| Route | Best suited to | Setup and production trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile device | Quick updates, vlogging, and streams where mobility matters | Simple and portable, but subject to mobile-specific eligibility and supported-device requirements. |
| Webcam | A straightforward stream from a computer | Less setup than an encoder production; not the route to choose when you need a more involved multi-source setup. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, overlays, or multiple cameras and microphones | Offers more production options and control, but requires configuring an encoder and checking its output in YouTube Studio. |
A phone or computer webcam can be enough to begin. YouTube says creators do not need expensive equipment to start. Add gear or an encoder when the format calls for it. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.
Check channel eligibility first
For live streaming generally, YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable access well before a scheduled event. Check YouTube’s current live streaming tips because platform requirements can change.

Additional requirements for mobile
Mobile live streaming has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, live streaming enabled, and a supported mobile device. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm the current rules on its mobile live streaming Help page before planning a mobile-only event.
Choose equipment for the production you actually need
For a simple stream, a phone or computer webcam may be enough. For an encoder-based casual or gaming stream, YouTube identifies an external microphone, webcam, and headphones as common options. More involved productions may use multiple microphones and cameras, a mixer, and a hardware encoder; these are production choices, not prerequisites.

For a first stream, use available equipment and add components only to solve a real production need. YouTube’s encoder guide describes common hardware and connection steps.
Set up an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming. Open YouTube Studio and use the Live Control Room workflow to enable access and create or select a stream. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Connect the production equipment. Attach the microphone, webcam, headset, capture hardware, or other supported devices to the computer and configure them in your encoder.
- Copy the stream details into the encoder. In the encoder’s streaming settings, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not share it publicly. If it is compromised, YouTube provides a way to reset it.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check framing, picture, and audio before starting the event. For a scheduled stream, follow the Studio workflow to start the event once the preview appears.
- Monitor the live stream. Watch stream health and audio/video quality during the event. YouTube recommends preparing encoders in advance and starting them at least 15 minutes before the event.
Follow YouTube’s current step-by-step encoder instructions for the Studio controls and stream details displayed on your channel.

Choose encoder settings that fit your upload connection
Match resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the format you intend to broadcast and the upload capacity available during the stream. The H.264 bitrate ranges below are YouTube recommendations; they are not a substitute for testing your connection.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate range |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps |
YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC as video codec options and publishes bitrate guidance for those codecs and additional resolutions. Consult its live encoder settings table for the exact combination you plan to use instead of transferring an H.264 figure to a different codec or resolution.

- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate encoding, as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Ingest protocol: For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends RTMPS.
These settings are from YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations. If your encoder exposes different labels, consult its documentation and verify that the resulting stream matches YouTube’s requirements.
Check upload capacity and leave room for network variation
Use an upload-speed test on the network and at the location where you will stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Account for the total stream bitrate and any backup stream, and remember that other people and devices on the same network can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. An advertised download speed does not establish the upload capacity available to your broadcast.

- Confirm channel verification, live streaming access, and any mobile-specific eligibility that applies.
- Rehearse with representative speech, movement, and the actual stream format.
- Measure upload speed and leave the recommended bandwidth headroom.
- Check the encoder preview, picture, and audio before starting the event.
- Confirm the stream is available on the channel or watch page and check it on a mobile device; monitor quality while live.
- If you use local archives or a backup encoder, verify that the archive is being written and that failover works.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream, rather than assuming the encoder preview alone confirms the viewer experience. See its live streaming tips and streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Channel verification, live streaming access, restrictions in the previous 90 days, or the time needed for first-time activation | Check eligibility in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. For mobile, also check the subscriber, device, and other mobile requirements. |
| The encoder does not connect | Whether the server URL and stream key match the stream selected in YouTube Studio | Recheck the values in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; reset it through YouTube if it has been compromised. |
| The preview is missing or not ready | Whether the encoder is running and sending to the correct stream, and whether the Studio preview has appeared | Wait for the preview and verify the stream details before starting a scheduled event. |
| Video or audio quality is poor | Actual upload capacity, competing network use, configured bitrate, and whether the selected output format is within YouTube’s recommendations | Rehearse on the stream network, leave bandwidth headroom, and lower bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain them. |
| Viewers report a problem you do not see in the encoder | Availability on the channel or watch page, playback on another device, and stream health in YouTube Studio | Check the stream as a viewer on a mobile device and monitor Studio during the event. |
| A backup or archive is unavailable when needed | Whether local recording is actually being written and whether backup-encoder failover works | Test both before the event; do not assume a configured archive or backup is functioning without verifying it. |
