You can turn a Twitch moment into a YouTube Short by creating a clip in Twitch, making sure it has a portrait layout, then sharing it directly to YouTube Shorts or downloading and uploading it yourself. Twitch clips can be up to 60 seconds; YouTube’s Shorts limit is a separate rule, allowing qualifying square or vertical videos up to three minutes.

Choose the right route

Route Use it when What to know
Twitch direct share The clip is ready and Twitch offers YouTube Shorts in its sharing controls. Twitch can prefill recommended title and description text. Availability depends on the clip, account, channel settings, and whether you own the clip or its creator permits sharing. Twitch Help
Download, then upload You want to review the exported portrait file and set the upload details yourself. Create and save a portrait version first; if the portrait download is absent, Twitch says that version may not have rendered yet. Twitch Help
YouTube Studio Clips and Shorts The stream segment is already in an eligible YouTube video. This makes a Short from the existing YouTube video; it is not an import of a downloaded Twitch clip. YouTube Help

Create and frame the clip in Twitch

  1. Open the live stream or past broadcast, then open Twitch’s Clip Creator.
  2. Choose the moment to capture, up to 60 seconds, and give the clip a title.
  3. Select portrait (9:16) in the editor. Twitch also supports landscape (16:9). Review the suggested framing; it may help keep the camera and gameplay visible, but it is only a suggestion.
  4. Choose a portrait layout—stacked or full—and adjust the crop or layout so the important action remains visible. Preview it; change or dismiss the suggestion if it cuts off key content.
  5. Apply and save the portrait edit, then publish the clip. If Twitch needs time to render the portrait version, wait before looking for its download.

Twitch’s Clip Creator limit is not extended by YouTube’s longer Shorts allowance. A Twitch-created clip starts with Twitch’s maximum of 60 seconds.

Share directly from Twitch

  1. Open the Clips Manager and select the clip.
  2. Use Twitch’s sharing controls and choose YouTube Shorts if that option is shown.
  3. Review the pre-populated title and description, replace them if needed, and confirm the share.

If YouTube Shorts is not offered, use the download-and-upload route. Sharing another creator’s clip may depend on that streamer’s sharing settings; channel owners can also have options viewers do not see. Twitch documents direct posting to YouTube, but that does not guarantee the control will appear for every clip or account.

Download and upload through YouTube

Get the portrait file from Twitch

  1. In Clips Manager, open the clip’s download options and select the portrait version.
  2. If the portrait download is missing, return to the clip editor, create or adjust the portrait layout, apply and save it, then allow the render to finish before checking again.

Upload on a computer

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Upload videos.
  2. Select the square or vertical clip file. YouTube classifies qualifying square or vertical videos up to three minutes as Shorts.
  3. Complete the video details, including title, privacy, and audience settings, then publish when ready. YouTube Shorts upload tips

Upload in the YouTube mobile app

  1. Start an upload in the YouTube app and select a square or vertical video.
  2. Use the editor to trim if needed; YouTube’s mobile guidance supports trimming videos up to three minutes.
  3. Enter the title, privacy, and audience details, then publish.

A clip downloaded from Twitch is a file upload. YouTube Studio’s separate Clips and Shorts tool is for making a Short from a source video already on YouTube.

Make a Short from a stream already on YouTube

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the eligible source video and choose Clips and Shorts.
  2. Select a transcript segment or set timestamps; if an AI suggestion is available, you can review it instead.
  3. Preview the segment and create a draft, then complete the upload details before publishing.

In eligible circumstances, YouTube automatically links the source video as a related video. This workflow avoids exporting a Twitch clip, but only applies when the broadcast is already available as a YouTube video. YouTube Help

Check rights before publishing

Make sure you have the rights to the clip’s video and audio. A Twitch clip being downloadable does not clear every element for use on YouTube. Pay particular attention to music in the game, background tracks, and other people’s content.

  • Twitch prohibits sharing copyrighted material you do not own or have permission to share, including another artist’s music.
  • YouTube says externally created Shorts containing copyright-protected material need approval for use. They may receive a Content ID claim; a valid takedown can remove the Short and result in a copyright strike.

Review the rights for both audio and visuals before you publish, even if the clip was created using Twitch’s tools. Twitch clip guidance · YouTube Shorts guidance

Troubleshoot common snags

  • You cannot find YouTube Shorts in Twitch sharing: The option depends on account, channel, and clip settings. Try downloading the clip and uploading it through YouTube instead.
  • The portrait download is missing: Create and save the portrait layout in Clip Creator, then wait for the version to render.
  • The crop hides gameplay or the camera: Reopen portrait editing, adjust the crop or switch between stacked and full layouts, then preview and save again. Automatic framing is not guaranteed to choose the right composition.
  • You are trying to make a Twitch clip longer than 60 seconds: Twitch’s Clip Creator limit is 60 seconds. YouTube’s three-minute Shorts limit does not change it; use an independently edited source if you need a longer segment.
  • A Short receives a copyright claim or takedown: Check whether the video or audio includes material you are not authorized to use. Resolve rights before re-uploading; exporting from Twitch does not establish permission.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded videos live 24/7 on YouTube; it does not create or publish Shorts. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer at home, accepts your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
