To start creating on YouTube, sign in with a Google Account, create a channel, choose a video idea for a specific audience, and publish with the equipment you already have. Your first upload can be a regular video or a Short. Make each video clear and original, then use YouTube Analytics to learn from how viewers respond—there is no guaranteed niche or posting schedule that makes a channel grow.

1. Choose what you want to make—and who it is for

Start with a viewer, not a gear list. Write down whom you want to help or entertain, what they might be looking for, and what a video could give them. For a documentary-focused channel, for example, that might mean explaining one overlooked event, examining a historical claim, or profiling a person whose story is not widely known.

Give each video a distinct idea and a clear promise. YouTube says its discovery systems use multiple signals, including what viewers watch or skip, watch time, likes and dislikes, “not interested” feedback, and satisfaction surveys. There is no reliable secret code or guaranteed growth formula; YouTube’s creator guidance recommends focusing on videos you think will resonate with your audience. YouTube’s creator guidance explains its advice.

2. Create your YouTube channel

  1. Sign in to YouTube with a Google Account.
  2. Choose Create Account and select whether the channel is for personal or business use.
  3. Set up the channel so viewers can identify what it covers. You can then upload videos, create Shorts and playlists, and comment as a creator.

YouTube’s channel-creation and beginner guidance is at YouTube’s creator blog. Exact screens and labels can change, so follow the current prompts shown in your account.

3. Pick the format that fits the idea

Either a Short or a longer video can be a first upload. Choose according to the shape of the story and how you want a viewer to experience it—not on an assumption that one format guarantees more reach.

Format How to make and upload Useful fit Current platform details
Short Record in the YouTube mobile app or upload a vertical video. A focused idea that works in a brief, self-contained viewing session. YouTube Help describes Shorts up to 3 minutes and a maximum upload resolution of 1080p.
Longer video Upload through YouTube’s standard Create flow. An idea that needs more room for explanation, reporting, or a sequence of scenes. The cited beginner sources do not set a universal ideal length for longer videos.

These Shorts limits and workflows reflect YouTube Help guidance accessed October 3, 2026; platform rules can change. See Get started creating YouTube Shorts.

4. Make a first video with the equipment you have

A smartphone is enough to begin, particularly for Shorts. YouTube’s April 8, 2025 Shorts guide calls the smartphone a creator’s primary tool; a tripod for stability and a ring light for lighting are optional, not prerequisites. You do not need to buy a camera, microphone, or lighting kit before you can start. YouTube’s Shorts guide describes this accessible approach.

  • Choose a quiet, well-lit place and frame the subject so it is easy to see.
  • Make the opening clear: show or explain what the video is about early.
  • For a documentary or explainer, distinguish what you know from what you are interpreting, and use material you have the right to include.
  • Review the finished video before publishing. Check that the picture and sound are understandable and that the video delivers what its title promises.

5. Upload, describe, and publish

  1. In YouTube, open the Create flow. Choose the standard video upload for a longer video, or use the Shorts creation or upload option for a Short.
  2. Select the finished video and complete the upload prompts.
  3. Write a title and description that accurately tell viewers what the video covers. Choose a thumbnail that represents the actual video.
  4. Review the details and publishing options shown in YouTube Studio, then publish when you are ready.

Accurate titles, descriptions, and thumbnails help set the right expectation; they are not a substitute for a video that gives viewers a reason to watch. YouTube’s creator guidance advises creators to make videos viewers want to watch and represent them accurately.

6. Learn from each upload without chasing a magic schedule

Use YouTube Analytics to understand how existing uploads perform and to inform later ideas. Look for what viewers choose to watch or skip and whether they continue with the video; treat those observations as clues for the next experiment, not a promise of future results. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal posting cadence. Choose a schedule you can sustain, or publish as you can, and adjust based on what you learn.

For Shorts, YouTube says views began counting starts and replays without a minimum watch time on March 31, 2025. “Engaged views” remains available in Analytics to compare viewers who chose to continue watching, and YouTube states that YPP eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing are based on engaged Shorts views. These are current details from YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026.

7. Keep content original and understand monetization rules

Make videos for their value to viewers, not solely to attract views. YouTube’s monetization policies say content should be original and authentic, not mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative. Borrowed material must be changed significantly to make it your own. Similar recurring formats are not automatically disallowed: YouTube says a channel may use a consistent format when each video’s substance is materially varied and delivers creative, educational, or other value.

On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that its “repetitious content” policy is now called “inauthentic content” to make clear that repetitive or mass-produced material is included. YouTube says the clarification did not change the reused-content policy. Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around reused footage, templates, or repeated formats.

When can you apply for ad-revenue sharing?

YouTube’s Partner Program overview, accessed October 3, 2026, lists either of these full ad-revenue eligibility routes:

  • 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months; or
  • 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.

Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold. YouTube also lists policy compliance, availability in your country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an active AdSense for YouTube account among the requirements. Eligible channels apply in YouTube Studio and are reviewed; hitting a threshold does not guarantee acceptance or earnings. Check the current YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility because requirements may change.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your plan is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
